Polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles were prepared by using microemulsion polymerization processes at 3 °C. Particle characterization was performed by using FTIR, elementary analysis, UV–vis spectra and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The size of the nanoparticles varied from about 50 to 100 to 100 to 200 nm with the change in concentration of surfactant from 0.8 to 0.44 M. Polypyrrole nanoparticles were dedoped by a 10% NaOH solution, followed by a redoping process using a nuclear fast red kernechtrot dye, which has a sulfonate group. Dedoping changed the optical absorption properties of the nanoparticles.

Consumption of some dietary fibres may benefit bowel health; however, the effect of Australian sweet lupin (Lupinus angustifolius) kernel fibre (LKFibre) is unknown. The present study examined the effect of a high-fibre diet containing LKFibre on bowel function and faecal putative risk factors for colon cancer compared to a control diet without LKFibre. Thirty-eight free-living, healthy men consumed an LKFibre and a control diet for 1 month each in a single-blind, randomized, crossover study. Depending on subject energy intake, the LKFibre diet was designed to provide 17–30 g/d fibre (in experimental foods) above that of the control diet. Bowel function self-perception, frequency of defecation, transit time, faecal output, pH and moisture, faecal levels of SCFA and ammonia, and faecal bacterial [ß]-glucuronidase activity were assessed. In comparison to the control diet, the LKFibre diet increased frequency of defecation by 0·13 events/d (P = 0·047), increased faecal output by 21 % (P = 0·020) and increased faecal moisture content by 1·6 % units (P = 0·027), whilst decreasing transit time by 17 % (P = 0·012) and decreasing faecal pH by 0·26 units (P < 0·001). Faecal butyrate concentration was increased by 16 % (P = 0·006), butyrate output was increased by 40 % (P = 0·002) and [ß]-glucuronidase activity was lowered by 1·4 µmol/h per g wet faeces compared to the control diet (P < 0·001). Addition of LKFibre to the diet incorporated into food products improved some markers of healthy bowel function and colon cancer risk in men.

Background and Purpose-: Little is known about any variations in resource use and costs of care between stroke subtypes, especially nonhospital costs. The purpose of this study was to describe the patterns of resource use and to estimate the first-year and lifetime costs for stroke subtypes.

Methods-: A cost-of-illness model was used to estimate the total first-year costs and lifetime costs of stroke subtypes for all strokes (subarachnoid hemorrhages excluded) that occurred in Australia during 1997. For each subtype, average cost per case during the first year and the present value of average cost per case over a lifetime were calculated. Resource use data obtained in the North East Melbourne Stroke Incidence Study (NEMESIS) were used.

Results-: The present value of total lifetime costs for all strokes was Aus $1.3 billion (US $985 million). Total lifetime costs were greatest for ischemic stroke (72%; Aus $936.8 million; US $709.7 million), followed by intracerebral hemorrhage (26%; Aus $334.5 million; US $253.4 million) and unclassified stroke (2%; Aus $30 million; US $22.7 million). The average cost per case during the first year was greatest for total anterior circulation infarction (Aus $28 266). Over a lifetime, the present value of average costs was greatest for intracerebral hemorrhage (Aus $73 542), followed by total anterior circulation infarction (Aus $53 020), partial anterior circulation infarction (Aus $50 692), posterior circulation infarction (Aus $37 270), lacunar infarction (Aus $34 470), and unclassified stroke (Aus $12 031).

Conclusions-: First-year and lifetime costs vary considerably between stroke subtypes. Variation in average length of total hospital stay is the main explanation for differences in first-year costs.

The risk of malnutrition is high among elderly population, yet few studies have measured indicators of nutritional status among Australian aged-care residents. To determine the relationship between nutritional status and bone density, hand grip strength, and the timed-up and go test, in a group of Australian aged-care residents. Anthropometric and biochemical analysis measured in subjects recruited to be part of a six month multivitamin supplementation study. One hundred and fifteen subjects participated (68% female). The mean (SD) age and body weight was 80.2(10.6) years, and 66.5(15.0) kg, respectively. Eleven percent were underweight (body mass index, BMI, <or =20.0 kg/m(2)), and 20% were obese BMI >or =30 kg/m(2)). Low serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25(OH)D, <or =50 nmol/L) concentrations were found among 79% of subjects. After adjustment for body weight, there was an association between serum 25(OH)D and bone density (heel ultrasound) (r=.204, p=.027). Low serum zinc <or =10.7 micromol/L) concentrations were found among 46% of subjects; this group had a slower timed up and go time compared with those with higher zinc concentrations (n=19, 44.6 +/- 5.6 seconds vs. n=27, 30.0 +/- 3.3 seconds, p=.020). There were no associations between nutritional markers and hand grip strength. In this group, more than (3/4) of subjects had low serum 25(OH)D, and 46% had low zinc concentrations. Serum 25(OH)D was associated a lower bone density and zinc with a slower walking time. This indicates that the elderly in long term residential care facilities are at high risk for poor nutritional status, potentially increasing morbidity and mortality.

