Michael Polanyi argues in Personal Knowledge (1958) that conceptual frameworks involved in major scientific controversies are separated by a `logical gap'. Such frameworks, according to Polanyi (1958: 151), are logically disconnected: their protagonists think differently, use different languages and occupy different worlds. Relinquishing one framework and adopting another, Polanyi's scientist undergoes a `conversion' to a new `faith'. Polanyi, in other words, presaged Kuhn and Feyerabend's concept of incommensurability. To what influences was Polanyi subject as he developed his concept of the logical gap? The answer, as unfolded in this article, is twofold: Evans-Pritchard's Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic among the Azande and the Confessions of St Augustine.

The idea that 19th-century Europeans and Islanders faced each other across virtually impassable linguistic and cultural boundaries has been a model for Pacific ethnohistory and can, perhaps, be traced in part to the Sapir-Whorf theory of linguistic incommensurability. Based on a case study concerning the translation of the Aneityum [Anejom] bible in Southern Vanuatu in the mid-19th century, the article considers whether the engagement between Islanders and missionaries might be better investigated through the dynamic dialogic model of Bakhtin and Voloshinov: thus speakers and interlocutors on Aneityum actively sought to understand each other through debates and dialogues about the new deity and His place in the spiritual cosmos of the island. The article first discusses the Protestant missionary defence of linguistic parity and commensurability and the formal practices of 19th-century British bible translation; then analyses debates on the new God's efficacy between missionary John Geddie and Nohoat, the foremost sorcerer of the area; and concludes by considering the translation of words particularly important to the Christian faith.

The power of isotopic substitution for the elucidation of a reaction mechanism is illustrated with reactions named after Hofmann and Favorskii. These reactions have important roles in synthetic chemistry; therefore, a wide range of experiments involving isotopic labeling or kinetic isotope effects were employed to establish their mechanistic pathways. The concepts introduced by these investigations are drawn together with an isotopic labeling study of the oxidation of urea with hypohalites. The two mechanisms proposed for this reaction have been described as a Hofmann rearrangement and a nitrogen analogue of the Favorskii rearrangement.

Reaction of the dimethylsilylmethyl-substituted tetraorganotin derivative CH2[CH2Sn(Ph2)CH2Si(H)Me2]2 (1) and CH2[CH2Sn(Ph2)CH2Si(i-PrO)Me2]2 (3), respectively, with mercuric chloride afforded the novel silicon- and tin-containing 10- and 20-membered rings cyclo-CH2[CH2Sn(Cl2)CH2Si(Me2)]2O (4) and cyclo-CH2[CH2Sn(Cl2)CH2Si(Me2)OSi(Me2)CH2Sn(Cl2)CH2]2CH2 (5). Both compounds 4 and 5 can be converted into the soluble Lewis acidic polymer poly-[Si(Me2)CH2Sn(Cl2)(CH2)3Sn(Cl2)CH2Si(Me2)O] (8). 119Sn NMR studies indicate that 4 acts as a bidentate Lewis acid toward chloride ions, exclusively forming the 1:1 complex [cyclo-CH2[CH2Sn(Cl2)CH2Si(Me2)]2O·Cl]-[(Ph3P)2N]+ (7). The molecular structures as determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 4 and 7 are reported.

The method of Fields and Backofen has been commonly used to reduce the data obtained by hot torsion test into flow curves. The method, however, is most suitable for materials with monotonic strain hardening behaviour. Other methods such as Stüwe’s method, tubular specimens, differential testing and the inverse method, each suffer from similar drawbacks. It is shown in the current work that for materials with multiple regimes of hardening any method based on an assumption of constant hardening indices introduces some errors into the flow curve obtained from the hot torsion test. Therefore such methods do not enable accurate prediction of onset of recrystallisation where slow softening occurs. A new method to convert results from the hot torsion test into flow curves by taking into account the variation of constitutive parameters during deformation is presented. The method represents the torque twist data by a parametric linear least square model in which Euler and hyperbolic coefficients are used as the parameters. A closed form relationship obtained from the mathematical representation of the data is employed next for flow stress determination. Two different solution strategies, the method of normal equations and singular value decomposition, were used for parametric modelling of the data with hyperbolic basis functions. The performance of both methods is compared. Experimental data obtained by FHTTM, a flexible hot torsion test machine developed at IROST, for a C–Mn austenitic steel was used to demonstrate the method. The results were compared with those obtained using constant strain and strain rate hardening characteristics.

