On-site collision tests of full-scale concrete barriers are an important method to understand what happens to concrete barriers when vehicles collide with them. However, such tests require both time and money, so modeling and simulation of collisions by computer have been developed as an alternative in this research. First, spring subgrade models were developed to formulate the ground boundary of concrete barriers based on previous experiments. Then, the finite element method models were developed for both heavy trucks and concrete barriers to simulate their dynamic collision performances. Comparison of the results generated from computer simulations and on-site experiments demonstrates that the developed models can be applied to simulate the collision of heavy trucks with concrete barriers, to replicate the movement of the truck at the collision, and to investigate the performance of the concrete barriers. The developed research methodology can be widely used to support the design of new concrete barriers and the safety analysis of existing ones.

Computer modeling and simulation provide a foundation upon which industrial processes and systems can be transformed and innovation dramatically accelerated. Computer modeling and simulation is also an indispensable tool of the information age, used extensively in design, analysis, operations, decision-making, optimization, and education and training. Manufacturing, production and design relies upon simulation to develop efficient production systems and factories that produce quality products. Simulation in industry has yet to meet its full potential. The development of models is very time consuming, particularly for geometries of complex engineering systems such as manufacturing plants, automobiles, aircraft and ships. Computer simulation allows scientists and engineers to understand and predict three-dimensional and time-dependent phenomena in science and engineering discipline. This talk will focus on challenges associated with modeling and simulation in the manufacturing sector and through a number of case studies highlight the benefits gained through the use of such technologies.

The deficiencies in the design of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) systems that are reported in numerous published works consistently identify the optics assembly as the main problem in the miniaturization of SPR sensors for integration into biosensor systems. This paper presents a novel design of a grating coupled optical waveguide surface plasmon (SP) excitation mechanism, investigated with the intention of addressing the problems associated with using the traditional prism input-output light coupling approach. Computational multiphysics modeling and simulation of the design is carried out. The results are presented and discussed.

An accurate estimation of pressure drop due to vehicles inside an urban tunnel plays a pivotal role in tunnel ventilation issue. The main aim of the present study is to utilize computational intelligence technique for predicting pressure drop due to cars in traffic congestion in urban tunnels. A supervised feed forward back propagation neural network is utilized to estimate this pressure drop. The performance of the proposed network structure is examined on the dataset achieved from Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulation. The input data includes 2 variables, tunnel velocity and tunnel length, which are to be imported to the corresponding algorithm in order to predict presure drop. 10-fold Cross validation technique is utilized for three data mining methods, namely: multi-layer perceptron algorithm, support vector machine regression, and linear regression. A comparison is to be made to show the most accurate results. Simulation results illustrate that the Multi-layer perceptron algorithm is able to accurately estimate the pressure drop.

Thrombotic stroke, which is caused by blood clot in the cerebral artery, is a major source of increased mortality and morbidity. Considering as efficient and fastest methods, mathematical approaches have gained significant importance for analyzing and understanding the biological events like thrombosis. This paper presents a computational model to analyze the effects of thrombosis using the theory of coupled fluid dynamics-structure interaction. The finite element method is used for the modeling of thrombosis (blood clot) of different stages in the middle cerebral artery with physiological compliance. The developed model is used to investigate the consequences that occur due to the various sizes of clots in the artery in the form of blood flow velocity, blood pressure, and artery wall stress. Such numerical assessment will facilitate better understanding of the biophysical process in case of thrombosis and thus would support medical practitioners to take faster curing steps.

With the increasing stock of aging structures, the strategy to model and analyse the retirement of deteriorated structures is becoming a challenging research field. As the converse of construction of new projects, the retirement of constructed facilities puts forward some new management and economics themes as well as environmental issues or adds some new contents even though the same issues are faced in construction. This research aims to model and analyse the maintenance and demolition activities of constructed facilities from economic and environmental perspectives. Both cost and carbon dioxide of maintenance and demolition activities are formulated based on those of construction activities and applied to an empirical study on deteriorated bridges. Further modelling and analysis is investigated to elaborate the demolition stage of a structure. The developed modelling and analysis methodology may enable the decision maker to determine the retirement strategy for a deteriorated structure.

This study used interviews and qualitative analyses to investigate the nature of the messages that preschool children receive from mothers and teachers about their bodies, general appearance, exercise and eating practices. Participants were 10 female teachers and 53 mothers. The behaviours of the 53 children (24 boys, 29 girls) were also observed to determine the nature of their eating and exercise behaviours. The results demonstrated that both mothers and teachers expressed concerns about their own bodies. Mothers also communicated messages to their daughters about losing weight and messages to their sons about increasing their muscles. Both girls and boys were concerned about their appearance, particularly their clothes and hair. Girls also demonstrated some concerns about losing weight, and boys with increasing muscles. Implications of these results are discussed in terms of designing education programs for mothers, teachers and children to prevent the development of body image concerns and disordered eating among children. Culture-based fish yield in non-perennial reservoirs of Sri Lanka was related to reservoir morphometry and stocking density. The reservoirs were stocked mainly with fingerlings of one Chinese and three Indian major carp species, common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., and the genetically improved farmed tilapia strain of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), at four pre-determined species combinations and a range of stocking densities [SD (fingerlings ha−1)]. Twenty-three reservoirs were harvested successfully at the end of the culture period of 2002–2003. Basic limnological and morphometric parameters, including shoreline development (DL) and shoreline area ratio (RLA), were estimated for each of the 23 reservoirs. Bray–Curtis similarity and non-metric multidimensional scaling using mean values of limnological data revealed that reservoirs could be ordinated into two major clusters, one with intact sample distribution due to similar trophic characteristics and the other with scattered sample distribution. Reservoirs in the cluster with similar trophic characteristics showed significant correlation (P < 0.05) between RLA and total fish yield (Y). A multiple regression equation, Y = −693 + 4810 RLA + 0.484 SD, was generated to estimate fish harvest in relation to SD.

Objectives To describe the proportion of women reporting time is a barrier to healthy eating and physical activity, the characteristics of these women and the perceived causes of time pressure, and to examine associations between perceptions of time as a barrier and consumption of fruit, vegetables and fast food, and physical activity.
Design A cross-sectional survey of food intake, physical activity and perceived causes of time pressure.
Setting A randomly selected community sample.
Subjects A sample of 1580 women self-reported their food intake and their perceptions of the causes of time pressure in relation to healthy eating. An additional 1521 women self-reported their leisure-time physical activity and their perceptions of the causes of time pressure in relation to physical activity.
Results Time pressure was reported as a barrier to healthy eating by 41 % of the women and as a barrier to physical activity by 73 %. Those who reported time pressure as a barrier to healthy eating were significantly less likely to meet fruit, vegetable and physical activity recommendations, and more likely to eat fast food more frequently.
Conclusions Women reporting time pressure as a barrier to healthy eating and physical activity are less likely to meet recommendations than are women who do not see time pressure as a barrier. Further research is required to understand the perception of time pressure issues among women and devise strategies to improve women’s food and physical activity behaviours.

The overall performance of a distributed system often depends on the effectiveness of its interconnection network. Thus, the study of the communication networks for distributed systems is very important, which is the focus of this paper. In particular, we address the problem of interconnection networks performance modeling for heterogeneous meta-computing systems. We consider the meta-computing system as a typical multi-cluster system. Since the heterogeneity is becoming common in such systems, we take into account network as well as cluster size heterogeneity to propose the model. To this end, we present an analytical network model and validate the model through comprehensive simulation. The results of the simulation demonstrated that the proposed model exhibits a good degree of accuracy for various system organizations and under different working conditions.