The influence of low-strain deformation behavior on curl and springback in advanced high strength steels (AHSS) was assessed using a bend-under-tension test. The effect of yielding behavior on curl and springback was examined by heat-treating two dual-phase steels to induce yield point elongation, while keeping a relatively constant tensile strength and a constant sheet thickness. A dual-phase and TRIP steel with similar initial thickness and tensile strengths were also examined to investigate the effect of work-hardening on curl and springback. It is shown that while current understanding limits prediction of curl and springback in bending under tension using only the initial sheet thickness and tensile strength, both the yielding and work-hardening behavior can affect the results. Explanations for these effects are proposed in terms of the discontinuous yielding and flow stress in the materials.

In this paper, we examine the volatility of crude oil price using daily data for the period 1991–2006. Our main innovation is that we examine volatility in various sub-samples in order to judge the robustness of our results. Our main findings can be summarised as follows: (1) across the various sub-samples, there is inconsistent evidence of asymmetry and persistence of shocks; and (2) over the full sample period, evidence suggests that shocks have permanent effects, and asymmetric effects, on volatility. These findings imply that the behaviour of oil prices tends to change over short periods of time.

(1R,2S,5R)-Menthyldiphenylgermane and its enantiomer have been prepared in a few steps from germanium tetrachloride. The initial step in this sequence, namely the reaction between germanium tetrachloride and menthylmagnesium chloride, produces menthylgermanium trichloride, which is the exclusive product of this Grignard reaction, presumably due to the bulk of the menthyl group. When used at a low temperature (−78 °C) and in conjunction with Lewis acids, such as magnesium salts, these chiral germanes are capable of reducing ester functionalized radicals in high enantioselectivity, but in low-moderate yield. For example, (R)-naproxen ethyl ester was obtained in 15% yield and 99% ee by reaction in toluene of 2-bromonaproxen ethyl ester with (1R,2S,5R)-menthyldiphenylgermane in toluene at −78 °C in the presence of magnesium bromide. At 80 °C, (1R,2S,5R)-menthyldiphenylgermane reacted with primary alkyl radicals with a rate constant of 1.02 × 106 M−1 s−1. Kinetic studies reveal the Arrhenius expression for this reaction to be: log(k/M−1 s−1) = (11.1 ± 0.4) − (34.6 ± 3.1)/θ where θ=2.3RT kJ mol−1.

Tor tambroides and T. douronensis, locally referred to as empurau and semah, respectively, are high valued mahseer species, indigenous to Sarawak, East Malaysia, with an aquaculture potential and of conservational value. Direct sequencing of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) 16S rRNA gene region (542 bp) was used to investigate genetic variation of T. tambroides and T. douronensis broodstock collected from different geographic locations in Sarawak and maintained at the Indigenous Fish Research and Production Center (IFRPC), Tarat, Sarawak, Malaysia. A total of 11 unique haplotypes were identified, of which six were detected in T. tambroides, and five in T. douronensis. Overall, nucleotide diversity (π) was low, ranging from 0.000 to 0.006, and haplotype diversity (h) ranged from 0.000 to 0.599. Although the analysis failed to detect genetic variation amongst populations of T. tambroides (significant pairwise FST was found for only one test, but pairwise haplotype frequencies were not statistically significant), substantial inter-population divergence among T. douronensis was recognised, especially those originating from different river systems (pairwise FST = 0.754 to 1.000, P < 0.05). Fixed haplotype differences were found in one population of T. douronensis. Average nucleotide divergence between T. tambroides and T. douronensis was 0.018, similar to the amount recognised between T. tambroides and the outgroup T. khudree (0.017). In addition, phylogenetic analysis revealed that the T. douronensis mtDNA consisted of two highly divergent clusters (0.020), one of which is more closely related to T. tambroides rather than with the other group of haplotypes of the conspecifics. The findings from the present study have important implications for aquaculture, management and conservation of these two species. The data also raise some concerns regarding the taxonomic status of T. douronensis, which needs to be addressed.

