This article reports on the integration of music with other ‘Arts’ in teacher training at a South African university where a challenge tertiary educators face is how to successfully integrate music within the Arts and Culture learning area of the school education system. The article firstly provides a brief background to the South African educational context. Secondly, it outlines current practices in the in the implementation of the integrated arts curriculum in schools and teacher training. Thirdly, it discusses pertinent issues and challenges in relation to team teaching, integration and curriculum change in teacher training. Given the constraints and opportunities that universities currently experience, this article investigates and reports on the issue of whether students should be trained as Jack of all trades and master of some…or none or Master of one trade and Jack of some with regard to integrating the Arts.

Jorge Lorenzo Flores Garza’s On the Road by Jack Kerouac had its Australian premiere in July this year at the Walker Street Gallery in Melbourne. It screened as part of the ‘Outside the Outside’ series curated by Dirk de Bruyn and Glenn D’Cruz, and was introduced by Steven McIntyre.

On the Road by Jack Kerouac is the most recent work by Mexican filmmaker Jorge Lorenzo, whose previous 1/48” (2008) was listed in Cahiers du Cinéma’s top 10 most subversive films of all time. Somewhere between a book on a film, and a film of a book, Lorenzo’s work is an exact re-typing of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, made by threading a continuous roll of 35mm negative (like Kerouac’s original scroll) through a Olivetti typewriter.

Present operating systems are not built to support parallel computing on clusters - they do not provide services to manage parallelism, i.e., to manage parallel processes and cluster resources. They do not provide support for both programming paradigms, Message Passing (MP) or Distributed Shared Memory (DSM). Due to poor operating systems, users must deal with computers of a cluster rather than to see this cluster as a single powerful computer. There is a need for cluster operating systems. We claim that it is possible to develop a cluster operating system that is able to efficiently manage parallelism, support MP and DSM and offer transparency. To substantiate this claim the first version of a cluster operating system managing parallelism and offering transparency, called GENESIS, has been developed.

Using a high-frequency data set of the spot Australian dollar/US dollar this study examines the distribution of quotes and returns across the 24 hour trading "day". Employing statistical methods for measuring long-tenn dependence in time-series we find evidence of time-varying dependence and volatility that aligns with the opening and closing of markets. This variation is attributed to the effects of liquidity and the price-discovery actions of dealers.

This report describes an implementation of MPI-1 on the GENESIS cluster operating system and compares this implementation to a UNIX based MPI implementation. The changes that were made to the implementation are compared between the two, and the advantages of porting to GENESIS are detailed. This report demonstrates how GENESIS load balancing supported by process migration improves the execution performance of an MPI application. The significance of this report is in demonstrating how these services can enhance parallel programming tools to improve performance and how future parallel programming tool design could take advantage of these services.
