A growing number of students around the world are engaged in cross-border study mobility. Their academic, intercultural and personal development is a major concern and responsibility of not only the students themselves and their families but also the host institutions and other actors involved in the education of this cohort. This chapter addresses the pressing need to capitalise on international students’ dual strengths of diverse knowledge and transformative capacity as a meaningful and valuable approach to optimising their personal, intercultural and academic development. It also argues that international students’ learning should be conceptualised from a critical approach that considers how these diverse and intangible dimensions of the mobility landscape affect their learning experience rather than merely locating their learning in cultural, institutional or individual parameters.

Increasingly, Built Environment (BE) professionals, including planner, architect and landscape architect practitioners, are becoming involved in the planning and design of projects for, and in direct consultation with Indigenous communities and their proponents. These projects range from inserting Indigenous cultural landscape analysis into planning schemes, including Indigenous protocols and aspirations in policy statements; designing cultural centres, information centres and housing; drafting cultural tourism strategies and devising cross-cultural land management plans. This entails working with Indigenous communities or their nominated representatives as stakeholders in community engagement, consultation, and planning processes. Critically, BE professionals must be able to plan and design with regard to Indigenous community’s cultural protocols, issues and values. Yet many (domestic and or international) students graduate with little or no comprehension of Indigenous knowledge systems or the protocols for engagement with the communities in which they are required to work, whether they be Australian or international Indigenous communities. Contextually, both PIA and the planning academe have struggled with coming to terms with this realm over the last 10 years. This paper will report on a recently completed Australian Government Office of Learning & Teaching (OLT) funded research project that has sought to improve opportunities to improve the knowledge and skills of tertiary students in the BE professions through the enhancement of their competency, appreciation and respect for Indigenous protocols and processes that also implicates the professional accreditation systems that these courses are accountable. It has proposed strategies and processes to expose students in the BE professions to Australian Indigenous knowledge and cultural systems and the protocols for engaging with Indigenous Australians about their rights, interests, needs and aspirations. Included in these findings is the provision of a tool that enables and offers guidance to BE tertiary students and academics how to enhance comprehension, exposure to, and knowledge and cultural systems of, Indigenous Australians. While the scope of this report is cross-BE, this paper will focus upon the planning practice, policy and academe realms.

Many university programs in Australia undertaken by international students include a field experience (work placements, practicum, work-integrated learning, internships). This component of the program provides teaching and learning opportunities for international students to socialise into workplace settings often in unfamiliar cultural contexts. This presentation draws on data from an Australian Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) Innovation and Development grant Improving work placement for international students, their mentors and other stakeholders across six universities. An outcome of the project was a ‘model’ developed by the team. This will be discussed taking into account the relationship between the concepts of internationalisation, professional socialisation and reflection. Ideas and recommendations on how to improve international students’ experience during the placement will be shared.

This article reports on and discusses the findings of an investigationcarried out to explore the expectations of an English language enhancementcourse (ELEC) held by a group of undergraduate students at anAustralian university. For the study, a mixed-methods approach was utilised,with two instruments: a survey with a combination of closed- andopen-ended questions and semi-structured interviews. The research wasguided by the following three questions: (1) What do the students expectto learn on the course? (2) How are they developing their expectations?(3) Are the students’ expectations being met? The literature concerningstudent expectations foregrounds the complexity and multi-faceted natureof the concept, the satisfaction of which can impact on student engagement,satisfaction, performance, retention and attrition. Findings showthat the participants’ expectations of the course content and teachingstaff were largely met; nonetheless, a lack of class attendance was notedthroughout. Expectations were reported to have been developed largelythrough consultation with previous students of the course (43 per cent)and information materials provided by the university (42 per cent). Thearticle concludes with a discussion regarding the implications of thefindings for universities and education providers both in Australia andabroad.

National systems of vocational education and training around the globe are facing reform driven by quality, international mobility, and equity. Evidence suggests that there are qualitatively distinctive challenges in providing and sustaining workplace learning experiences to international students. However, despite growing conceptual and empirical work, there is little evidence of the experiences of these students undertaking workplace learning opportunities as part of vocational education courses. This paper draws on a four-year study funded by the Australian Research Council that involved 105 in depth interviews with international students undertaking work integrated learning placements as part of vocational education courses in Australia. The results indicate that international students can experience different forms of discrimination and deskilling, and that these were legitimised by students in relation to their understanding of themselves as being an ‘international student’ (with fewer rights). However, the results also demonstrated the ways in which international students exercised their agency towards navigating or even disrupting these circumstances, which often included developing their social and cultural capital. This study, therefore, calls for more proactively inclusive induction and support practices that promote reciprocal understandings and navigational capacities for all involved in the provision of work integrated learning. This, it is argued, would not only expand and enrich the learning opportunities for international students, their tutors, employers, and employees involved in the provision of workplace learning opportunities, but it could also be a catalyst to promote greater mutual appreciation of diversity in the workplace.