Diarrhea is a common dose-limiting toxicity associated with cancer chemotherapy, in particular for drugs such as irinotecan (CPT-11), 5-fluouracil, oxaliplatin, capecitabine and raltitrexed. St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum, SJW) has anti-inflammatory activity, and our preliminary study in the rat and a pilot study in cancer patients found that treatment of SJW alleviated irinotecan-induced diarrhea. In the present study, we investigated whether SJW modulated various pro-inflammatory cytokines including interleukins (IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6), interferon (IFN-γ) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and intestinal epithelium apoptosis in rats. The rats were treated with irinotecan at 60 mg/kg for 4 days in combination with oral SJW or SJW-free control vehicle at 400 mg/kg for 8 days. Diarrhea, tissue damage, body weight loss, various cytokines including IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6, IFN-γ and TNF-α and intestinal epithelial apoptosis were monitored over 11 days. Our studies demonstrated that combined SJW markedly reduced CPT-11-induced diarrhea and intestinal lesions. The production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IFN-γ and TNF-α was significantly up-regulated in intestine. In the mean time, combined SJW significantly suppressed the intestinal epithelial apoptosis induced by CPT-11 over days 5–11. In particular, combination of SJW significantly inhibited the expression of TNF-α mRNA in the intestine over days 5–11. In conclusion, inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines and intestinal epithelium apoptosis partly explained the protective effect of SJW against the intestinal toxicities induced by irinotecan. Further studies are warranted to explore the potential for STW as an agent in combination with chemotherapeutic drugs to lower their dose-limiting toxicities.

Background
Intervention of the biliary system is frequently done in patients with obstructive jaundice and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The pathogenesis is unknown.
Materials and methods
A rat model of bile duct ligation (BDL) for 2 weeks was established in which biliary intervention was feasible by injection of normal saline through an indwelling catheter in the bile ducts. Plasma levels of C-C chemokine MCP-1 and C-X-C chemokine MIP-2 were measured by using ELISA. Blood monocytes, Kupffer cells, and neutrophils in the liver were characterized with antibodies to ED1, ED2, and myeloperoxidase (MPO). Lipid peroxidation was measured by malondialdehyde contents and apoptosis by TUNEL stain of the liver.
Results
Biliary intervention resulted in an increase of plasma MCP-1 and MIP-2 proteins by 1 h, which declined to normal level by 3 h in both sham and BDL rats. The levels in BDL rats were significantly higher than in sham at most points. There was a transient increase of ED1- and ED2-positive cells and MPO-staining cells in sham rat liver by 1 h after intervention. ED2-positive cells increased significantly by 1 h, while ED1- and MPO-positive cells decreased, yet insignificantly after intervention in BDL rats. The cell counts in BDL were constantly higher than in sham. Malondialdehyde increased precipitously in BDL by 3 h and was significantly higher than in sham throughout the study period. Parenchymal liver injury, manifested by elevated ALT, as well as apoptosis and necrosis of liver cells, was significantly increased in BDL rats, but not in sham rats.
Conclusion
Biliary intervention augments chemokine expression, precipitates lipid peroxidation, and aggravates liver injury in cholestatic rats.

When growing one-dimensional (1D) nanomaterials via the vapour–liquid–solid (VLS) model, the substrates usually need to be coated with a layer of catalyst film. In this study, however, an effective approach for the synthesis of boron nitride (BN) nanowires directly onto commercial stainless-steel foils has been demonstrated. Growth occurs by heating boron and zinc oxide (ZnO) powders at 1100 °C under a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen gas flow (200 ml min−1). The stainless-steel foils played an additional role of catalyst besides substrate during the VLS growth of these BN nanowires. The as-synthesized nanowires emit strong photoluminescence (PL) bands at 515, 535 and 728 nm. In addition, we found that the gas flow rate and the hydrogen content in the gas mixture strongly affected the diameter and yield of the nanowires by changing the relative concentration of the nanowire growth species in the chamber.

This work investigates the relationship between the strain rate and the ductility and the underlying deformation mechanisms in an ultrafine-grained Al6082 alloy. At room temperature the uniform elongation of the material exhibits a marked increase with decreasing strain rate. This effect is related to the activation of micro shear banding, which is controlled by grain boundary sliding. The contribution of these mechanisms to uniform elongation is estimated. It is proposed that the grain boundary sliding suppresses the transformation of micro shear bands into macro shear bands. The activity of other deformation mechanisms during plastic deformation of the ultrafine-grained material is also discussed.

