Don Murniadi is an Indonesian who studied at the University of New South Wales in 1963. He studied on a Colombo Plan Scholarship and completed a Bachelor degree in Computer Engineering. The interview was conducted in Indonesian on 2 January 2014 by Dr. Ahmad Suaedy of the Abdurrahman Wahid Centre for Inter-faith Dialogue and Peace at Universitas Indonesia. This set comprises: an interview recording, a transcript of the interview in Indonesian, and a transcript of the interview translated into English.

This research discusses the modular design framework for designing Lab-On-a-Chip (LoC) devices. This work will help researchers to be able to focus on their research strengths, without needing to learn details of LoCs design, and they can reuse existing LoC designs.

This article reports on the introduction of a computer-conferencing component into a first-year study unit in technology management at Deakin University, Australia. It was found that significant variations in computer usage were correlated to student study mode, including source of computer access, source of Internet access, hours-per-week computer usage, regular use of e-mail, regular use of the Internet, number of times the conference was accessed, use of computers for games, and use of computers for learning. Other moderate differences were also noted. Following exposure to the computer conference, on-campus students were more likely to agree that computers could assist their learning, and off-campus students were less likely to agree that learning from computers would be better than classes/lectures.

A longitudinal analysis of computer usage by commencing students in Deakin University's undergraduate engineering and technology programs over the period 1998 to 2001 revealed that; access to computers was at high levels; mean computer usage for off campus students had not changed significantly, but had risen significantly for on campus students; while access to the Internet / WWW had not increased significantly, reported regular use of the Internet / WWW had risen significantly; while most students continued to report their source of Internet / WWW access as either home or university, the proportion reporting home as their source of access had risen significantly; and the reported regular use of email rose significantly. Other results are also presented.

These results imply that commencing engineering and technology students are well placed to adopt online delivery and support of teaching and learning. However, while it might now be reasonable to assume that all students have access to computers and the Internet, the experiences of on campus students in computer laboratories with broadband network access will be different from off campus students accessing the Internet via a dialup modem connection. A small proportion of commencing students were unaware of the computing facilities provided by the university; an orientation program covering computing facilities and services would benefit all commencing students.

Computers and information technology play an important role in engineering education at the School of Engineering and Technology, Deakin University, Australia. Experience has shown that there are significant demographic differences between on- and off-campus engineering student groups. It was thought that the differences in the student groups might also lead to differences in computer usage patterns between the groups. A survey on computer usage was undertaken to determine the computer usage patterns of students at the commencement of their studies. The survey revealed differences between on- and off-campus students in whether students indicated they were regular computer users (on-campus = 77.2%, off-campus = 94.7%), the average reported hours per week usage of computers (on-campus = 6.0 h, off-campus = 23.3 h), the reported source of computer access, whether students indicated they were regular users of e-mail (on-campus = 29.8%, off-campus = 73.7%), whether students indicated they were regular users of the World Wide Web (on-campus = 38.6%, off-campus = 68.4%), and the reported source of World Wide Web access. It is proposed that the differing personal circumstances of the two student groups may contribute to the difference in survey responses.

This paper presents a brief history of the use of online technologies in the support of teaching and learning in the School of Engineering and Technology at Deakin University, Victoria, Australia. It addresses the following topics: flexible engineering programs at Deakin University; computer-based learning in the School of Engineering and Technology; progression from individual efforts to formal, centralized control of the World Wide Web (Web); the costs of information technology; experiences with grant funded development projects; managing the development of online material; student access and equity; and staff development and cultural change. A sustainable online content development model is proposed to carry the School’s online initiatives in support of teaching and learning activities into the future.

Process management is a crucial issue in developing information or computer systems. Theories of software development process management suggest that the process should be supported and managed based on what the process really is. However, our learning from an action research study reveals that the requirements engineering (RE) process differs significantly from that which the current literature tends to describe. The process is not a systematic, smooth and incremental evolution of the requirements model, but involves occasional simplification and restructuring of the requirements model. This revised understanding of the RE process suggests a new challenge to both the academic and industrial communities, demanding new process management approaches. In this paper, we present our understanding of the RE process and its implications for process management.

The risk of failure of the software development process remains high despite many attempts to improve the quality of software engineering. Contemporary approaches to process assurance, such as the capability maturity model have not prevented systemic failures, nor have project management methodologies provided guarantees of software quality. The paper proposes an approach to software quality assurance based on a knowledge mediated concurrent audit, which incorporates essential feedback processes. Through a tightly integrated approach to quality audit, programmers would be empowered to use any chosen methodology to advantage, supported by intelligent monitoring of the essential interactions which occur in the development process. Deakin University in Australia is one of the leading providers of distance education in the South Pacific region. The School of Engineering offers four-year professional engineering-degree programs and three-year technologist programs. The over 600 total students studying engineering at Deakin fall into four categories:

• 18-19 year-old students fresh from high school, who largely study on-campus,
• older students in the technical workforce, seeking a university degree to upgrade their qualifications,
• industry-based students studying in university-industry partnership programs,
• overseas students studying either on-campus, or off-campus through education partners in Malaysia and Singapore.

Geographically these students form a very wide student base. The study programs are designed to produce multi-skilled, broadly focused engineers and technologists with multi-disciplinary technical competence, and the ability to take a systems approach to design and operational performance. A team of around 25 academic staff deliver courses in seven different majors in the general fields of manufacturing, environmental engineering, mechatronics, and computer systems. We discuss here the history of the School, its teaching philosophy, and its unique methods in delivering engineering education to a widely scattered student body.

There exist multiple objectives in engineering management such as minimum cost and maximum service capacity. Although solution methods of multiobjective optimization problems have undergone continual development over the past several decades, the methods available to date are not particularly robust, and none of them performs well on the broad classes. Because genetic algorithms work with a population of points, they can capture a number of solutions simultaneously, and easily incorporate the concept of Pareto optimal set in their optimization process. In this paper, a genetic algorithm is modified to deal with the rehabilitation planning of bridge decks at a network level by minimizing the rehabilitation cost and deterioration degree simultaneously.
