Mg-Zn binary alloys with concentrations between 0 and 2.8wt% Zn have been prepared and processed via hot rolling and annealing to produce specimens with a strong basal texture and a range of grain sizes. These have been deformed in tension, a condition in which the deformation is dominated by prismatic slip. This data has been used to assess the Hall-Petch parameter as a function of Zn concentration for deformation dominated by prismatic slip. Pure magnesium showed non-linear Hall-Petch behaviour at large grain sizes, and this is compared to the values for prismatic slip measured on single crystals. The differences between critical resolved shear stress measurements made through single crystal, polycrystal and mathematical modelling techniques are also discussed.

Magnesium-zinc alloys with and without rare earth metals were examined. Particles form when rare earth metals are present and these affect the development of the internal structures in the alloys. Finer, more numerous and more uniformly distributed particles result in alloys with the best combination of high strength and ductility.

Additions of rare earth elements to magnesium alloys are qualitatively reported in the literature to retard recrystallisation. However, their effect in the presence of other (non-rare earth) alloy additions has not been systematically shown nor has the effect been quantified. The microstructural restoration following the hot deformation of Mg-xZn-yRE (x = 2.5 and 5 wt.%, y = 0 and 1 wt.%, and RE = Gd and Y) alloys has been studied using double hit compression testing and microscopy. It was found that, in the absence of rare earth additions, increases in zinc level had a negligible influence on the kinetics of restoration and the microstructure developed both during extrusion and throughout double hit testing. Adding rare earth elements to Mg-Zn alloys was found to retard restoration of the microstructure and maintain finer recrystallised grains. However, in the Mg-Zn-RE alloys, increasing the zinc concentration from 2.5 wt.% to 5 wt.% accelerated the restoration process, most likely due to a depletion of rare earth elements from solid solution and modification of the particles present in the matrix.

Extruded Mg-Zn-RE alloys have been shown to exhibit excellent combinations of yield strength and ductility, but it is not completely clear how adding rare earth metals to Mg-Zn alters the microstructure and affects the mechanical properties. Microstructural changes and the resulting mechanical properties from changes in composition and extrusion temperature have been investigated for Mg-. x Zn-. y RE (. x=2.5 and 5. wt.%, y=0 and 1. wt. %, and RE=Gd and Y) alloys. Adding RE to Mg-Zn increased the strength and reduced the ductility, while increasing the zinc concentration in the Mg-Zn-RE alloys had the reverse effect.

Extruded Mg-1Mn-2Zn-xNd alloys (x=0.5, 1.0, 1.5 mass %) have been developed for their potential use as biomaterials. The extrusion on the alloys was performed at temperature of 623K with an extrusion ratio of 14.7 under an average extrusion speed of 4mm/s. The microstructure, mechanical property, corrosion behavior and biocompatibility of the extruded Mg-Mn-Zn-Nd alloys have been investigated in this study. The microstructure was examined using X-ray diffraction analysis and optical microscopy. The mechanical properties were determined from uniaxial tensile and compressive tests. The corrosion behavior was investigated using electrochemical measurement. The biocompatibility was evaluated using osteoblast-like SaOS2 cells. The experimental results indicate that all extruded Mg-1Mn-2Zn-xNd alloys are composed of both α phase of Mg and a compound of Mg7Zn3 with very fine microstructures, and show good ductility and much higher mechanical strength than that of cast pure Mg and natural bone. The tensile strength and elongation of the extruded alloys increase with an increase in neodymium content. Their compressive strength does not change significantly with an increase in neodymium content. The extruded alloys show good biocompatibility and much higher corrosion resistance than that of cast pure Mg. The extruded Mg-1Mn-2Zn-1.0Nd alloy shows a great potential for biomedical applications due to the combination of enhanced mechanical properties, high corrosion resistance and good biocompatibility.

The mechanical behavior under uniaxial tension of Al-Mg alloy 5182 pre-deformed in conventional rolling (CR), asymmetric rolling-continuous (ASRC), and asymmetric rolling-reversed (ASRR) was investigated and modeled with a rate dependent crystal plasticity finite element method and VPSC (Visco-Plastic Self Consistent) model. M-K theory combined with Yld2000 model by Barlat et al. (Int. J. Plasticity 2003, 19, 1297) was used to predict the strain-based and stress-based formability for AA 5182 material. It was concluded that the new ASRR process has very compatible formability with improved strength compared to CR process. These merits can be directly applied for clam-shell resistant design in rigid-packaging industry.