Loneliness and the need to belong are two subjective states that, on the basis of prior research and theory, would appear to be related both to one another and to wellbeing. This study explored these relationships with a sample of 436 volunteer participants drawn from the Australian Unity Wellbeing database. Participants completed a survey that included a measure of satisfaction with personal relationships embedded in the Personal Wellbeing Index, the UCLA Loneliness scale, a measure of life satisfaction, and the Need to Belong Scale. While loneliness was weakly related to need to belong, it was strongly associated with the discrepancy between need to belong and satisfaction with personal relationships, which we used to measure unmet need for belonging. People living alone reported a lower need to belong and less satisfaction with personal relationships than those living with others. However, the discrepancy scores, life satisfaction scores and loneliness scores did not differ between these groups. Loneliness mediated the relationship between unmet need for belonging and wellbeing (life satisfaction). These findings support Baumeister and Leary’s “belongingness hypothesis” and clarify the relationship between these variables.

Impaired glucose uptake is associated with both cardiac hypertrophy and contractile dysfunction, but whether there are common underlying  mechanisms linking these conditions is yet to be determined. Using a ‘gene dose’ Cre-Lox GLUT4-deficient murine model, we examined the effect of suppressed glucose availability on global myocardial gene expression and glycolysis substrate bypass on the function of isolated perfused hearts. Performance of hearts from 22- to 60-week-old male GLUT4 knockout (KO, > 95% reduction in GLUT4), GLUT4 knockdown (KD, 85% reduction in cardiac GLUT4) and C57Bl/6 wild-type (WT) controls was measured ex vivo in Langendorff mode perfusion. DNA microarray was used to profile mRNA expression differences between GLUT4-KO and GLUT4-KD hearts. At 22 weeks, GLUT4-KO hearts exhibited cardiac hypertrophy and impaired contractile function ex vivo, characterized by a 40% decrease in developed pressure. At 60 weeks, dysfunction was accentuated in GLUT4-KO hearts and evident in GLUT4-KD hearts. Exogenous pyruvate (5 mM) restored systolic pressure to a level equivalent to WT (GLUT4-KO, 176.8 ± 13.2 mmHg vs. WT, 146.4 ± 9.56 mmHg) in 22-week-old GLUT4-KO hearts but not in 60-week-old GLUT4-KO hearts. In GLUT4-KO, DNA microarray analysis detected downregulation of a number of genes centrally involved in mitochondrial oxidation and upregulation of other genes indicative of a shift to cytosolic β-oxidation of long chain fatty acids. A direct link between cardiomyocyte GLUT4 deficiency, hypertrophy and contractile dysfunction is demonstrated. These data provide mechanistic insight into the myocardial metabolic adaptations associated with short and long-term insulin resistance and indicate a window of opportunity for substrate intervention and functional ‘rescue’.

Objective
We examined the effect of a 14-month progressive resistance training (PRT) program on endothelial function in both a supervised training (Center) group and non-supervised training (Home) group of patients with type 2 diabetes. We studied 28 men and women with type 2 diabetes who participated in a 14-month PRT involving an initial 2-month supervised program and a 12-month maintenance program.

Methods
Endothelial function testing was performed through laser doppler flow responses in the skin microcirculation to iontophoresis of acetylcholine (ACh) and sodium nitroprusside (NaNP) and doses of 4, 8 and 16 mC were used. Measurements of vascular response (VR), HbA1c, weight and blood pressure were performed at 0, 2 and 14 months.

Results
VR to ACh and NaNP was significantly increased at 14 months compared with baseline in both the Center and Home groups. However, no between-group differences were observed. A significant correlation was observed between HbA1c and VR to ACh at baseline and 8 weeks using 8 mC dose of ACh. There was a strong correlation between HbA1c at baseline and VR at 14 months using all three doses of ACh (4 mC:r = −0.546, p = 0.003, 8 mC:r = −0.470, p = 0.002, 16 mC:r = −0.547, p = 0.006).

Conclusions/interpretation
Endothelial function is improved following 14 months of PRT in type 2 diabetes both in a supervised and non-supervised program. Strong correlations with HbA1c including initial HbA1c levels suggest that glycemic control may be an important factor in long-term regulation of endothelial function.
