Simulating the change from a push to pull production system

This paper will document the initial discrete-event simulation performed to study a proposed change from a push to a pull system in an existing manufacturing company. The system is characterised by five machine lines with intermediate buffers, and five major part groupings. A simulation model has been developed to mimic the flow of kanban cards in the physical system, by using a series of requests that propagate back through the facility, which the machines must respond to. The customer
demand therefore controls the level of activity in the plant. The results of the initial modelling steps will be presented in this paper, especially the impact of kanban lot size and demand variability on the output and stability of the production system, from which a set of future work is proposed.

Session initiation protocol (SIP) based event notification system architecture for telemedicine applications

Mobility service for hospital technicians involved in telemedicine applications is one of the key issues in providing more flexible and efficient in-house or remote health care services. Today, the Internet based communication has widened the opportunity of event monitoring systems in the medical field. The session initiation protocol (SIP) can work on a variety of devices and can be used to create a medical event notification system. Its adoption as the protocol of choice for third generation wireless networks allows for a robust and scalable environment. One of the advantages of SIP is that it supports personal mobility through the separation of user addressing and device addressing. In this paper, the authors propose a possible solution framework for telemedicine alert notification system based SIP-specific event notification.

Managing stakeholder 'push back', an exploratory investigation into dealing with negative cross cultural communication in a global environment

This paper addresses the issue of a current business phenomenon – ‘push back’. This phenomenon has been experienced by a number of transnational companies. It is embedded in the challenges of cross-cultural communication and involves the linkage of local culture activists with globalisation acitivists in an alliance to stop business growth. This exploratory investigation examines three multinational organisations using qualitative research. From the findings a model has been developed in an attempt to provide practitioners with a framework with which to understand ‘push back’. The complexity of combating alliances of this nature raises challenges for the current approaches to marketing and the need for a multi-stakeholder approach in cross-cultural communication is suggested.

Scaling-up foreign aid : will the 'big push' work?

International donors are substantially scaling-up aid programmes. At the same time, there are widespread reservations over how much aid recipient countries can use effectively. Such concerns are supported by the aid effectiveness literature which finds that there are limits to the amounts of aid recipients can efficiently absorb. This article demonstrates that a ‘big push’ in foreign aid will not lead to diminishing returns as long as donors get the inter-country allocation of aid right. This is true even if donors provide aid at levels equal to the well-known target of 0.7 per cent of their gross national income

The impact of community notification on the management of sex offenders in the community : an Australian perspective

Western Australia recently passed legislation that allows information about convicted sex offenders to be disclosed to the general public. After critically appraising the rationale behind community notification, this paper considers its impact on offenders’ reintegration into the community and their subsequent risk of reoffending, its potential deterrent effect and usefulness as a management tool, and implementation issues. This discussion identifies several factors that potentially moderate the effectiveness of community notification schemes and some directions for future research and the development of policy and practices in this area.

Analysis of backward congestion notification with delay for enhanced Ethernet networks

At present, companies and standards organizations are enhancing Ethernet as the unified switch fabric for all of the TCP/IP traffic, the storage traffic and the high performance computing traffic in data centers. Backward congestion notification (BCN) is the basic mechanism for the end-to-end congestion management enhancement of Ethernet. To fulfill the special requirements of the unified switch fabric, i.e., losslessness and low transmission delay, BCN should hold the buffer occupancy around a target point tightly. Thus, the stability of the control loop and the buffer size are critical to BCN. Currently, the impacts of delay on the performance of BCN are unidentified. When the speed of Ethernet increases to 40 Gbps or 100 Gbps in the near future, the number of on-the-fly packets becomes the same order with the buffer size of switch. Accordingly, the impacts of delay will become significant. In this paper, we analyze BCN, paying special attention on the delay. We model the BCN system with a set of segmented delayed differential equations, and then deduce sufficient condition for the uniformly asymptotic stability of BCN. Subsequently, the bounds of buffer occupancy are estimated, which provides direct guidelines on setting buffer size. Finally, numerical analysis and experiments on the NetFPGA platform verify our theoretical analysis.