This paper is concerned with how employees talk about their experiences of organizational change and focuses specifically on the construction of conversion stories. These are particularly positive narratives that consider change as a turning point in which individuals depart from an old way of life pre-change to embrace a post-change organization. In this study, employees seek conversion into management groups and report the values and philosophies of management in their narratives, thus highlighting the benefits of change while suppressing any negative aspects. This paper draws attention to the dramatic nature of the conversion story and explores the sharp distinction between the reporting of experiences prior to and after change. We also investigate the relationship between constructing conversion stories and gaining personal and career advancement at work and suggest that beneath the positive exterior of the conversion narratives lies a theme of silence, which may be related to career advancement. Our findings suggest that such stories of silence complicate the conversion story as an example of positive organizational change and discuss implications for both the theory and practice of narrative change research.

Blood levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are considered biomarkers of status. Alpha-linolenic acid, ALA, the plant omega-3, is the dietary precursor for the long-chain omega-3 PUFA eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Studies in normal healthy adults consuming western diets, which are rich in linoleic acid (LA), show that supplemental ALA raises EPA and DPA status in the blood and in breast milk. However, ALA or EPA dietary supplements have little effect on blood or breast milk DHA levels, whereas consumption of preformed DHA is effective in raising blood DHA levels. Addition of ALA to the diets of formula-fed infants does raise DHA, but no level of ALA tested raises DHA to levels achievable with preformed DHA at intakes similar to typical human milk DHA supply. The DHA status of infants and adults consuming preformed DHA in their diets is, on average, greater than that of people who do not consume DHA. With no other changes in diet, improvement of blood DHA status can be achieved with dietary supplements of preformed DHA, but not with supplementation of ALA, EPA, or other precursors.

Nanosized materials are known to take on peculiar properties compared to the bulk material. Their electronic and mechanical properties are known to improve e.g. higher electrical conductivity and greater strength. Their electrochemical redox properties can change dramatically, e.g. in the case of Ag°, the E° value for Ag° → Ag+ + e can change by up to half a volt as the particle size decreases. Nanodimensional materials also have an extraordinarily high surface area to volume ratio. All of these properties would bring beneficial effects if they could be retained when the material is assembled into a structure capable of being used as an electrode – nanostructured electrodes.

Here we consider selected examples illustrating the importance of nanostructured electrodes in energy conversion (organic solar cells and fuel cells) and storage (batteries and capacitors). These examples involve the use of inorganic as well as organic conducting and semiconducting materials.

This paper presents a method for converting unrestricted fiction text into a time-based graphical form. Key concepts extracted from the text are used to formulate constraints describing the interaction of entities in a scene. The solution of these constraints over their respective time intervals provides the trajectories for these entities in a graphical representation.

Three types of entity are extracted from fiction books to describe the scene, namely Avatars, Areas and Objects. We present a novel method for modeling the temporal aspect of a fiction story using multiple time-line representations after which the information extracted regarding entities and time-lines is used to formulate constraints. A constraint solving technique based on interval arithmetic is used to ensure that the behaviour of the entities satisfies the constraints over multiple universally quantified time intervals. This approach is demonstrated by finding solutions to multiple time-based constraints, and represents a new contribution to the field of Text-to-Scene conversion. An example of the automatically produced graphical output is provided in support of our constraint-based conversion scheme.

This paper presents parts-of-speech tagging as a first step towards an autonomous text-to-scene conversion system. It categorizes some freely available taggers, according to the techniques used by each in order to automatically identify word-classes. In addition, the performance of each identified tagger is verified experimentally. The SUSANNE corpus is used for testing and reveals the complexity of working with different tagsets, resulting in substantially lower accuracies in our tests than in those reported by the developers of each tagger. The taggers are then grouped to form a voting system to attempt to raise accuracies, but in no cases do the combined results improve upon the individual accuracies. Additionally a new metric, agreement, is tentatively proposed as an indication of confidence in the output of a group of taggers where such output cannot be validated.
