In 2008, vegetable growers observed stunted lettuce plants showing signs of chlorosis and wilting. It was suspected that monochloramine in the recycled water used for irrigation, in combination with extreme environmental conditions (high irrigation water salinity and extreme heat), was responsible for these crop failures. A series of glasshouse studies was conducted to evaluate the impact of monochloramine concentration alone on iceberg lettuce seedlings, as well as in combination with high salinity and hot ambient temperatures. Monochloramine concentrations up to 9 and 15 mg L−1 Cl2 for continuous and initial irrigation only, respectively, did not affect the weight of iceberg lettuce heads (p > 0.05), while the combination of monochloramine (4–5 mg L−1 Cl2) and salinity (3,500 μS cm−1) did not significantly affect harvest measurements (p > 0.05). We therefore conclude that it is unlikely that monochloramine was responsible for the observed crop failures.

Youth violence is a significant public health issue in Thailand where most people who are injured are vocational college students. There is a need to identify methods whereby such violence can be prevented. We trialed a group program in a technical college in Thailand with 23 students who received a modified version of aggression replacement training. We then compared their results with those of 24 students who did not receive any intervention or preintervention at 1 and 3 month followups. Although we found little evidence supporting the effectiveness of the intervention, participants in the intervention group suggested in the followup in-depth interviews that they felt more able to avoid or ignore provocation, and that they thought more about the consequences of aggressive behavior than they did prior to the intervention.

Relatively little is known about the social distribution of total knee joint replacement (TKR) uptake in Australia. We examine associations between socioeconomic status (SES) and TKR performed for diagnosed osteoarthritis 2003-10 for all Australian males and females aged ≥30 yr.

Evidence from clinical practice and the extant literature suggests that post-operative pain assessment and treatment is often suboptimal. Poor pain management is likely to persist until pain management practices become consistent with guidelines developed from the best available scientific evidence. This work will address the priority in healthcare of improving the quality of pain management by standardising evidence-based care processes through the incorporation of an algorithm derived from best evidence into clinical practice. In this paper, the methodology for the creation and implementation of such an algorithm that will focus, in the first instance, on patients who have undergone total hip or knee replacement is described.

Psychiatric illness, mostly mania and psychosis, are reported to occur after rapid normalization of thyroid function in patients with primary hypothyroidism. It is generally believed that the gradual restoration of thyroid function may reduce the risk of psychiatric complications. This case report describes the occurrence of acute delirium in a 67-year-old man with primary hypothyroidism shortly after the initiation of thyroid hormone replacement. The use of low-dose thyroxine initially and persistent severe biochemical hypothyroidism on presentation with psychiatric symptoms illustrate that psychiatric illness can still occur despite unaggressive thyroid hormone replacement. A temporal relationship with the initiation of thyroxine and rapid recovery of mental state over 1 to 2 weeks differentiate this condition from hypothyroidism-related psychopathology, which tends to have a more prolonged course.

This paper introduces a novel method for gene selection based on a modification of analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The modified AHP (MAHP) is able to deal with quantitative factors that are statistics of five individual gene ranking methods: two-sample t-test, entropy test, receiver operating characteristic curve, Wilcoxon test, and signal to noise ratio. The most prominent discriminant genes serve as inputs to a range of classifiers including linear discriminant analysis, k-nearest neighbors, probabilistic neural network, support vector machine, and multilayer perceptron. Gene subsets selected by MAHP are compared with those of four competing approaches: information gain, symmetrical uncertainty, Bhattacharyya distance and ReliefF. Four benchmark microarray datasets: diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, leukemia cancer, prostate and colon are utilized for experiments. As the number of samples in microarray data datasets are limited, the leave one out cross validation strategy is applied rather than the traditional cross validation. Experimental results demonstrate the significant dominance of the proposed MAHP against the competing methods in terms of both accuracy and stability. With a benefit of inexpensive computational cost, MAHP is useful for cancer diagnosis using DNA gene expression profiles in the real clinical practice.
