The stepwise reaction of [2,6-Mes2C6H3In(OH)2]4 with carbon dioxide and ethylene glycol proceeded with the formation of (2,6-Mes2C6H3In)4(CO3)2(OH)4(H2O)2 (1) and (2,6-Mes2C6H3In)4(OCH2CH2O)2(OH)4 (2), respectively, and eventually produced (2,6-Mes2C6H3In)4(CO3)2(OCH2CH2OH)2(OH)2 (3). Attempts to liberate ethylene carbonate upon heating of 3 were unsuccessful.

The heterogeneous phase reaction of Ru(η2-RL)(PPh3)2(CO)Cl (1) with 2-mercaptopyrimidine(pymSH) and pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate(dipic) ligands afforded the complexes of the type Ru(PPh3)(CO)(pymS)2 (2) and Ru(PPh3)2(CO)(dipic) (3) in excellent yield respectively. The chelation of pymS/dipic is attended with the cleavage of Ru-O, Ru-Cl and Ru-C(aryl) bonds and the RL ligand is no longer coordinated with the metal center in the products. The spectral (UV-Vis, IR, 1H NMR) and electrochemical data of the complexes are included. In dichloromethane solution both 2 and 3 display one quasi-reversible RuIII/RuII cyclic voltammetric response with E1/2 in the range 1.15-1.50 V vs Ag/AgCl. Structure determinations of 2 and the solvate 3·CH3CN have revealed distorted octahedral RuCN2S2P coordination sphere for 2 and RuCNO2P2 coordination sphere for 3·CH3CN. For 2 the pairs (P, N), (S, S) and (C, N) define the three trans directions whereas for 3·CH3CN those pairs are (P, P), (C, N) and (O, O). The electronic structures and the absorption spectra of 2 and 3 are also scrutinized by the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) analysis.

The International Obesity Taskforce (IOTF) recommends using age- and gender-specific body mass index (BMI) cut-points for defining the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children. These are given in both 6- and 12-month age intervals. Since the BMI-for-age curves are nonlinear, a degree of bias will be introduced when age intervals are wide. We aimed to quantify this bias in prevalence estimates in 2178 Australian children aged 4-12 years using 12- versus 6-month age intervals. Using the 12-month interval, the prevalence of overweight and obesity was underestimated by 1.4% compared to the 6-month interval estimates; however, this was age-dependent. It overestimated prevalence for 4-year olds, but underestimated it for older ages by up to 2.6%. Overweight prevalence was generally affected more than obesity prevalence. The use of different age intervals for IOTF cut-points introduces a small but systematic bias in prevalence estimates of overweight and obesity.

'Torayca' T800H/3900-2 is the first material qualified on Boeing Material Specification (BMS 8-276) which utilizes the thermoplastic-particulate interlayer toughening technology. Two manufacturing processes, the autoclave process and the fast heating rated Quickstep™ process, were employed to cure this material. The Quickstep process is a unique composite production technology which utilizes the fast heat transfer rate of fluid to heat and cure polymer composite components. The manufacturing influence on the mode I delamination fracture toughness of laminates was investigated by performing double cantilever beam tests. The composite specimens fabricated by two processes exhibited dissimilar delamination resistance curves (R-curves) under mode I loading. The initial value of fracture toughness GIC-INIT was 564 J/m2 for the autoclave specimens and 527 J/m2 for the Quickstep specimens. However, the average propagation fracture toughness GIC-PROP was 783 J/m2 for the Quickstep specimens, which was 2.6 times of that for the autoclave specimens. The mechanism of fracture occurred during delamination was studied under scanning electron microscope (SEM). Three types of fracture were observed: the interlayer fracture, the interface fracture, and the intralaminar fracture. These three types of fracture played different roles in affecting the delamination resistance curves during the crack growth. More fiber bridging was found in the process of delamination for the Quickstep specimens. Better fiber/matrix adhesion was found in the Quickstep specimens by conducting indentation-debond tests.

Aim: The mitochondrial uncoupling protein-3 (UCP3) is able to lower the proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane, thereby uncoupling substrate oxidation from ATP production and dissipating energy as heat. What the effect of endurance training on UCP3 is, is still  controversial. Endurance-trained athletes are characterized by lower levels of UCP3, but longitudinal studies in rodents reported no effect of endurance training on muscular UCP3 levels. Here, we examined the effect of a 2-week training programme on skeletal muscle UCP3 protein content in untrained human subjects, and hypothesized that UCP3 will be reduced after the training programme. Methods: Nine untrained men [age: 23.3±3.2 years; BMI: 22.6±2.6 kg m-2; maximal power output (Wmax): 3.8±0.6 W kg-1 body weight] trained for 2 weeks. Before and at least 72 h after the training period, muscle biopsies were taken for determination of UCP3 protein content. Results: UCP3 protein content tended to be lower after the training programme [95±10 vs. 109±12 arbitrary units (AU), P= 0.08]. Cytochrome c content tended to increase with 33% in response to endurance training (52± 6 vs. 39± 6 AU, P = 0.08). The ratio UCP3 relative to cytochrome c tended to decrease significantly upon endurance training (2.0±0.4 vs. 3.2±0.6 AU, P = 0.01). Conclusion: A short-term (2-week) endurance training programme decreased UCP3 protein levels and significantly reduced the ratio of UCP3 to cytochrome c.

Swine are susceptible to infection by both avian and human influenza viruses, and this feature is thought to contribute to novel reassortant influenza viruses. In this study, the influenza virus reassortment rate in swine and human cells was determined. Coinfection of swine cells with 2009 pandemic H1N1 virus (huH1N1) and an endemic swine H1N2 (A/swine/Illinois/02860/09) virus (swH1N2) resulted in a 23% reassortment rate that was independent of α2,3- or α2,6-sialic acid distribution on the cells. The reassortants had altered pathogenic phenotypes linked to introduction of the swine virus PA and neuraminidase (NA) into huH1N1. In mice, the huH1N1 PA and NA mediated increased MIP-2 expression early postinfection, resulting in substantial pulmonary neutrophilia with enhanced lung pathology and disease. The findings support the notion that swine are a mixing vessel for influenza virus reassortants independent of sialic acid distribution. These results show the potential for continued reassortment of the 2009 pandemic H1N1 virus with endemic swine viruses and for reassortants to have increased pathogenicity linked to the swine virus NA and PA genes which are associated with increased pulmonary neutrophil trafficking that is related to MIP-2 expression. IMPORTANCE: Influenza A viruses can change rapidly via reassortment to create a novel virus, and reassortment can result in possible pandemics. Reassortments among subtypes from avian and human viruses led to the 1957 (H2N2 subtype) and 1968 (H3N2 subtype) human influenza pandemics. Recent analyses of circulating isolates have shown that multiple genes can be recombined from human, avian, and swine influenza viruses, leading to triple reassortants. Understanding the factors that can affect influenza A virus reassortment is needed for the establishment of disease intervention strategies that may reduce or preclude pandemics. The findings from this study show that swine cells provide a mixing vessel for influenza virus reassortment independent of differential sialic acid distribution. The findings also establish that circulating neuraminidase (NA) and PA genes could alter the pathogenic phenotype of the pandemic H1N1 virus, resulting in enhanced disease. The identification of such factors provides a framework for pandemic modeling and surveillance.
