We report on the preparation of wavelike surface patterns with characteristic wavelengths on thin bilayers of poly(methyl methacrylate) on azobenzene liquid crystalline polymer films (LCP/PMMA) by irradiation of a single polarized pulsed laser beam. The formation of such patterns was influenced by the thickness of the upper layer and the laser fluence. We were also able to guide the wavelike pattern to have a specific orientation by placing an elastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold on the surface of bilayer film prior to laser irradiation. Moreover, the property of the laser irradiation, that is, the selectivity through mask-projection systems, allowed us fabricating complicated micropattems for novel microdevices. Biomembrane transformations are closely related to many biological processes including endo/exocytosis and the cellular response to the local physical environment. In this work, we investigated the transformation between lipid membranes and lipid vesicles/tubes modulated by the solid substrate of graphene oxide (GO) aggregates under laser irradiation. We firstly fabricate a novel type of lipid@GO composite consisting of micrometer-sized GO aggregates surrounded by lamellar lipid membranes. Upon laser irradiation, lipid protrusion occurs and leads to the formation of vesicles adsorbed on the GO aggregate surface, with an average size as 0.43 times of the radius of GO aggregate. Both the location and the dynamic formation process of vesicles can be modulated. The arising of vesicles prefers to occur at edges of the GO planes rather than on surface of individual GO sheets within the GO aggregate. Furthermore, at a reduced laser power density, the lipid protrusion mainly grows to tubes instead of vesicles. Such transformations from lipid membrane to vesicles and tubes is ascribed to the reduction of GO to reduced-GO (rGO) under laser irradiation, probably along with the release of gases leading to the deformation of lipid membrane surrounding the GO surface.

Ag particles were generated on Ag+-doped polyimide film by laser direct writing, followed by selective copper deposition using the metallic silver particles as seeds. Laser irradiation caused in situ reduction and agglomeration of silver on the polyimide film. The copper lines were less uniform and compact with higher scanning velocity and the width of the deposited copper line could reach 25 mu m. Equations of the relationship between scanning velocity and connectivity of the deposited copper patterns have been derived. The process was characterised by AFM, XPS, SEM, and semiconductor characterisation system.

Lasting glow: Under femtosecond laser irradiation, graphene oxide nanoparticles (GONs) give strong two-photon luminescence (TPL; see picture). The presence of GONs also induces microbubbling, which causes cell death at an order of magnitude lower laser power than when cells are not labeled. The results show that GONs can be used for TPL-based imaging and photothermal cancer therapy.

Solidification microstructure is a defining link between production techniques and the mechanical properties of metals and in particular steel. Due to the difficulty of conducting solidification studies at high temperature, knowledge of the development of solidification microstructure in steel is scarce. In this study, a laser-scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) has been used to observe in situ and in real-time the planar to cellular to dendritic transition of the progressing solid/liquid interface in low carbon steel. Because the in situ observations in the laser-scanning confocal microscopy are restricted to the surface, the effect of sample thickness on surface observations was determined. Moreover, the effect of cooling rate and alloy composition on the planar to cellular interface transition was investigated. In the low-alloyed, low-carbon steel studied, the cooling rate does not seem to have an effect on the spacing of the cellular microstructure. However, in the presence of copper and manganese, the cell spacing decreased at higher cooling rates. Higher concentrations of copper in steel resulted on an increased cell spacing at the same cooling rates.
