This paper presents a conveyor-based methodology to model complex vehicle flows common to factory and distribution warehouse facilities. The AGV and human path modelling techniques available in many commercial discrete event simulation packages require extensive knowledge and time to implement even the simplest flow control rules for multiple vehicle interaction. Although discrete event simulation is accepted as an effective tool to model vehicle delivery movements, human paths and delivery schedules for modern assembly lines, the time to generate accurate models is a significant limitation of existing simulation-based optimisation methodologies. The flow control method has been successfully implemented using two commercial simulation packages. It provides a realistic visual representation, as well as accurate statistical results, and reduces the model development process cost.

The so-called scroll shoulder tool is widely used particularly for thick section friction stir welding (FSW). However, the correlation between its shoulder flow zone weld quality and material flow quantity remains unclear. This information is important for tool design. In the present study, a scroll shoulder tool was used to FSW 20mm thick 6061 aluminum (Al) plates at a range of welding parameters. The pick-up material (PUM) by the scroll was quantified, and the effect of welding parameters and PUM on the shoulder flow zone formation and weld quality was studied. It was found that there is a positive linear relationship between the PUM and weld quality. In order to obtain a defect-free FSW weld produced by the scroll shoulder tool, scroll groove needs to be fully filled by PUM.

Scroll shoulder tools are widely used and they do not need to be tilted during friction stir welding (FSW). However, the detailed material flow, which is important for proper scroll shoulder tool design and subsequently for forming the defect-free shoulder flow zone, has not been fully explained. In the present study, features of material flow in shoulder flow zone, during FSW of thick 6061 aluminium (Al) plates using a scroll shoulder tool were investigated. It was observed that there is a simple layer-to-layer banded structure which appears in the bottom portion of shoulder flow zone, but disappears in the top portion of this weld zone. When the scroll shoulder tool is plunged into the workpiece to a determined depth, the workpiece material is extruded by the tool pin, and pushed up into the scroll groove beneath the shoulder forming the pick-up material. During the forward movement of the tool, the central portion of pick-up material was driven downward by the root portion of pin and then it detaches from the tip portion of pin in a layer-to-layer manner to form the weld.

Wetland and floodplain ecosystems along many regulated rivers are highly stressed, primarily due to a lack of environmental flows of appropriate magnitude, frequency, duration, and timing to support ecological functions. In the absence of increased environmental flows, the ecological health of river ecosystems can be enhanced by the operation of existing and new flow-control infrastructure (weirs and regulators) to return more natural environmental flow regimes to specific areas. However, determining the optimal investment and operation strategies over time is a complex task due to several factors including the multiple environmental values attached to wetlands, spatial and temporal heterogeneity and dependencies, nonlinearity, and time-dependent decisions. This makes for a very large number of decision variables over a long planning horizon. The focus of this paper is the development of a nonlinear integer programming model that accommodates these complexities. The mathematical objective aims to return the natural flow regime of key components of river ecosystems in terms of flood timing, flood duration, and interflood period. We applied a 2-stage recursive heuristic using tabu search to solve the model and tested it on the entire South Australian River Murray floodplain. We conclude that modern meta-heuristics can be used to solve the very complex nonlinear problems with spatial and temporal dependencies typical of environmental flow allocation in regulated river ecosystems. The model has been used to inform the investment in, and operation of, flow-control infrastructure in the South Australian River Murray.

In this paper, an agent-based distributed control scheme is presented to control single-phase parallel inverters in solar photovoltaic (PV) systems connected to microgrids. A communication assisted multi-agent framework is developed within microgrids where agents perform their tasks in a distributed manner with an aim of stabilizing load voltage and current under normal and faulted conditions through the asymptotic tracking of the reference current signal. The distributed agent-based control scheme requires information from the neighboring agents through communication network to decide control actions. The proposed control scheme utilizes Ziegler-Nichols (Z-N) tuning approach to design proportional integral (PI) controllers for controlling inverters within the multi-agent system (MAS). A microgrid with parallel inverter-connected solar PV systems is considered for simulations under normal and faulted conditions where results show the excellency of the proposed agent-based scheme in comparison to the conventional scheme without MAS.

The paper presents a new fully distributed uplink power control method for CDMA systems. The power control algorithm calculates explicitly and assigns directly the desired mobile transmit powers achieving both maximum Carrier-to-Interference Ratio at the base station and minimum mobile energy consumption. Compared with the commonly known iterative power control algorithms, the direct assignment method is easier to implement and more power efficient.

Kanban Control Systems (KCS) have become a widely accepted form of inventory and production control. The creation of realistic Discrete Events Simulation (DES) models of KCS require specification of both information and material flow. There are several commercially available simulation packages that are able to model these systems although the use of an application specific modelling language provides means for rapid model development. A new Kanban specific simulation language as well as a high-speed execution engine is verified in this paper through the simulation of a single stage single part type production line. A single stage single part KCS is modelled with exhaustive enumeration of the decision variables of container sizes and number of Kanbans. Several performance measures were used; 95% Confidence Interval (CI) of container Flow Time (FT), mean line throughput as well as the Coefficient of Variance (CV) of FT and Cycle Time were used to determine the robustness of the control system.