Purpose – This study examines Vietnamese international students’ experiences with thecampus learning environment by analysing differences in staff and student perceptions.Design/methodology/approach – Two focus groups (N = 12) and ten (10) in-depthinterviews were conducted with Vietnamese students and four (4) in-depth interviews withthe university staff (totalling 26).Findings – The findings show a greater divergence of views between students and staff onteaching and learning than English language proficiency and student support services.These key differences were influenced by students’ prior expectations of their learningenvironment.Research limitations/implications – This study is limited to one group of internationalstudents and to one Australian university.Practical implications – The academics and administrators must have a goodunderstanding of international students’ learning backgrounds and expectations to enhancetheir positive experience; Appropriate teaching skills and practices are essential foracademics to meet the current needs of students. More effective training for internationalstudents to understand the multicultural nature of Australia is also essential.Originality/value – This study contributes to the literature by identifying the experienceof Vietnamese international students in a western university, which is, a relatively underresearchednationality compared to other Asian nationalities such as Chinese and Indian.

In recent years governments have legitimated neoliberal educational policy reforms such as the internationalization and commercialization of education through mobilising the discourses of globalization and the knowledge economy. In Australia for instance, a raft of policy initiatives over the last two and a half decades (beginning in the early 1990s) targeted full-fee paying international students prompting a surge in international student enrolments and a burgeoning private vocational education and training (VET) sector for international students. Drawing on a study of situated realities influencing international students in private VET providers in Melbourne Australia, this chapter analyses, from training managers’ and quality assurance auditors’ perspectives, the impact of international student mobility on the private VET sector. The chapter also utilises the notion of social structure as systems of human relations amongst social positions to examine how international student mobility has led to shifts in VET manager and quality assurance auditors’ perceptions and practices outside the boundaries of the education sector, particularly how private VET providers and international students are represented. In this instance by reforming the VET sector, governments change conventional characteristics through which people relate and the relationships that bind them with intended and unintended consequences. The findings suggest that whilst VET policy posits an easy and ready association between the needs of capital and the development of the workforce, this association is highly contestable and problematic as it can lead to negative student learning outcomes.

The emergence of cross-cultural classrooms has been steadily increasing in Australian tertiary institutions, due to the growing population of international students enrolling to complete their degrees. This increase in international students has signified a change in the student demographics, thus recognizing the differences in students’ learning styles, and indicating that a more flexible approach is needed for learner content delivery. Research has suggested that students from different cultures have varying compatibility with different learning environments. With tertiary institutions now expanding towards the online forum for delivery of units, these compatibilities of students are even more evident. Hence, in order to ensure that all students are able to participate in this domain, preparations are needed to accommodate all cultural types. Therefore with the emphasis on creating flexible learning environments for all students the blended learning approach has been suggested as a solution.

This study examines the factors affecting student performance in an undergraduate financial accounting course, utilising Computer Assisted Learning (CAL). Multiple regression analysis on student performance shows that positive perceptions of the usefulness of CAL significantly influenced performance. It was also found that International students had significantly poorer performance than local students. This result may be attributed to transitional problems experienced by these students, given their different pathways to university study Prior studies of accounting and computing at secondary school level, together with gender, were not significant influences on performance. The results have implications for accounting educators utilising CAL in courses as a means of improving students understanding of accounting concepts and as a means of providing efficient and effective educational instruction to maximise learning outcomes in accounting.

This paper commences with themes discussed in two papers, “An
assessment strategy to help forestall plagiarism problems” (Kennedy,
2004) concerning how assessment strategies can be structured to
minimise plagiarism and “Paradigm shift: From traditional to on-line
education” (Gallie & Joubert, 2004) concerning the shifting focus
between teacher-centred and student-centred learning. The themes
raised are examined from the perspective of post-graduate course
delivery to predominantly international students within the context of
recognition of the specific needs of the student body. The themes are
then extended by considering the outcomes of a case study that
adapted methods of assessment with a view to improving outcomes
and reducing plagiarism and cheating.

There has been an increase in the number of international students studying information technology programmes in Australia. There is little information about how this group uses online technologies. The overall aim of this research was to investigate how students use online technologies and teaching resources. A secondary aim was to determine whether there were any differences between international and local students using the online environment. The study consisted of two parts: an online survey  questionnaire and an analysis of the student’s use of the online environment. The overall results showed very little difference between two cohorts and that these results would be enhanced by further research into educational and cultural backgrounds.

This paper will discuss the contributing factors of; increasing numbers of international students, and the advancement of learning technologies; that lead to the development of an exploratory research study into the creation of a three phase online lecture model. Aspects such as the differences between the major cultural groups currently enrolled in Australian Universities, indicates the variations that can be expected in student learning styles. This research study aims at determining the educational value of the inclusion of online lectures for a diverse and distributed cross-cultural audience.

This paper will discuss how blended learning has been used in cross-cultural classrooms as a means to improve the International students learning. Issues such as interaction and reuse of unit resources have been the focus of this research. This paper is about putting the theory of blended learning into practice with two teaching artifacts; an ice-breaker exercise and online lectures. Through the implementation of the two blended learning artifacts we are able to assess how the theory of blended learning really impact cross-cultural learning.

In recognition of the apparent paradox between the cultural-systems of Asia and the West and the teaching and learning styles they promote, this platform paper aims to propose how research might investigate differences between achievement and diverse learning preferences at various stages of the design process in the multi-cultural studios of Deakin University. The paper presents a Strategic Teaching and Learning Grant project currently running at Deakin as a reflexive research program aimed at resolving the learning difficulties of international students collaborating in three undergraduate design studios. The primary aim of this program is to inform a new culturally inclusive andragogy for problem-based design teaching through experiential
learning theory.
