Adopting reflexive capability in international briefing

Purpose – The aim of the paper is to investigate the architectural firm's role in the briefing process on international projects and to identify the strategies of successful firms to overcome barriers.

Design/methodology/approach – A model is developed based on a critique of briefing models and international design management theory. The development of a reflexive capability model borrows cultural theory concepts of capital and reflexivity. The model is based on maximizing reflexive capability through the management of social, cultural and intellectual capital. Two case studies of architectural firms identify barriers during the briefing process and strategies to overcome these barriers. Data collection involved 16 interviews with senior management and design team staff.

Findings – There are various barriers and strategies used to achieve success in the briefing process. However, the management of a firm's capital is key to successful briefing on international projects and is a characteristic of reflexive practice. Reflexivity is based in a positive interpretation of change, and a continual responsiveness to change by participants in a system. The study provides useful information on management of the design and briefing stages of international projects.

Research limitations/implications – The study is limited by the number of case studies used and the difficulty of generalisability of findings.

Practical implications – The research is that it provides useful information about how to approach constant change during briefing for the architects and clients who work on international projects.

Originality/value – The model is original and has value as it assists in explaining why some firms are more successful than others. The case studies provide new knowledge on international projects and the briefing process. The value of the paper is for the academic community, professionals in the built environment and clients involved in international projects.

Collaboration Down Under : investigating team learning in Australia in architecture and related design contexts

This position paper reports on an Australian Learning Teaching Council (ALTC) funded project – “Enhancing and Assessing Group and Team Learning in Architecture and Related Design Contexts.” This is a two-year project, commencing in November 2011, which is investigating best practice in Australian higher education for the teaching of teamwork in the design disciplines, with a focus on Architecture. At the time of the conference presentation, data on current practices will be reported on that has been collected and analysed from four universities in Australia. The project aims to: highlight and develop innovative approaches to collaborative studio-based learning; structure team learning within curricula; develop graduate attributes for teamwork; and inform assessment of team design that supports team-working skills and increased learner confidence.

Is the migrant house in Australia an Australian vernacular architecture?

This report seeks to understand the meaning of the migrant house in Melbourne, Australia. Following a discussion of the Australian vernacular house, it asks what it is that makes the migrant house a unique category, different from other, nonmigrant houses in Australia. Reporting on research on seventeen migrant houses in the suburbs of Melbourne, it then shows how three architectural elements - the facade, the terrace, and the back yard - differentiate these houses from other examples of the Australian vernacular. Finally, it argues that, through their different "migrant aesthetics," the three architectural elements illustrate how soda-spatial features have facilitated and eased the adaptation of migrants to life in Australia.

Media use in the design studio: a case study of second year architecture

This paper outlines a case study of media use within a second year design studio at Deakin University in Victoria. Australia. The case study involves an active cohort of students working on four design projects, each staged to address specific aspects of tectonics and conceptual design. The research is based on three questionnaires, a focus group discussion and analysis of assessment and digital folios to explore the way students use digital, analogue and hybrid media within their design projects. Relationships arc drawn between media use within projects and student perceptions of the benefits of using particular media within projects of a conceptual or tectonic nature.