This paper addresses the problem of performance modeling for large-scale heterogeneous distributed systems with emphases on multi-cluster computing systems. Since the overall performance of distributed systems is often depends on the effectiveness of its communication network, the study of the interconnection networks for these systems is very important. Performance modeling is required to avoid poorly chosen components and architectures as well as discovering a serious shortfall during system testing just prior to deployment time. However, the multiplicity of components and associated complexity make performance analysis of distributed computing systems a challenging task. To this end, we present an analytical performance model for the interconnection networks of heterogeneous multi-cluster systems. The analysis is based on a parametric family of fat-trees, the m-port n-tree, and a deterministic routing algorithm, which is proposed in this paper. The model is validated through comprehensive simulation, which demonstrated that the proposed model exhibits a good degree of accuracy for various system organizations and under different working conditions.

This paper addresses the robust stabilization and Hcontrol problem for a class of linear polytopic systems with continuously distributed delays. The control objective is to design a robust H controller that satisfies some exponential stability constraints on the closed-loop poles. Using improved parameter-dependent Lyapunov Krasovskii functionals, new delay-dependent conditions for the robust H control are established in terms of linear matrix inequalities.

This paper proposes a Q-learning based controller for a network of multi intersections. According to the increasing amount of traffic congestion in modern cities, using an efficient control system is demanding. The proposed controller designed to adjust the green time for traffic signals by the aim of reducing the vehicles’ travel delay time in a multi-intersection network. The designed system is a distributed traffic timing control model, applies individual controller for each intersection. Each controller adjusts its own intersection’s congestion while attempt to reduce the travel delay time in whole traffic network. The results of experiments indicate the satisfied efficiency of the developed distributed Q-learning controller.

Weirs are common structure to regulate discharge and flow control inwater conveyance channels and hydraulic structures. Labyrinth weirsconsidered one of economical and effective methods to increase the efficiency of weirs that crest length of weirs increase without a related increase in structure width. Therefore, flow discharge will be increased. Compared to use compound weir, there are some benefits including the simultaneous passage of floating materials such as wood, ice, etc. Also, sedimentations are pass through compound weir. The trapezoidal Labyrinth weir is one of the combined models. In present study 15 physical models that discussion effect changes sidewall angle of labyrinth weir on discharge coefficient of flow over and through the compound trapezoidal one cycle Labyrinth weir. Also, it is developed design curves with various shapes and configurations. The researchshowed here mainly objectives at determining the coefficient of discharge for flow-over trapezoidal labyrinth weir by performing tests at wide range of values of side wall angles (α) from 6° to 35° and compound linear weir to be compared.

In stamping operations, the sliding of the sheet metal over the drawbeads is of great importance. The geometry of the drawbead and the degree of penetration both influence material flow and alter the frictional effects between the work and the tool. The effect of drawbead penetration over drawbeads has been studied using the Drawbead Simulator (DBS) test. The contact phenomenon between the sheet and drawbeads was analysed by examining deformed samples with an image fitting technique. The results were compared with an FE simulation and with an approximate geometric analysis. The results give a useful relationship between the rates of change of the contact angle with increasing bead penetration.

A highly programmable electro-mechanical surface is developed using an effective array of individual pins arranged in a gridform. Each pin can be independently raised or lowered to create a wide range of contoured surfaces. It was found that as the number of elements increased. high levels of accuracy could still be achieved. however the required processing power increased logarithmically. This finding was attributed to the large amounts of data being passed. and subsequently led to a second focus; various methods of data management and flow control techniques within large-scale multi elemental systems. Results indicated a large potential for highly programmable surfaces within industry to provide a computer controlled surface for rapid prototyping. The research also revealed the potential for such a device to be used as a HID within Haptic applications.

beginning of serious problems for the business models of publishers. The ease with which content can be accessed, copied and distributed disrupts the control of those whose role has been to manage and profit from the intellectual property rights of content producers. In effect, the number of “publishers” increased many fold as the Web and other Internet-based technologies became the dominant mode of content distribution. In education, and in other fields, matters of intellectual property, copyright and quality control came to the fore. More recently, with the advent of web based software that makes publishing online available to anyone with access to the Internet the number of “publishers” and modes of publication have increased massively. The shift from a Web which was, for many a read only environment to a read/write Web poses not only ongoing problems for the traditional distributors of content but also now, for the traditional producers of content and knowledge. In this respect, the role of universities as designers and producers of learning materials for credentialed learning is also under challenge. Just as publishers explore alternative business models to adapt to the new digital environment, now universities have begun to explore new ways of working with so-called Web2 software to support teaching and learning online. In particular, some Web2 software affords new opportunities for and different modes of collaboration, which in the view of some points to student participation in knowledge production. While these developments represent important and significant shifts for universities, this paper draws attention to the lack of empirical data and situated contextual knowledge concerning intellectual property rights for knowledge constructed in a collaborative context. In addition, we explore issues in relation to the maintenance of academic integrity and quality where knowledge building takes place in a collaborative, online environment.
