Physiotherapy is a well established part of the rehabilitation of peripheral nerve paralysis. The aim of this type of treatment is to re-establish arbitrary functions by improving the patients’ active and passive mobility as well as their strength and stamina. IMF®-Therapy (Intention controlled Myo-Feedback) is an innovative method in the treatment of peripheral nerve lesions that goes beyond the purely neuro-scientific framework and also takes into account methods and concepts of the psychology of learning. The essential assumption is that things learnt in the past are firmly established in the long term motor memory and can be reactivated by the patient. From results achieved in 32 patients treated with this therapy it can be concluded that IMF®-Therapy may be a promising additional rehabilitation tool in peripheral nerve lesion.

Distal clavicle fracture associated with complete coracoclavicular ligament disruption represents an unstable injury, and osteosynthesis is recommended. This study was performed (1) to retrospectively analyse the clinico-radiological outcomes of two internal fixation techniques, and (2) to identify and analyse radiographic fracture patterns of fracture that are associated with this injury. Conclusions: Internal fixation of this fracture pattern is associated with a high union rate and favorable clinical outcomes with both techniques. A combination of distal radius plate and ligament reconstruction device resulted in stable fixation and significantly lower reoperation rates, and should be used when fracture geometry permits (Types 1 and 2).

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is rated as a leading cause of disability by the World Health Organization (1996). OCD is a heterogeneous and complex anxiety disorder characterized by the occurrence of repeated and distressing intrusive thoughts, and compulsive actions that are performed in order to lessen distress or prevent the negative outcome associated with the intrusions. Over the last several decades, cognitive behavioral treatments (CBT) of OCD have dramatically improved the prognosis for the disorder. However, a significant proportion of individuals presenting with OCD may still fail to benefit from treatment. In this paper, we present current CBT treatment models of OCD. We then propose several ways of enhancing CBT for OCD by targeting clients' attachment anxiety and dysfunctional self perceptions.

Previous research has suggested that individuals with OCD show compromised performance on tests assessing visuospatial and executive processes. This study aimed to further examine such findings by investigating the relationship between OCD symptom improvement following cognitive-behavioral therapy and changes in neuropsychological performance in individuals with OCD (n = 26), compared to test-retest control participants (n = 10). Successful treatment of OCD led to improvements relative to the control group on neuropsychological tasks measuring spatial working memory. Neuroscientific models of OCD consider such findings to be consistent with possible cortical dysfunction in OCD. However, a significant limitation of the study is in its inability to discount alternative explanations for this finding, such as the influence of changes in beliefs. Implications are discussed.

Objective  To evaluate the safety and efficacy of mitomycin C (MMC) in prevention of canine corneal scarring.

Methods  With an in vitro approach using healthy canine corneas, cultures of primary canine corneal fibroblasts or myofibroblasts were generated. Primary canine corneal fibroblasts were obtained by growing corneal buttons in minimal essential medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum. Canine corneal myofibroblasts were produced by growing cultures in serum-free medium containing transforming growth factor β1 (1 ng/mL). Trypan blue assay and phase-contrast microscopy were used to evaluate the toxicity of three doses of MMC (0.002%, 0.02% and 0.04%). Real-time PCR, immunoblot, and immunocytochemistry techniques were used to determine MMC efficacy to inhibit markers of canine corneal scarring.

Results  A single 2-min treatment of 0.02% or less MMC did not alter canine corneal fibroblast or keratocyte phenotype, viability, or growth. The 0.02% dose substantially reduced myofibroblast formation (up to 67%; P < 0.001), as measured by the change in RNA and protein expression of fibrosis biomarkers (α-smooth muscle actin and F-actin).

Conclusion 
This in vitro study suggests that a single 2-min 0.02% MMC treatment to the canine corneal keratocytes is safe and may be useful in decreasing canine corneal fibrous metaplasia. In vivo studies are warranted.

Improvement of the binding of polypyrrole with PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) thin film using low pressure plasma was studied. The effects of various plasma gases i.e., Ar, O2 and Ar + O2 gases on surface roughness, surface chemistry and hydrophilicity were noted. The topographical change of the PVDF film was observed by means of scanning electron microscopy and chemical changes by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, with adhesion of polypyrrole (PPy) by abrasion tests and sheet resistance measurements. Results showed that the increase in roughness and surface functionalization by oxygen functional groups contributed to improved adhesion and Ar + O2 plasma gave better adhesion.
