A series of oligomethylene-bridged diorganotin triflates R(OTf)2Sn(CH2)nSn(OTf)2R (R = CH2SiMe3; n = 3, 4, 8, 10) were synthesized by reaction of triflic acid with the precursor oxides R(O)Sn(CH2)nSn(O)R. On the basis of 119Sn NMR (in acetonitrile) the triflates appear to be the simple six-coordinated ionic species [(MeCN)4(RSn(CH2)nSnR)(MeCN)4]2+. These triflates readily undergo hydrolysis to give products, the identity of which depends on the length of the oligomethylene bridge. For n = 3 (5), the solid-state structure shows association of two dimeric units, which results in a tetracationic double ladder. Extensive hydrogen bonding gives rise to a supramolecular association. Solution 119Sn NMR and ES MS suggest some dissociation of 5 into dimers containing four tin atoms and possibly monomers containing two tin atoms. A rudimentary solid-state structure for n = 4 (6) indicates a linear polymer based on dimeric (four tin atoms) units. The structure of 6 also features extensive hydrogen bonding, this time effectively giving rise to alternating layers of cations and anions.

Polystyrene nanofibres were electrospun with the inclusion of cationic surfactants, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) or tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC), in the polymer solution. A small amount of cationic surfactant effectively stopped the formation of beaded fibres during the electrospinning. The cationic surfactants were also found to improve the solution conductivity, but had no effect on the viscosity. Only DTAB had an effect on the surface tension of the polymer solution, the surface tension decreasing slightly with an increase in the concentration of DTAB.

The formation of beaded fibres was attributed to an insufficient stretch of the filaments during the whipping of the jet, due to a low charge density. Adding the cationic surfactants improved the net charge density that enhanced the whipping instability. The jet was stretched under stronger charge repulsion and at a higher speed, resulting in an exhaustion of the bead structure. In addition, a polymer/surfactant interaction was found in the polystyrene–DTAB solution system, while this interaction was not found in the polystyrene–TBAC system. The polymer/surfactant interaction led to the formation of thinner fibres than those formed in the absence of the interaction.

The effects of a non-ionic surfactant, Triton X-405, on the electrospun fibres were also studied. The addition of Triton X-405 did not eliminate the fibre beads, but reduced the bead numbers and changed the morphology. Triton X-405 slightly improved the solution conductivity, and had a minor effect on the surface tension, but no effect on the viscosity.

PAN nanofibres were prepared via an electrospinning process. The effect of polymer concentration on the fibre morphology was studied. At a very dilute solution, no fibres were obtained in the electrospinning process. As the concentration increased, the fibre morphology evolved from a beads-on-string structure to a uniform fibre structure with increasing fibre diameters. However, when the same electrospinning process was conducted with the addition of a cationic surfactant, the formation of disconnected beads was prevented, and the number of beads-on-string structures reduced significantly. In addition, the presence of cationic surfactant reduced the average diameter of the electrospun PAN nanofibres.

Insulin-regulated aminopeptidase (IRAP), a marker of glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) storage vesicles (GSVs), is the only protein known to traffic with GLUT4. In the basal state, GSVs are sequestered from the constitutively recycling endosomal system to an insulin-responsive, intracellular pool. Insulin induces a rapid translocation of GSVs to the cell surface from this pool, resulting in the incorporation of IRAP and GLUT4 into the plasma membrane. We sought to identify proteins that interact with IRAP to further understand this GSV trafficking process. This study describes our identification of a novel interaction between the amino terminus of IRAP and the Akt substrate, AS160 (Akt substrate of 160 kDa). The validity of this interaction was confirmed by coimmunoprecipitation of both overexpressed and endogenous proteins. Moreover, confocal microscopy demonstrated colocalization of these proteins. In addition, we demonstrate that the IRAP-binding domain of AS160 falls within its second phosphotyrosine-binding domain and the interaction is not regulated by AS160 phosphorylation. We hypothesize that AS160 is localized to GLUT4-containing vesicles via its interaction with IRAP where it inhibits the activity of Rab substrates in its vicinity, effectively tethering the vesicles intracellularly.

The reaction of the group 14 tetrachlorides MCl4 (M = Si, Ge, Sn) with oleum (65 % SO3) at elevated temperatures led to the unique anionic complexes [M(S2O7)3]2– that show the central M atoms in coordination of three chelating S2O72– groups. The mean distances M–O within the complexes increase from 175 pm (M = Si) via 186 pm (M = Ge) up to 200 pm (M = Sn). The charge balance for the [M(S2O7)3]2– anions is achieved by alkaline metal ions A+ (A = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) which were implemented in the syntheses in form of their sulfates. The size of the A+ ions, i.e. their coordination requirement causes the crystallographic differences in the crystal structures, while the structure of the complex [M(S2O7)3]2– anions remains essentially unaffected. Furthermore, we were able to characterize the unique germanate Hg2[Ge(S2O7)3]Cl2 which forms when HgCl2 is added as a source for the counter cation. The Hg2+ and the Cl– ions form infinite cationic chains according to 1∞[HgCl2/2]+ which take care for the charge compensation. For selected examples of the compounds the thermal behavior has been monitored by means of thermal analyses and X-ray powder diffraction. For A being an alkaline metal the decomposition product is a mixture of the sulfates A2SO4 and the dioxides MO2, whereas Hg2[Ge(S2O7)3]Cl2 shows a more complicated decomposition. The tris-(disulfato)-silicate Na2[Si(S2O7)3] has additionally been examined by solid state 29Si and 23Na NMR spectroscopic measurements.

Cell membrane changes its morphology during many physiological processes with the assistance of a solid support, such as the cytoskeleton, under an environmental stimulus. Here, a novel type of stimuli-responsive lipogel was fabricated, mimicking the changes of cell membrane. The lipogel was prepared from poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) microgel particle and phospholipid by a solvent-exchange method. The temperature dependent volume phase transition of pNIPAM triggers reversible transformation of the lipogel between a lipid vesicle-coated sun-like structure and a contracted hybrid sphere, through lipid merging and protrusion processes, respectively. By contrast, the salt induced pNIPAM phase transition leads to an irreversible vesicle release behaviour. The lipogel creates a unique platform for studying cell membrane behaviour and provides promising candidates in drug delivery and controlled release applications. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. A series of norbornane containing amphiphiles was synthesized, their lipophilicity corresponding to neutral and cationic forms was then investigated using reverse phase HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography). This series of amphiphiles incorporated varied lipophilic chain length and also varied distances between the polar/cationic head group from the norbornane scaffold. Our investigation included studying the impact of the stationary phase as a replication of a membrane for both cationic and neutral amphiphiles. The choice of stationary phase was shown to be a very important consideration for this type of measurement. In this connection, C18, Cyano and Polar columns were all investigated, the cyano column was observed to be the optimal stationary phase for the comparison of both charged and neutral amphiphiles.

A series of structurally amphiphilic biscationic norbornanes have been synthesised as rigidified, low molecular weight peptidomimetics of cationic antimicrobial peptides. A variety of charged hydrophilic functionalities were attached to the norbornane scaffold including aminium, guanidinium, imidazolium and pyridinium moieties. Additionally, a range of hydrophobic groups of differing sizes were incorporated through an acetal linkage. The compounds were evaluated for antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Activity was observed across the series; the most potent of which exhibited an MIC's ≤ 1 μg mL(-1) against Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis and several strains of Staphylococcus aureus, including multi-resistant methicillin resistant (mMRSA), glycopeptide-intermediate (GISA) and vancomycin-intermediate (VISA) S. aureus.
