Water sensitive design on our urban threshold is increasingly becoming topical. In Adelaide it is being driven by stormwater management strategies and economic efficiencies in a city that is beginning to embrace its Mediterranean environment, low water sustainability, and whether our showpiece public domains in Adelaide can afford large expanses of manicured lawns.

This paper reviews four projects in progress along the North Terrace in Adelaide. The first involves a major redesign of First Creek as it traverses Adelaide Botanic Garden to address stormwater management issues. The redesign includes strategies to control flash flooding, to cleanse stream water from pollutants, and to carefully incorporate a wetland system as an integral botanical and horticultural feature of a botanic garden. Further down North Terrace, the University of Adelaide is evaluating a scenario that will totally redesign Goodman Crescent, its picture-postcard promenade lawn. The scenario is to host an integrated water retention and water purification and cleansing system that will service independently of mains water an irrigation system and a waterfall. The proposal draws upon a similar strategy recently adopted by the South Australian Museum to capture and cleanse surface and roof water but place the installation and process on display as part of its overall biodiversity museum display that will unfold over the next five years under director Tim Flannery. The fourth example, in process at present, is to devise an integrated water system that may enable the Government House grounds to remove itself from dependence upon costly mains water to totally sustain its extensive gardens and lawns.

Importantly each project has similar threads: creative water maximization and purification use, and a desire to place these ‘installations’ on display as public statements of their commitment to water sustainability in Adelaide. But radically, here are four prominent cultural institutions readily willing to redefine the notion and traditional visual imagery of a ‘wetland’ on what is the main cultural boulevard of a capital city.

Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) gas emission in sewer networks is associated with several problems including the release of dangerous odour to the atmosphere and sewer pipe corrosion. The release of odour can endanger public health and corrode sewer pipe walls. Sewer corrosion has the potential to cost water utilities millions of dollars to maintain and rehabilitate the affected sewer pipes. Some chemical mitigation strategies to control hydrogen sulphide emission have been introduced. These include but are not limited to the injection of oxygen, magnesium and sodium hydroxide, calcium nitrate and iron salts. The optimisation of the dosing rate and location of each chemical mitigation strategy is required to achieve maximum hydrogen sulphide gas removal efficiency along with cost effectiveness. In this review paper, the five most popular chemical mitigation strategies that were previously mentioned have been investigated and discussed. The article is broken down into three main discussions. Firstly the sewer transformation processes and factors affecting the hydrogen sulphide generation and emission are highlighted. Secondly, comparisons and differences between each selected chemical mitigation strategy as well as its application covered. Finally, the review of the chemical efficiency and cost is conducted by comparing two case studies in controlling the formation of dissolved sulphide. It was found that the injection of oxygen is the cheapest mitigation strategy of hydrogen sulphide gas generation in sewers, but least effective.

In democracies such as Australia and New Zealand, education policy increasingly seeks to foster active citizens who are committed to social justice and change. Whilst many aspects of these initiatives are to be applauded for their commitment to empowering young people, in this paper we describe some of the ambiguities that attend young people’s experiences of civic engagement and active citizenship. In doing so, we draw on Isin’s (2008) reconceptualization of citizenship as something that is, above all, performed or enacted. Isin’s focus is upon ‘acts of citizenship’ which he argues are best understood by examining their grounds, effects and consequences. Drawing on illustrations of young people’s global and local citizenship actions in schools in Australia and New Zealand, we examine some of the contradictions and tensions that lie within the enactment of such ‘performed’ curricula. We conclude by reflecting on the opportunities that exist within school and community spaces for the active citizen to perform acts of citizenship.

We estimate momentum profits for a large portfolio of Islamic stocks, control for stock characteristics and the state-of-the-market, explore seasonal patterns, and examine the determinants of profits. We discover ample evidence that momentum strategies work for Islamic stocks, but are stock characteristic-dependent, that up and down phases of the market offer different profits, and that there is a January effect on profits. We also find that the market risk factors - namely, excess market returns, value, size, and betting-against-beta factors - and macroeconomic risk factors do explain profits. We conclude that the profitability of Islamic stocks is merely compensation for risks and is not due to mispricing.

Purpose – Firms compete using a variety of strategies. Typically they aim to provide something different, to be better, or simply cheaper. In the construction industry, the performance characteristics, quality and cost of the final delivered project will be the outcome of the interplay of capabilities of all the firms involved in the project. Consequently, in order to improve competitiveness, firms must pay attention to not only their own competitive advantage but to those of the firms, both up-stream and down-stream, on whom they depend in delivering their projects. For foreign constructors in China, those competitive considerations will be informed by circumstances different from home. How then do foreign constructors adapt themselves to the problem of sourcing competitively when located within a China-based supply chain? The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach
– In this study 60 foreign enterprises operating within the Chinese construction sector were investigated by using a comparative case study approach.

Findings
– Four generic procurement strategies were identified. First, firms adapt themselves in the search for optimal supply sources by replicating home-based suppliers, controlling local suppliers, or by remaining agile and non-aligned. Second, firms develop niche supply monopolies through market dominance, uniquely differentiated offerings, or by integration with down-stream providers. Third, firms find opportunities to bring in off-shore technology intensive procurements, where that technology is either protected, improved upon, or sold. Finally, firms also seek to transit to China as a procurement base in order to reduce local supply cost, service world-wide operations, or as part of a total strategy of China relocation.

Originality/value
– The identification of this rich range of procurement approaches will be of interest to internationalization strategists, as well as to industry practitioners looking to find appropriate business models for off-shore operations.
