In this article, the author interrogates students’ stories about the spaces and places in a tertiary Outdoor and Environmental Education course that support and shape their environmental ethics. Drawing on a longitudinal qualitative study, she explore the ways in which particular sites of learning (outdoor, practical learning) are privileged and how particular stories of outdoor spaces get reproduced. The author employs the work of poststructuralist geography scholar Doreen Massey in her analysis to highlight the intersections between space, relations of power and identity. This analysis also underscores the simultaneity of multiple and conflicting stories around Outdoor Education’s outdoor (practical) and indoor (theoretical) learning spaces. The article concludes by drawing on Elizabeth Ellsworth’s work on anomalous places of learning to explore some of the spaces in-between the indoor/outdoor binary as a way of interrupting and re-imagining places and spaces of learning in Outdoor Education.

Libraries worldwide are transforming their spaces to better align with the changing needs of their communities. The aim of this paper is to outline the process and outcome of an evaluation study of transformed academic library spaces at the Melbourne Burwood Campus using TEALS. In light of changing higher education practices and students learning preferences, Deakin University has been questioning the balance of informal learning spaces and more formal teaching and academic spaces across its campuses. Commissioned by Deakin University Library, TEALS (Tool for the Evaluation of Academic Library Spaces) was developed to evaluate academic library spaces. The Melbourne Burwood Campus library has undergone several phases of refurbishment to create a library environment that is centred around students’ needs and that supports their individual and group learning experiences. In addition, areas of the library yet to be improved will undergo a major redevelopment over the next year. Given this, carrying out an evaluation of the current spaces is timely to ensure that a better understanding of the impact of changes is achieved. The evaluation process involved: a review of architectural plans and space briefing documents; an observational study of spaces; focus groups with students and library staff; and an online survey of Students’ Library Experience. Use of the TEALS space evaluation tool along with an analysis of data collected during the evaluation process have provided significant insights into various dimensions of the quality of new library spaces. The areas of weakness and strength identified in the study will inform the next phase of Deakin University Library space redevelopment.

This paper identifies the design qualities of library spaces that matter the most foruniversity students. Drawing upon the data from an online survey made available to students from the University of Queensland, Australia, a number of design-related considerations are examined including: acoustics, furniture, interior architecture, lighting, and thermal comfort. 1505 students completed the survey, which aimed to assess how effective and responsive library spaces are in meeting students’ needs and supporting their learning experiences. The survey included ‘Likert scale questions’ requiring students to rate their levels of satisfaction with different aspects of library spaces and ‘open-ended questions’ asking students to elucidate their ratings. Findings revealed that the qualities of physical spaces were ranked as the third mostsignificant category of reasons accounting for students’ preference for certain library buildings over others, and for their frequency of visit (behind “location” of the library building and then “access to books and course-related materials or resources”). Design-related themes which emerged from qualitative analysis highlighted students’ awareness of the impacts that the design of spaces and furniture can have on their learning experiences. The study concludes with recommendations informed by students’ expectations, needs and preferences in relation to the qualities and features of library spaces.

Introduction: The paper reports on an evaluation study of spaces in the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSHL), Biological Sciences (BSL) and Walter Harrison Law (WHLL) Libraries of the University of Queensland (UQ). The study was part of an evaluation of the quality and patterns of use of spaces in UQ libraries, which aimed to propose recommendations for future improvements and decision-making. This paper presents a study of areas of weakness in existing SSHL spaces, and impacts of the refurbishment of spaces at BSL and WHLL on students’ experiences. The findings evidence a link between students’ learning experiences and the quality of library spaces.Methods: An online survey, “Students’ Experiences and Perceptions of Library Physical Spaces”, was designed to collect data from students. The survey questions addressed seven topics: (1) overall satisfaction with spaces in the UQ Libraries; (2) welcoming nature of the library entry; (3) lighting; (4) acoustics; (5) furniture; (6) wayfinding; and (7) preferences for different space types in the library.Results: 1505 students completed the surveys, with 1098 responses recorded to open-ended questions on why students visited the libraries and the physical characteristics of the spaces that influenced their experiences. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data elucidated key design challenges and considerations. In particular, the data suggested that the provision of individual quiet study spaces remains an important role of academic libraries, with Studying Alone identified as the most important reason for student visits.Conclusions: The findings highlight the importance of individual study spaces and propose a number of recommendations in relation to physical space design and management.Relevance: Academic libraries face the challenge to keep pace with change in relation to students’ demographics, pedagogy and technology. In doing so, it is important to have an understanding of the evolving patterns of students’ learning behaviours, space uses and preferences through ongoing evaluation of library spaces.

