The effect of aging pre-treatment on the compressive deformation of a commercial WE54 alloy is studied. Age hardening treatments were performed at 170 °C, 250 °C and 300 °C. Compression testing was then carried out for the peak aged samples at temperatures between ambient and 450 °C. Twinning dominated the deformation at lower temperatures for all initial microstructures. This behaviour was replaced by slip dominated flow when the temperature was raised. The temperature of the transition from twinning to slip dominated flow was only mildly sensitive to the pre-treatment. It is also evident that dynamic recrystallization is retarded in this alloy.

Weight reduction increased the amount of deposited polypyrrole (PPy) on the polyester (PET) fiber surface, leading to a considerable decrease in electrical resistance and improved heat generation capacity for the PPy coated PET fabrics. Application of dc voltages to an insulated roll of PPy-coated fabric increased the temperature to about 90 °C. This showed the suitability of these fabrics for heating applications. The optimum PPy deposition of about 2.8% was obtained in samples weight reduced by aqueous sodium hydroxide treatment. AFM images revealed a smooth surface morphology of the untreated fiber whereas the treated fiber had a high surface roughness.

Agro-industries are a life-line for sustainable future of human kind. However, the wastewater generated by agro-industries poses direct threat to the same sustainable future by polluting the freshwater sources when discharged into those freshwater sources. Thus, we need both advanced treatment technologies to treat those wastewater streams generated and better reuse practices for the treated effluents. Reverse osmosis (RO) is one of the advanced treatments to treat dissolved solids that are present in agricultural wastewater streams. But, RO is very sensitive to suspended solids (SS) present in the wastewater streams. Those SS can foul the RO membrane and make it ineffective in producing treated effluent at desired rates. Therefore, suitable pre-treatment scheme is necessary to treat the agro-wastewater streams before passing through RO. This study focuses on the qualitative and quantitative ranking of the available conventional and modern pre-treatment technologies as pre-treatment for RO. This study considers wastewater that has been treated through a secondary treatment system for example activated sludge process as the target water that needs pre-treatment. Based on qualitative ranking of conventional pre-treatment options, the Lime clarification/Granular Media filtration (GMF) option is ranked as the best; whereas finescreens/ micro-screens option ranked as the least preferred option based on the scores they attained in treating the water quality parameters that are considered essential. Based on the quantitative ranking, the low pressure membrane technology such as ultra-filtration (UF) stood first and microfiltration (MF) stood last.

Forward Osmosis (FO) can be applied to recover water from the pre-treatment sludge of seawater reverse osmosis process. This study investigated the effect of the concentration of two draw solutions (MgCl2 and NaCl) in the reduction of Fe(OH)3 sludge volume and the effect of cross flow velocity on flux through FO membrane. Higher the concentration of NaCl and MgCl2 higher the water flux observed. However, the percentage increase was not significant due to the occurrence of internal concentration polarisation. MgCl2 draws marginally increased water flux than NaCl, when the conditions of feed and draw solutions were similar. Increase in cross flow velocity (from 0.25 to 1.0 m/s) marginally changed the flux with both draw solutions as higher cross flow velocities were unproductive to beat the external CP effect along the membrane surface. However, at 1 m/s, highest fluxes were obtained for both draw solutions.

This study focuses on volume reduction of pre-treatment sludge as well as on dilution of reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate through emerging forward osmosis (FO) technology where RO concentrate draws water from the pre-treatment sludge (feed solution) in order to reduce pre-treatment sludge volume and increase the RO water recovery. Experiments were carried out using two different types of sludge i.e. (1) synthetic pre-treatment sludge (Lab sludge) which has lower salinity and (2) actual sludge from Perth Seawater Desalination Plant, Australia (Perth Seawater Desalination Plant (PSDP) sludge) which has higher salinity. Effect of membrane orientation (FO and pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) modes) and temperature of pre-treatment sludge on permeate water flux was investigated. There was a significant increase in water flux from 3.2 to 10.2 LMH (i.e. ~3 times higher) when temperature increased from 20 to 40°C for Lab sludge in PRO mode. However, there is no significant effect of temperature on water flux in FO mode for Lab sludge. On the contrary for PSPD sludge, there was no effect on water flux with increase in temperature at PRO mode. Dissolved ions in the porous side increased the severity of concentrative internal concentration polarization; hence, it could reduce the flux. There was no significant change in water flux when temperature increased from 20 to 40°C for PSDP sludge in FO mode. However, higher amount of water has permeated from Lab sludge compared to PSDP sludge in FO mode. © 2014 © 2014 Balaban Desalination Publications. All rights reserved.

