This paper derives some new conditions for the bivariate characteristic polynomial of an uncertain matrix to be very strict Hurwitz. The uncertainties are assumed of the structured and unstructured type. By using the two-dimensional (2-D) inverse Laplace transform, the bounds on the uncertainties are derived which will ensure that the bivariate characteristic polynomial to be very strict Hurwitz. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the results.

Laser beam spot-welding is widely applied to join sheet metals for automotive components especially for thinsheet components in automotive industries. The spot welds in such metallic structures contribute a lot to the integrated strength and fatigue life for the whole structures and they are responsible for their damage or collapse in some loading cases. In this paper, the 2-D hybrid special finite elements each containing an edge crack are employed to study the fracture behaviors of laser beam spot-welds. Hence the calculation accuracy in the vicinity of crack tips is ensured, and a better description of stress singularity with only one hybrid element surrounding one crack is provided. The numerical modeling for laser beam spot-welds subjected to three typical modes ofloadings including tension-lap, shear-lap and angle-clip can be greatly simplified with the applications of such elements. Three specimens under lap-shear, lap-tension and angle clip are devised and analyzed respectively, and main fracture parameters such as stress intensity factors and the initial direction of crack growth are obtained through tinite element analyses. The computed results ti'om numerical examples demonstrate the validity and versatility of the proposed modeling.

This paper employed a systematic analysis using a 2-D hybrid special finite element containing an edge crack in order to describe the fracture behavior of spot-welds in automotive structures. The 2-D hybrid special finite element is derived form a mixed formulation with a complex potential function with the description of the singularity of a stress field. The hybrid special finite element containing an edge crack can give a better description of its singularity with only one hybrid element surrounding one crack. The advantage of this special element is that it can greatly simplify the numerical modeling of the spot welds. Some numerical examples demonstrate the validity and versatility of the present analysis method. The lap-shear, lap-tension and angle-clip specimens are analyzed and some useful fracture parameters such as the stress intensity factor and the initial direction of crack growth are obtained simultaneously.

Precision edge feature extraction is a very important step in vision, Researchers mainly use step edges to model an edge at subpixel level. In this paper we describe a new technique for two dimensional edge feature extraction to subpixel accuracy using a general edge model. Using six basic edge types to model edges, the edge parameters at subpixel level are extracted by fitting a model to the image signal using least-.squared error fitting technique.

In this manuscript, we investigate the importance that must be placed on the selection of standard compounds when undertaking studies to optimize the performance of 2-D-HPLC separations. A geometric approach to factor analysis and a measure of peak density across the separation space were applied to assess localized measures of component distributions within the 2-D separation plane. The results of this analysis of data showed that the measure of separation quality varied markedly, depending on the elution zone for which the test was undertaken. The study concluded that if standards cannot be obtained that adequately describe the entire sample matrix, the sample itself should be used, and also, the separation should be optimized for regions of interest, not necessarily the separation as a whole.

The aqueous extract of the edible green microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa is of interest because of its immunostimulatory activity. Some components in the extract have been identified previously, namely a unique type of arabinogalactan and a galactofuran. Further fractionation of this extract was accomplished by treating the aqueous solution of the fraction precipitated by addition of 1.5vol of 95% ethanol with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The residue obtained by concentration of the supernatant was fractionated further by anion-exchange chromatography and size-exclusion chromatography on Sephadex G-100. Two fractions from the latter column were retained, of which one was a starch-like alpha-(1-->4)-linked d-glucan with some alpha-(1-->6) branches, and the other contained a starch plus a mixture of beta-(1-->2)-d-glucans. ESI mass spectrometry was used to show that the mixture contained both cyclic and linear beta-(1-->2)-d-glucans in a cyclic:linear ratio of 64:36, based on intensities of mass spectral peaks. For the cyclic beta-(1-->2)-d-glucans, ring sizes ranged from 18 to 35 monosaccharides with the ring containing 21 glucose units (54% of the cyclic glucans) being greater than three times more abundant than the next most abundant component, the ring containing 22 glucose units (15%). No rings containing 20 glucose units were present. This is the first observation of cyclic beta-(1-->2)-d-glucans in algae, as far as we are aware. For the linear beta-(1-->2)-d-glucans, the component containing 20 glucoses was most abundant (35% of the linear glucans), while the component containing 21 glucose units was the next most abundant (17%). These relatively low-molecular-weight glucans had low immunostimulatory activity.