The highly imagined and contested space of higher education is invested with an affectively loaded ‘knowledge economy optimism’. Drawing on recent work in affect and critical geography, this paper considers the e/affects of the promises of the knowledge economy on its knowledge workers. We extend previous analyses of the discursive constitution of academic subjectivity through the figuration of ‘emotional knots’ as we explore three stories of the constitution of academic subjectivities in institutional spaces. These stories were composed in a collective biography workshop, where participants constructed accounts of the physical, social, material and imaginative dimensions of subjectivities in the ‘academic-city’ of higher education spaces. Identifying moments of ‘perturbation’ in these stories, this paper considers the micro-contexts of ‘becoming academic’: how bodies, affects and relations become knotted in precise times and places. The figuration of ‘knots’ provides an analytical strategy for unravelling how subjects affectively invest in the promises of spaces saturated with knowledge economy discourses, and moments of impasse where these promises ring hollow. We examine the affective bargains made in order to flourish in the corporate university and identify spaces of possibility where optimistic projections of alternative futures might be formed. These stories and their analysis complicate the metanarrative of ‘knowledge economy optimism’ that is currently driving higher education reform in Australia.

The circumplex model of affect proposes that states of affect can be categorised according to the two dimensions of valence and arousal. According to this model, satisfaction and dissatisfaction are located on the pleasant and unpleasant ends of the valence axis as bipolar opposites. This study investigated the relationship between these two adjectives when assessed with unipolar or bipolar response formats. This suggests that a reciprocal relationship exists between life satisfaction and dissatisfaction when a unipolar response format is employed, but not when a bipolar response format was used. These results are discussed in relation to current affect theory and subject wellbeing research.

