Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP) are the most reliable and industrially used control devices to capture fine particles for reducing exhaust emission. Its efficiency is 99% or more. However, capturing submicron particles which are hazardous is still a problem as it involves complex flow phenomena and ESP design limitations. In this study, the effect of baffles on flow distribution inside the ESP is investigated computationally. Baffles are expected to increase the residence time of flue gas which helps to collect more particles into the collector plates, and hence increase the collection efficiency of an ESP. Besides, the placement of a baffle is likely to cause swirling of flue gas and hence sub-micron particles move towards the collector plate due to eccentric and electrostatic force. Therefore, the effects of position, shape and thickness of the baffles on collection efficiency which are also important for ESP design are reported in this study. The fluid flow distribution has been modelled using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software Fluent and the result and outcome are presented and discussed. The result shows that baffles have significant influence on fluid flow pattern and the efficiency of ESP.

Fly ash is generated from combustion of brown coal in power stations. The majority of fly ash is removed by electrostatic precipitators (ESP) and finally disposed into the landfill as prescribed wastes. A method was studied to add clay materials to the brown coal fly ash in order to form the so-called geopolymer network, which is effective at stopping the metal contents from leaching, and have minimum impact to the environment. The experiments were conducted parallel on leached fly ash and dry precipitator fly ash. The ratios of fly ash and added clay materials were varied to determine the effects of different compositions on leaching rates. Both X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy images showed that as the percentage of fly ash was increased, the formation of geopolymer is reduced. Eighteen metals and heavy metals were targeted during the leaching tests and the leachate samples were analysed using ICP-AES and ICP-MS. It was found that the reduction of metal leaching was achieved by adding up to 60% of fly ash to form the geopolymer like structure. Significant reductions were observed for calcium, strontium and barium. Leached fly ash achieved better stabilisation than dry precipitator fly ash for major elements. It's hard to quantify its effects on trace metals leaching due to their ultra low concentration in the fly ash. The samples spiked with trace metals of lead, zinc, mercury and barium showed remarkable reduction in leaching.

Recycled water has facilitated expansion of viticulture in Great Western, Victoria. The recycled water is of medium salinity, and has high concentrations of nutrients and sodium. Irrigation has resulted in increased topsoil EC, pH, and ESP. Laboratory studies identified spatially heterogeneous soils which present a risk of groundwater and offsite contamination.

This paper investigates three areas of priority for rural teacher education: work integrated learning (WIL); attraction and retention of teachers to rural areas; and the potential challenges and benefits of community based partnerships to address these areas of need. The data on which this paper is based focuses on a Victorian project around six case studies that explored the research and scholarship of teaching graduates to be work ready for the needs of rural and regional communities. The project also aimed to explore how preservice teacher education can develop and better support pre-service teachers (PSTs) through rural and regional community-based WIL experiences.
The project investigated what sort of support PSTs undertaking WIL experiences in rural and regional communities need in order to develop positive attitudes and understandings in relation to working in a rural/regional community. Consideration was also given to how support from the university, school,
supervising teacher and broader local community enhances or detracts from the PST’s experience of WIL in rural and regional areas. In order to explore these issues in this paper the authors will outline some recommendations with regards to ways in which teacher education programs may enhance the experiences of stakeholders involved in rural and regional WIL experiences, including PSTs, supervising teachers, university teacher educators and community members.
The project’s underlying conceptual framework of place, productivity and partnerships will be explained in terms of its overlapping dimensions of community, creativity and capital in order to reconceptualise preservice teacher education in local, rural and regional and global contexts as adaptive community-based work integrated learning within a knowledge economy.
The final discussion will make recommendations on how universities and other identified stakeholders can better facilitate WIL and enhance stakeholder engagement in rural and regional areas in order to equip PSTs
and classroom teachers to work creatively together in productive partnerships to meet the future demands of local rural and global contexts of change in a knowledge economy.

Introduction: This article explores how community engagement by paramedics in an expanded scope role contributes to both primary health care and to an overall improved emergency response capacity in rural communities. Understanding how expanded scope paramedics (ESP) can strengthen community healthcare collaborations is an important need in rural areas where low workforce numbers necessitate innovation.

Methods: Four examples of Australian rural ESP roles were studied in Tasmania, New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria to gather information on consistent elements that could inform a paramedic expanded scope model. Qualitative data were collected from semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders and organisational documents. Thematic analysis within and across cases found community engagement was a key element in the varied roles. This article relies heavily on data from the Victorian and Tasmanian case studies because community engagement was a particularly strong aspect of these cases.

Results: The ESP in the case studies increased interactions between ambulance services and rural communities with an overall benefit to health care through: increasing community response capacity; linking communities more closely to ambulance services; and increasing health promotion and illness prevention work at the community level. Leadership, management and communication skills are important for paramedics to successfully undertake expanded scope roles.

Conclusion: ESP in rural locations can improve health care beyond direct clinical skill by active community engagement that expands the capacity of other community members and strengthens links between services and communities. As health services look to gain maximum efficiency from the health workforce, understanding the intensification of effort that can be gained from practitioner and community coalitions provides important future directions.

Coasts composed of resistant lithologies such as granite are generally highly resistant to erosion. They tend to evolve over multiple sea level cycles with highstands acting to remove subaerially weathered material. This often results in a landscape dominated by plunging cliffs with shore platforms rarely occurring. The long-term evolution of these landforms means that throughout the Quaternary these coasts have been variably exposed to different sea level elevations which means erosion may have been concentrated at different elevations from today. Investigations of the submarine landscape of granitic coasts have however been hindered by an inability to accurately image the nearshore morphology. Only with the advent of multibeam sonar and aerial laser surveying can topographic data now be seamlessly collected from above and below sea level. This study tests the utility of these techniques and finds that very accurate measurements can be made of the nearshore thereby allowing researchers to study the submarine profile with the same accuracy as the subaerial profile. From a combination of terrestrial and marine LiDAR data with multibeam sonar data, it is found that the morphology of granite domes is virtually unaffected by erosion at sea level. It appears that evolution of these landscapes on the coast is a very slow process with modern sea level acting only to remove subaerially weathered debris. The size and orientation of the joints determines the erosional potential of the granite. Where joints are densely spaced (<2 m apart) or the bedrock is highly weathered can semi-horizontal surfaces form.

This article provides an update for 2015 on the burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD), with a particular focus on coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke, across the countries of Europe. Cardiovascular disease is still the most common cause of death within Europe, causing almost two times as many deaths as cancer across the continent. Although there is clear evidence, where data are available, that mortality from CHD and stroke has decreased substantially over the last 5-10 years, there are still large inequalities found between European countries, in both current rates of death and the rate at which these decreases have occurred. Similarly, rates of treatment, particularly surgical intervention, differ widely between those countries for which data are available, indicating a range of inequalities between them. This is also the first time in the series that we use the 2013 European Standard Population (ESP) to calculate age-standardized death rates (ASDRs). This new standard results in ASDRs around two times as large as the 1976 ESP for CVD conditions such as CHD but changes little the relative rankings of countries according to ASDR.