Reaction of CeCl3·7H2O with Na2(oda) (oda = O(CH2CO2)22— oxydiacetate) in a 2:3 ratio gives the neutral cerium(III) complex [Ce2(oda)3(H2O)3]·9H2O (1). Treatment of a 1:3 mixture of CeCl3·7H2O and H2oda in water with 4 molar equivalents of NaOH also gives 1 but, with a larger excess of NaOH, the tri-sodium salt Na3[Ce(oda)3]·9H2O (2) is isolated. Formation of a tri-ammonium analogue of 2 can be achieved by neutralisation of an aqueous solution of CeCl3·7H2O and H2(oda) in a 1:3 ratio by NH4OH, giving (NH4)3[Ce(oda)3]·7H2O (3). Use of the cerium(IV) reagent (NH4)2[Ce(NO3)6] with Na2(oda) results in reduction to cerium(III) under ambient conditions and isolation of 1. However, in the absence of light this reaction yields crystals of the novel cerium(IV) heterobimetallic [Ce(oda)3Na4(NO3)2] (4). Each of these complexes exhibit a 3-D network structure having a common nine-coordinate [Ce(oda)3]n— (n = 2 or 3) subunit, irrespective of the oxidation state of cerium. In 1, six [Ce(oda)3]3— anions are connected, through bridging bidentate carboxylates, to a second Ce3+ site further coordinated by three water molecules. In contrast, the ammonium salt 2, displays isolated [Ce(oda)3]3— anions, devoid of further carboxylate bonding, but enmeshed within a network of hydrogen-bonded NH4+ cations and water molecules. The remarkable structure of 4 consists of infinite 2-D sheets of [Na2(NO3)]+ pillared by [Ce(oda)3]2— units, the connectivity arising by multidentate nitrate and carboxylate bridging.

Background: The energy density (ED) of an entrée affects children's energy intake at a meal consumed ad libitum. However, the effects in children of changing the ED of meals over multiple days are unknown.

Objective:
We aimed to test the effect of reducing the ED of multiple meals on the ad libitum energy intake of preschool-age children over 2 d.

Design: In this crossover study, 3- to 5-y-old children (n = 10 boys, 16 girls) were served manipulated breakfasts, lunches, and afternoon snacks 2 d/wk for 2 wk. Foods and beverages served at these meals during 1 wk were lower in ED than were those served during the other week. ED reductions were achieved by decreasing fat and sugar and by increasing fruit and vegetables. Dinner and an evening snack were sent home with children, but these meals did not vary in ED. The same 2-d menu was served in both conditions.

Results:
Children consumed a consistent weight of foods and beverages over 2 d in both conditions, and therefore their energy consumption declined by 389 ± 72 kcal (14%) in the lower-ED condition, a significant decrease (P < 0.0001). Differences in energy intake were significant at breakfast on day 1, and they accumulated at manipulated meals over 2 d (P < 0.01). Intake of the nonmanipulated meals was similar between conditions.

Conclusions:
Children's energy intake is influenced by the ED of foods and beverages served over multiple days. These results strengthen the evidence that reducing the ED of the diet is an effective strategy for moderating children's energy intake.

The northward departure of 13 wader species was studied in the Baie d' Aouatif, Bane d'Arguin, Mauritania, in the springs of 1985, 1986 and 1988. Waders left the area in the late afternoon. Wind speed and direction were registered near ground level (all years) and at altitudes up to 5 km (in 1988). A total of 31 000 waders were observed heading northwards, with those species wintering locally in largest numbers being most common. The majority of wader species showed fairly short periods of departure and unimodal departure peaks. Redshank and Dunlin departed over extended periods. Average departure dates of species correlated positively with the estimated midpoints of ranges in breeding latitude (ca. 2 d per 0 latitude).  Since winds at ground level did not correlate with winds at higher altitudes, and since it is likely that the departing waders traveled at great heights, it was not surprising that there is no correlation between the average afternoon tail wind vector at ground level and the daily departure intensity. We suggest that the timing ofdeparture from the Bane d'Arguin is largely under internal, instead of under direct environmental, control.