The direction and speed of motion of a one-dimensional (1-D) stimulus, such as a grating, presented within a circular aperture is ambiguous. This ambiguity, referred to as the Aperture Problem (Fennema & Thompson, 1979) results from (i) the inability to detect motion parallel to grating orientation, and (ii) the occlusion of border information, such as the ‘endsof the grating, by the surface forming the aperture, Adelson and Movshon's (1982) intcrsection-of-constraints (IOC) model of motion perception describes a two-stage method of disambiguating the motion of 1-D moving stimuli (e.g., gratings) to produce unambiguous motion of two-dimensional (2-D) objects (e.g., plaid patterns) made up of several 1-D components. Specifically, in the IOC model ambiguous 1-D motions extracted by Stage 1 component-selective mechanisms are integrated by Stage 2 pattern-selective mechanisms to produce unambiguous 2-D motion signals. ‘Integration’ in the context of the IOC model involves determining the single motion vector (i.e., combination of direction and speed) which is consistent with the I-D components of a 2-D object. Since the IOC model assumes that 2-D objects undergo pure translation (i.e., without distortion, rotation, etc.), the motion vector consistent with all 1-D components describes the motion of the 2-D object itself. Adelson and Movshon (1982) propose that neural implementation of the computation underlying the IOC model is reflected in the perception of coherent 2-D plaid motion reported when two separately-moving ‘component’ gratings are superimposed. Using these plaid patterns the present thesis assesses the IOC model in terms of its ability to account for the perception of 2-D motion in a variety of circumstances. In the first series of experiments it is argued that the unambiguous motion perceived for a single grating presented within a rectangular aperture (i.e., the Barberpole illusion; Wallach, 1976) reflects application of the IOC computation to the moving 1-D grating and the stationary boundary of the aperture. While contrary to the assumption which underlies the IOC model (viz., that integration occurs between moving 1-D stimuli), evidence consistent with the involvement of the IOC computation in mediating the Barberpole illusion (in which there is only one moving stimulus) is obtained by measuring plaid coherence as a function of aperture shape. It is found that rectangular apertures which bias perceived component motions in directions consistent with plaid direction facilitate plaid coherence, while rectangular apertures which bias perceived component motions in directions inconsistent with plaid direction disrupt plaid coherence. In the second series of experiments, perceived directions of motion of type I symmetrical, type I asymmetrical, and type II plaids are measured with the aim of investigating the deviations in plaid directions reported by Ferrera and Wilson (1990) and Yo and Wilson (1992). Perceived directions of both asymmetrical and type II plaids are shown to deviate away from lOC-predicted directions and towards mean component direction. Furthermore, the magnitude of these deviations is being proportional to the difference between lOC-predicted plaid direction and mean component direction. On the basis of these directional deviations, modification to the IOC model is proposed. In the modified IOC model it is argued that plaid perception involves (i) the activity of Stage 2 pattern-selective mechanisms (and the Stage 1 component-selective mechanisms which input into these pattern-selective mechanisms) involved in implementing the IOC computation, and (ii) component-selective mechanisms which influence plaid perception directly, and ‘extraneously’ to the IOC computation. In the third series of experiments the validity of this modified IOC model, as well as the validity of alternative one-stage models of plaid perception are assessed in relation to perceived directions of plaid-induced MAEs as a function of both plaid direction and mean component direction. It is found that plaid-induced MAEs are shifted away from directions opposite to lOC-predicted plaid direction towards the direction opposite to mean component direction. This pattern of results is taken to be consistent with the modified IOC model which predicts the activity, and adaptation both of mechanisms signalling plaid direction (via implementation of the IOC computation), and ‘extraneous-type’ component-selective mechanisms signalling component directions. Alternative one-stage models which predict the adaptation of only mechanisms signalling plaid direction (the feature-tracking model), or the adaptation only of mechanisms signalling component directions (the distribution-of-activity model), cannot account for the directions of plaid-induced MAEs reported. The ability of the modified IOC model to account for the perceived directions of (i) gratings in rectangular apertures, (ii) various types of plaid in circular apertures, and (iii) directions of plaid-induced MAEs, is interpreted as supporting the proposition that human motion perception is based on a parallel and distributed process involving Stage 2 pattern-selective mechanisms (and the Stage 1 component-selective mechanisms which input into these mechanisms) taken to implement the IOC computation, and component-selective mechanisms taken to provide an 'extraneous' direct contribution to motion perception.

Objective: To examine the influence of the nurse, the type of patient presentation and the level of hospital service on consistency of triage using the Australasian Triage Scale.

Methods:
A secondary analysis of survey data was conducted. The main study was undertaken to measure the reliability of 237 scenarios for inclusion in a national training programme. Nurses were recruited from a quota sample of Australian ED according to peer group. Analysis was performed to determine concordance: the percentage of responses in the modal triage category. Analysis of variance (anova) and Pearson correlations were used to investigate associations between the explanatory variables and concordance.

Results:
A total of 42/50 (84%) participants returned questionnaires, providing 9946 scenario responses for analysis. Significant differences in concordance were observed by variables describing the type of patient presentation and level of urgency. Mean scores for the comparison group (adult pain; 70.7%) were higher than the groups involving a mental health or pregnancy presentations (61.4%; P≤ 0.001; 65.0%; P= 0.02). Modal responses at the extreme ends of the scale were higher than in the middle categories (P≤ 0.001). There was a significant main effect on concordance by type of service according to peer group (P= 0.03). Of the nine variables that described nurse characteristics, age was the only factor to influence the outcome (P= 0.05).