In this study, the effects of helium or a helium/oxygen mixture atmospheric pressure plasma treatment on the adsorption of chitosan onto the cotton fabric were investigated. Fabrics were treated with plasma prior to a chitosan finishing process, whereby fabrics were surface coated using a pad/dry/cure method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface energy analyser and contact angle measurements were used to investigate the changes on the cotton surface. Furthermore, antimicrobial activity of the cotton fabric was evaluated. The results showed that plasma pre-treatment enhanced the chitosan adsorption to the cotton surface through physical bonding and there was weak evidence of chemical bonding interactions. A combination of plasma and chitosan treatment did not show any significant differences on the antimicrobial properties compared to chitosan only treated fabric. Plasma treatment changed the fibres physically and enhanced the surface energy and thickness of chitosan distributed on the fibres.

Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers have exceptionally higher specific strength and stiffness compared with other high-performance fibers. However, the interfacial adhesion and compressive performance of UHMWPE fiber-reinforced polymer composites (FPCs) are extremely low. The challenges are to achieve load transfer at the interface between the fiber and matrix at a molecular level. Here, we show that plasma pre-treatment of UHMWPE fibers followed by coating with polypyrrole (PPy) results in an 848% improvement in the interfacial adhesion and 54% enhancement in compressive performance. This method takes advantage of a toughening mechanism observed in spider silk and collagen, which the hydrogen bond power the load transfer. The results showed that these improvements of interfacial adhesion and compressive strength were attributed to hydrogen-bonding interactions between the plasma pre-treated UHMWPE and PPy, which improves the fiber-matrix-fiber load transfer process. In addition, the hydrogen-bonded PPy coatings also endowed durability electrical conductivity properties of the UHMWPE fiber.

In this study, the physico-chemical effects occasioned by the cold plasma discharge (CPD) on the photo-decolorization of Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) by 3D fabrics (spacer fabrics) loaded with ZnO:TiO2 nano-photocatalysts (nphs) were optimized via response surface methodology (RSM). CPD was employed to improve the surface characteristics of the spacer fabrics for nphs loading. Surface morphology and color variation were studied utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and CIE-Lab system, respectively. The effect of CPD on the wetting ability of the spacer fabrics was examined using dynamic adsorption measurement (DAM). Also, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was utilized to investigate the durability of the nphs on the spacer fabrics. All the experiments were implemented in a Box-Behnken design (BBD) with three independent variables (CPD treatment time, dye concentration and irradiation time) in order to optimize the decolorization of RO16. The anticipated values of the decolorization efficiency were found to be in excellent agreement with the experimental values (R2 = 0.9996, Adjusted R2 = 0.9992). The kinetic analysis demonstrated that the photocatalytic decolorization followed the Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model. In conclusion, this heterogeneous photocatalytic process is capable of decolorizing and mineralizing azoic reactive dye in textile wastewater. Moreover, the results confirmed that RSM based on the BBD was a suitable method to optimize the operating conditions of RO16 degradation.

Gambling help services typically evaluate treatment outcomes using self-reported responses and measurements. However, gamblers’ conceptualisations and prioritisations with respect to these measurements may shift over time. Thus, changes in the self-reported responses may not always reflect true change in the individuals. This study investigated for response shift in self-report measures of psychological distress and impairment in 293 help-seeking problem gamblers. We used confirmatory factor analysis to model data structures from pre-treatment to post-treatment. The findings indicated that a response shift had occurred. Two items became less important and one item became more important in measuring psychological distress. Measurement invariance was achieved for the complete set of items for impairment. These findings provide a more in-depth understanding of the nature of self-report outcomes in otherwise routinely collected data.

A duplex surface treatment has been developed involving the pre-treatment of hardened and tempered AISI H13 chromium hot-work tool steel by a ferritic nitrocarburising process, and a subsequent treatment of the nitrocarburised surface by a low-temperature chromium thermo-reactive deposition process.  The process formed a thin and hard chromium carbonitride surface layer above a hardened diffusion zone, and the low processing temperature allowed the properties of the core material to be retained. It is expected this surface treatment will find application in the treatment  of tooling used for aluminium forming operations.
