This paper is an attempt to make sense of the literature about how new university students develop an understanding of those university processes that are essential to their academic success. Whereas traditionally there has been a tendency to regard students as deficient if they had transition difficulties, such an approach fails to recognise the complexity of the process and the role of the habitus, as explored by Bourdieu (1993), in rendering this task even more difficult for some students. The literature highlights the need for further research. We suggest the need to do so with regard to the complexity of students' experiences and the need to better appreciate the role of emotional or affective influences to that end. We also suggest that Bourdieu's concepts, especially those concerning habitus, would provide a sound foundation for the suggested research.

In this paper, the effect of various aging environments on the painted surface finish of unidirectional carbon fibre composite laminates, manufactured by autoclave and a novel out-of-autoclave technique was investigated. Laminates were exposed to water immersion, 95 % relative humidity and cyclic environments for 552 h and the surface finish was evaluated using visual and wave-scan distinctness of image (DOI) techniques. It was found that the laminate surface finish was dependent on the amount of moisture in the aging test. Minor surface waviness occurred on the laminates exposed to the cyclic test, whereas, surface waviness, print through and DOI values were all significantly higher as the laminates absorbed larger quantities of moisture from the hygrothermal and hydrothermal tests. The water immersion test, which was the most detrimental to the surface finish of the painted laminates, produced dense blistering on the autoclave manufactured laminate surface whereas the out-of-autoclave laminate surface produced only a few. It was found that the out-of-autoclave laminate had high substrate surface roughness which resulted in improved paint adhesion and, therefore, prevented the formation of surface blistering with aging. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Synthetic graphite–phenolic nanocomposites were designed and synthesized with a compositional gradient which is shown to influence transient temperature fields during rapid temperature changes. Such nanocomposites were fabricated using a compression moulding technique, and thermal conductivity and heat capacity of nanocomposites were experimentally determined using a modified transient plane source technique over a wide temperature range from 253.15 to 373.15 K. The effects of four compositional gradient configurations on the transient temperature field across the thickness of a nanocomposite plate, at a high imposed temperature, was investigated. The transient time and temperature fields in nanocomposite structures were highly affected by the compositional gradient configurations.

In this article, the effect of hygrothermal aging on the painted surface finish of unidirectional and fabric carbon fibre composite laminates, with and without surfacing film was investigated. The results highlighted the importance of ensuring that the composite surface directly beneath the paint layer is made from a uniform material with a consistent thickness in order to minimise surface defects from occurring during aging. The surfacing film was found to minimise the print through development on the painted unidirectional and twill composite surfaces. However, the surfacing film layer was found to intermingle with the carbon fibre plies during cure, which resulted in an uneven film thickness that caused increased levels of orange peel. The twill laminate painted surface produced high levels of print through and surface waviness that was caused by the large resin rich regions located within the tow intersections at the surface which enlarged due to thermal expansion and swelling of the matrix with hygrothermal aging. It was also noted that the small resin rich regions between the individual carbon fibres on the unidirectional composite surface were sufficiently large to print through the painted surface.

Despite considerable research on personality and "hedonic" or subjective well-being, parallel research on "eudaimonic" or psychological well-being is scarce. The current study investigated the relationship between the Big Five traits and subjective and psychological well-being among 211 men and women. Results indicated that the relationship between personality factors and psychological well-being was stronger than the relationship between personality factors and subjective well-being. Extraversion, neuroticism, and conscientiousness correlated similarly with both subjective and psychological well-being, suggesting that these traits represent personality predispositions for general well-being. However, the personality correlates of the dimensions within each broad well-being type varied, suggesting that the relationship between personality and well-being is best modeled in terms of associations between specific traits and well-being dimensions.

Acquired brain injury (ABI) is a debilitating condition often requiring extensive rehabilitation. Although cognitive rehabilitation is concerned with overcoming a skills deficit, the application of skill acquisition research in this context has been non-existent. Examining post-injury learning in terms of the qualitative variables associated with different phases of skill acquisition is likely to be beneficial in assessing patient status and monitoring progress, as well as identifying changing needs over the course of learning. However, current models of skill acquisition overlook the potential impact of variables such as emotion, implicit learning, metacognition, motivation, and strategies that can be leveraged to improve skill acquisition. The current paper attempts to lay the groundwork for modelling and improving skill acquisition in ABI.

Models of skill acquisition, such as Ackerman's (1988) theory of skill acquisition, largely ignore the experiences and dynamic internal processes of a person while learning a skill (e.g., how they feel, what strategies they are using, the role of the external environment). Riding and Powell (1993) suggested that the information-processing model (a common conceptualisation of learning and thinking) is an inadequate model to explain the complexities of human brain functions. These models are largely holistic, and do not provide detail about the qualitative aspects of a person's learning experience. This paper attempts to highlight the importance of a dynamic description of skill acquisition and to “unpack” the skill acquisition stages, with a focus given to process rather than performance or outcome. Learning more about what is going on “inside people's heads” whilst learning a skill, and what feelings or affective states are present, can inform both skill acquisition theory and various practical issues, such as why some training programs fail and some succeed. The role of emotions, motivation, environment, and other factors; the concepts of skill and ability; and various theories of skill acquisition are discussed. This highlights missing elements in the typical cognitive experimental focus. The concept of process itself is explored, with a focus on learning in general. Process-oriented factors such as motivation, memory, interruptions, emotion, and metacognition are investigated in relation to skilled performance. Areas for future research and some practical implications for training are outlined.

In this study the optimization design, fabrication and characterization of synthetic graphite/phenolic nanocomposites are performed. The composition of synthetic graphite/phenolic nanocomposites was controlled across the thickness by stacking eight homogeneous layers containing 0, 5, 10, and 20wt% synthetic graphite in different sequences. Four compositional gradient patterns, as well as a homogenous nanocomposite, with the same geometry and synthetic graphite content, were fabricated to investigate the optimized design for thermomechanical properties. Results show that nanocomposites with a high concentration of synthetic graphite on the surfaces and neat resin at the center have the best thermomechanical and viscoelastic properties.
