Experimental evaluation of curl and tensile properties of advanced high strength sheet steels

The response of HSLA steel, 590R, and dual-phase steel, DP-600, to non-uniform deformation imposed in a laboratory Bending-Under-Tension (BUT) test apparatus was evaluated. Samples were deformed with both low and high back tension forces at bend angles of 45 and 90 degrees, and evaluated to determine the ""side-wall curl,"" i.e., the curvature in the sheet section in contact with the die. The results indicate that there are no consistent differences between the two steels, 590R and DP-600. It was found that back tension, tensile strength and sheet thickness were the primary factors affecting curl. The bend angle has an influence on curl, with the curl radius at a 90ø bend angle being greater than the curl radius at a 45\mD bend angle.

Learning to minimize energy costs and maximize mechanical work in a bimanual coordination task

The authors addressed the hypothesis that economy in motor coordination is a learning phenomenon realized by both reduced energy cost for a given workload and more external work at the same prepractice metabolic and attentional energy expenditure. "Self-optimization" of movement parameters has been proposed to reflect learned motor adaptations that minimize energy costs. Twelve men aged 22.3 [+ or -] 3.9 years practiced a 90[degrees] relative phase, upper limb, independent ergometer cycling task at 60 rpm, followed by a transfer test of unpracticed (45 and 75 rpm) and self-paced cadences. Performance in all conditions was initially unstable, inaccurate, and relatively high in both metabolic and attentional energy costs. With practice, coordinative stability increased, more work was performed for the same metabolic and attentional costs, and the same work was done at a reduced energy cost. Self-paced cycling was initially below the metabolically optimal, but following practice at 60 rpm was closer to optimal cadence. Given the many behavioral options of the motor system in meeting a variety of everyday movement task goals, optimal metabolic and attentional energy criteria may provide a solution to the problem of selecting the most adaptive coordination and control parameters.

Improved cathodic disbondment performance of polyethylene blends

Cathodic disbondment (CD) performance of a range of modified polyethylenes (PE) compression molded on to steel plates at 320[degrees]C is reported. Adhesion strength was measured by the 90[degrees] peel test and good dry adhesion strength was obtained for all modified polyethylene materials and blends, as well as for the neat polymer. It is shown that dry bond strength does not correlate with CD performance. Initial results of wet peel tests of samples in various concentrations of NaOH are presented where it is observed that for samples with improved wet adhesion strength, CD performance was also Improved. Surface polarity was determined from contact angle measurements, and it is shown that increased surface polarity of the coating was not the only determinant for improved CD performance. Inorganic fillers such as talc were also found to improve CD performance by changing the bulk properties, with little measurable change in polarity. Some mechanistic aspects of CD performance are also discussed.

Labour market institutions and the gender wage gap in Britain and Australia, 1973-90

The importance of wage structure is frequently interpreted as indirect evidence of the role played by labour market institutions. The current paper follows in this tradition, examining the role of wage structure in explaining the trend in the gender wage gap over the period 1973–91 for both Australia and the UK. The focus is upon whether changes in wage structure (and associated gender wage gap) both across country and over time are compatible with institutional explanations. Combining comparisons both cross‐country and over time yields a more stringent, albeit indirect, test of the role of institutions.

Do MBA degrees matter? A study of boards of directors in Australia's top 200 companies

Pfeffer and Fong (2002) suggest that “business school enrolments have soared and business education has become a big business”. The Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree has often been held out to be useful in the career development of managers. The highest level that managers can aspire to, is to be a director of a large public company. This study investigates how many directors within the boards of Australia’s top 200 companies by market capitalization hold an MBA degree. We find that larger companies have proportionally more MBA holding directors than smaller companies. Interestingly we also find that proportionally more women hold MBAs than men; nearly one in five women directors hold an MBA within the top 200 companies dataset.

Influence of low-strain deformation characteristics of high strength sheet steel on curl and springback in bend-under-tension tests

The influence of low-strain deformation behavior on curl and springback in advanced high strength steels (AHSS) was assessed using a bend-under-tension test. The effect of yielding behavior on curl and springback was examined by heat-treating two dual-phase steels to induce yield point elongation, while keeping a relatively constant tensile strength and a constant sheet thickness. A dual-phase and TRIP steel with similar initial thickness and tensile strengths were also examined to investigate the effect of work-hardening on curl and springback. It is shown that while current understanding limits prediction of curl and springback in bending under tension using only the initial sheet thickness and tensile strength, both the yielding and work-hardening behavior can affect the results. Explanations for these effects are proposed in terms of the discontinuous yielding and flow stress in the materials.

Effect of glycerol-induced hyperhydration on thermoregulation and metabolism during exercise in the heat

This study examined the effect of glycerol ingestion on fluid homeostasis, thermoregulation, and metabolism during rest and exercise. Six endurance-trained men ingested either 1 g glycerol in 20 ml H₂O.kg^-1 body weight (bw) (GLY) or 20 ml H₂O.kg^-1bw (CON) in a randomized double-blind fashion, 120 min prior to undertaking 90 min of steady state cycle exercise (SS) at 98 % of lactate threshold in dry heat (35 degrees C, 30 % RH), with ingestion of CHO-electrolyte beverage (6 % CHO) at 15-min intervals. A 15-min cycle, where performance was quantified in kJ, followed (PC). Pre-exercise urine volume was lower in GLY than CON (1119 ± 97 vs. 1503 ± 146 ml· 120 min^-1; p < .05). Heart rate was lower (p < .05) throughout SS in GLY, while forearm blood flow was higher (17.1 ± 1.5 vs. 13.7 ± 3.0 ml.100 g tissue·min^-1; p < .05) and rectal  temperature lower (38.7 ± 0.1 vs. 39.1 ± 0.1 ° C; p < .05) in GLY late in SS. Despite these changes, skin and muscle temperatures and circulating catecholamines were not different between trials. Accordingly, no differences were observed in muscle glycogenolysis, lactate accumulation, adenine nucleotide, and phosphocreatine degradation or inosine 5'-monophosphate accumulation when comparing GLY with CON. Of note, the work performed during PC was 5 % greater in GLY (252 ± 10 vs. 240 ± 9 kJ; p < .05). These results demonstrate that glycerol, when ingested with a bolus of water 2 hours prior to exercise, results in fluid retention, which is capable of reducing cardiovascular strain and enhancing thermoregulation. Furthermore, this practice increases exercise performance in the heat by mechanisms other than alterations in muscle metabolism.

The study identifies that there is wide variation in offerings, indicating that different degrees are striving to achieve different objectives, i.e. training for PhD, advanced studies in marketing, conversion courses for those without marketing degrees or accreditation for those in the industry.