Conclusion: We identified significant problems with the consistency of triage for mental health and pregnancy presentations. Further research is needed to improve the guidelines on the implementation of the Australasian Triage Scale for these populations.

Michael Polanyi and Karl Popper offer contrasting accounts of social tradition. Popper is steeped in the heritage of the Enlightenment, while Polanyi interweaves religious and diverse secular strands of thought. Explaining the liberal tradition, Polanyi features tacit knowledge of rules, standards, applications and interpretations being transmitted by “craftsmen” to “apprentices.” Each generation adopts the liberal tradition on “faith,” commits to creatively developing its art of knowledge-in-practice, and is drawn to the spiritual reality of ideal ends. Of particular interest to Popper is the rationality of social traditions. Likened by him to scientific theories, Popper’s traditions are criticizable and improvable, assisting agents to understand, and act in, the world as stable and predictable. Polanyi’s is the more informative rendering of tradition. Polanyi delves deeply into important areas where Popper only scratches their surface: the tacit dimension, transmission by way of apprenticeship, the meaning of tradition for those who participate in it, and the extent of its authority over them.

What makes some people feel that they fit in at work whilst others feel they misfit? This brief paper outlines a study which is currently in progress to explore individuals’ perceptions of fit and misfit at work. In the person-organisation and person-environment fit literature, fit and misfit tend to be shown as two ends of a spectrum, with an underlying assumption being that the two states are polar opposites. Whilst this seems intuitively logical, there has been no empirical test of this core assumption in the literature. This paper outlines a qualitative study, using causal mapping, to identify the factors affecting employees’ fit and misfit perceptions at work. It is anticipated that by the time of the BAM conference, the data analysis will be complete and full findings will be available.

This study investigated the nature of age discrimination against older job applicants. One hundred fifty-six participants (102 students; 54 organization based) evaluated a hypothetical job applicant's (aged 33–66 years) work-related competences and likelihood of being hired. Applicant age affected hiring decisions for both samples where there was a preference for hiring applicants aged 42–48 years. Applicants at both the older and younger ends of the continuum were less likely to be hired, with the oldest applicants (over 54 years) being the least likely to be hired. Although the applicants' age negatively affected evaluations of their trainability and sociability, the effect of applicant age on hiring evaluations was not mediated by these work-related competencies, suggesting that age discrimination occurs via direct bias against older workers.

A special Micro-Nano fiberous composite structure composed of nano- and micro-scale fiber of Polycaprolactone (PCL) and Gelatin produced by using single nozzle electrospinning instrument. By controlling the solution (polymer concentration and polymer composition percent) and processing parameters of electrospinning (feed rate and electrostatic field), different portion of nano and micro fibers in the structure is achieved. This method can result a one-stage method of fabrication of Micro-Nano fiberous composite structure instead of previously used twostage process or using additional facility to produce structure near-similar to this composite structure. The resulting materials finely mingle nano- and micro fibers together, rather than simply juxtaposing them, as is commonly found in the literature. The results obtained from SEM, Flow Porosimetry, and DMA led the authors to confirm that the structure has very versatile and improved properties for many applications like cell culture scaffolds. These favourable mechanical and structural properties can provide easier opening of spaces for cell penetration to deeper levels of the scaffold and withstand to tensions during to clinical handling.

In this paper, I analyse the post-colonial and post-modern experiences in the light of questions and issues concerning the spatial identities or locations that the diasporans carry. By politics of spatial location, I mean a migrant's positions within power hierarchies created through geographic, historical, political, economic and other socially stratifying factors in the new homeland. This paper is mainly concerned with the theoretical ways in which a shift is accelerated in Australia's literary landscape by the South Asian diasporic writers who produce and cover the dynamics of politics of location in different contexts. It also focuses on South Asian diaspora's widely agreed ‘ability to recreate their cultures in diverse locations’. I conclude that these stories are not just of spaces but also of a promising future for the South Asian diaspora in Australia.