Phytoplankton primary productivity of eleven irrigation reservoirs located in five river basins in Sri Lanka was determined on a single occasion together with light climate and nutrient concentrations. Although area-based gross primary productivity (1.43–11.65 g O2 m−2 d−1) falls within the range already established for tropical water bodies, net daily rate was negative in three water bodies. Light-saturated optimum rates were found in water bodies, with relatively high algal biomass, but photosynthetic efficiency or specific rates were higher in water bodies with low algal biomass, indicating nutrient limitation or physiological adaptation of phytoplankton. Concentrations of micronutrients and algal biomass in the reservoirs are largely altered by high flushing rate resulting from irrigation release. Underwater light climate and nutrient availability control the rate of photosynthesis and subsequent areabased primary production to a great extent. However, morpho-edephic index or euphotic algal biomass in the most productive stratum of the water column is not a good predictor of photosynthetic capacity or daily rate of primary production of these shallow tropical irrigation reservoirs.

Using two-dimensional sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D SDS-PAGE) of 32P-labeled cytosolic and membrane extracts, we identified a 21.5 kDa phosphoprotein with an isoelectric point of 6.0 in NFS-60 cells that was phosphorylated maximally at 15 min by treatment with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) but not with interlevkin-3 (IL-3) or colony-stimulating factor-1 (macrophage-colony stimulating factor (CSF-1 (M-CSF)). The phosphorylation of this protein, designated 21.5/6.0, was unaffected by a series of antiproliferative agents [32]. These findings suggested that the 21.5/6.0 phosphoprotein may be involved in specific G-CSF-mediated biological responses such as activation and/or differentiation. We sought to characterize this 21.5/6.0 by a novel combination of 2-D SDS-PAGE and hydroxyapatite (HTP)-chromatography. Amino acid sequence determination of 21.5/6.0 revealed it to share a high level of homology with copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD), indicating that a Cu/Zn-SOD is phosphorylated following treatment with G-CSF. This is the first report of the phosphorylation and possible involvement of Cu/Zn-SOD protein in granulocyte activation/differentiation events. In addition, Cu/Zn-SOD levels and activity were diminished by G-CSF but not IL-3 treatment. This new protocol combining 2-D SDS-PAGE and HTP-chromatography allows the characterization of low abundance phosphoproteins involved in the cellular responses to G-CSF and presumably to other cytokines/growth factors.

Isonitrogenous amounts of two protein sources differing in rumen degradation rate and in lipid composition were fed to sheep with or without a rapidly fermentable cereal grain. The effects on intake, carcass leanness, and muscle fatty acid (FA) composition were examined. Thirty-eight crossbred wether lambs (9 mo, 35 to 48 kg) were allocated by stratified randomization to six treatment groups: 1) basal diet of alfalfa hay:oat hay (20:80) ad libitum = basal; 2) basal + lupin (358 g DM/d) = lupin; 3) basal + fish meal (168 g DM/d) = fish meal; 4) basal + barley (358 g DM/d) = barley; 5) basal + barley + lupin (179 + 179 g DM/d) = barley/lupin; or 6) basal + barley + fish meal (179 + 84 g DM/d) = barley/ fish meal. Lambs were fed individually. Dietary treatments were imposed for 8 wk, and the supplements were offered at 2-d intervals. Daily feed intake and weekly BW of lambs were recorded. At the end of the feeding period lambs were slaughtered after an overnight fast. Hot carcass weight (HCW) and fat depth (GR; total fat and muscle tissue depth at 12th rib, 110 mm from midline) were recorded. At 24 h postmortem samples of longissimus thoracis (LT) and longissimus lumborum (LL) muscles were taken from chilled (4 deg C) carcasses for the assessment of FA composition and meat tenderness, respectively. Lambs fed lupin or fish meal with or without barley had heavier slaughter weights (P < 0.004) and HCW (P < 0.001) than lambs fed basal or barley when initial BW was included as a covariate. The lupin diet also resulted in heavier carcasses (P < 0.05) than the fish meal or barley/fish meal diets. With GR as an indicator, fish meal and barley/ fish meal diets produced leaner carcasses (P < 0.01) than lupin and barley/lupin lambs. Long-chain n-3 FA content [20:5n-3 (P < 0.001), 22:5n-3 (P < 0.003), and 22:6n-3 (P < 0.001)] in the LT muscle were substantially higher with the fish meal and barley/fish meal diets, whereas muscle total n-6 FA was increased (P < 0.003) by lupin and barley/lupin compared with all other diets. Thus, increased muscle long-chain n-3 FA content occurred without an increase in fatness measured as GR, whereas increased muscle n-6 FA content was associated with an increase in carcass fatness. Under these circumstances, a reduction in carcass fatness had no effect on meat tenderness measured as Warner-Bratzler shear force.