The unfavourable effect of hooking or softening, respectively, on fracture strength of joints made using friction stir lap welding (FSLW) is known but the combined effect on the magnitude of strength reduction is not clear. In this study, FSLW experiments using AA6060-T5 and AZ31B-H24 alloys were conducted. For both alloys, rotation speed has a dominant effect on increasing the hook size due to increasing the stir flow volume thus lifting more the original lapping surfaces. In AA6060 welds, FS softening has limited the strength, when hook size approaches zero. Meanwhile hook starts to reduce the strength significantly, when its size reaches a critical value. The maximum strength of AA6060 FSL welds reaches ~ 70% of the base metal UTS when hook size approaches zero. This is in contract to ~30% for AZ31B FSL welds. This can be explained by the local plastic deformation behaviour during lap tensile testing.

The aim of this work was to assess a number of coatings developed for Mg for biomedical applications. The Mg substrates were high-purity (HP) Mg and ME10, an alloy recently developed for improved extrudability. The research utilized the new fishing-line specimen configuration to allow direct comparison to our recent in vivo and in vitro measurements. The in vitro measurements were immersion tests of fishing-line specimens immersed in Nor's solution at 37 °C. Tests of substantial duration are needed because the corrosion rates of uncoated samples are low. Nor's solution is the designation given to Hank's solution through which CO2 is bubbled at a partial pressure of 0.009 atm. In this solution, pH is maintained constant by the interaction of CO2 and the bicarbonate ions in the solution. This is the same buffer as that which maintains the pH of blood. Coatings examined were: (i) an anodization using a bio-friendly alkaline electrolyte consisting of phosphate, borate, and metasilicate, (ii) octyltrimethoxysilane (OSi), (iii) 1,2-bis[triethoxysilyl]ethane (BTSE), (iv) anodization+OSi, and (v) anodization + BTSE. The performance of coated samples was comparable to or better than that of the uncoated samples, and there was a substantially better performance for the ME10 samples after anodization+OSi. Reasons for the various performances are discussed.

Microalloying trace elements into aluminum alloys have been shown to improve mechanical properties by altering the precipitation process. Here, trace amounts of Sn and (Sn + Ag) have been added to Al-1.1Cu-1.7Mg (at.%) and the effects have been investigated by a combination of hardness testing and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Hardness testing shows that the addition of Sn increases the hardness throughout the ageing process, and in combination with Ag, further increases the hardness and shortens the time to reach the peak hardness. The increase in hardness via Sn microalloying is attributed to the homogeneous distribution of S phase (Al2CuMg) precipitates. In the alloy microalloyed with both Sn and Ag, the microstructure is dominated by homogeneously distributed Ω phase (Al2Cu) precipitates in the peak strengthened condition. Given that neither spherical β-Sn precipitates, nor any other obvious nucleation sites for the Ω phase precipitates were observed using TEM, the mechanism for development of such homogeneous precipitation remains to be determined.

The present paper examines the development of grain size during the recrystallization of magnesium alloys and the influence the grain size has on the mechanical response. In magnesium alloys grain refinement improves the strength-ductility balance. This simultaneous increase in both strength and ductility is ascribed to the impact the grain size has on deformation twinning. The mechanisms by which the grain size is established during hot working are shown to be conventional dynamic recrystallization followed by post-dynamic recrystallization. The role of alloying additionon both of these reactions is briefly considered.

A recent trial investigated the effect of solidification grain refinement of billet on the grain refinement and properties of alloy ZM20. It was found that even at levels of 0.4Mn, significant grain refinement could be obtained when 0.7Zr was added. At 0.2Mn grain sizes as low as 60μm were
obtained. Billets of Mg-2Zn-0.2Mn with four different grain sizes, due to different Zr and cooling rates were then cast via vertical direct chill casting and extruded conventionally. Benefits of grain refinement of the billet on extrusion were found to be a slight increase in the size of the operating
window, and a reduction of the grain size in the extrudate. However, the effect of the reduction in extrudate grain size due to refinement of the billet was small compared with the amount of grain refinement obtained due to recrystallisation on extrusion.

The microstructure and mechanical response of three extruded magnesium alloys, Mg-3Al-1Zn (AZ31), Mg-1.5Mn (Ml) and Mg-lMn-0.4RE (ME10) are examined. The tensile yield strength of ME10 was nearly half that of AZ31 and Ml. The tensile elongations were 6%, 11% and 19% for Ml, AZ31 and ME10, respectively. This range of properties is large and is attributed to the unique extrusion texture produced in ME10, and the high density of fine particles in Ml.
