Corrosion protection by lanthanum hydroxy cinnamate (La(4OH-cin)3) in a polyurethane based varnish coating for mild steelhas been investigated. Filiform scribe tests, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) and potentiodynamic polarisation (PP)techniques have been powerful tools to better understand the corrosion process at defects and under the coating. Filiform scribetests showed that La(4OH-cin)3, as a pigment in a coating, inhibited the initiation and propagation of both delamination and filiformcorrosion (FFC) on coated steel. The PP experiments provided an insight into the fundamental mechanism of FFC. The resultssuggest that La(4OH-cin)3 behaves as a mixed inhibitor and stifles the initiation and propagation of FFC. In this paper, the theory ofdelamination leading to FFC and the likely mechanism of inhibition by the La(4OH-cin)3 will be discussed.

A preliminary study showed that the inhibitor lanthanum 4-hydroxy cinnamate ((La4OHcin)3) at a concentration of 400 ppm prevented the hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of SAE 4340 steel tensile specimens when tested under slow strain rate conditions in a 0.01M NaCl. In the presence of the inhibitor, a complex film formed on the surface of specimens during the slow strain rate test (SSRT), and no corrosion pits were detected. Electrochemical polarization studies indicated that the La(4OHcin)3 acted as an anodic inhibitor in the NaCl solution. This article also discusses the mechanism of HE inhibition by La(4OHcin)3.

Issue addressed: Worksites are a promising setting for health promotion initiatives. While there is an accumulated body of evidence indicating favourable health and cost outcomes, there have been difficulties identified in recruiting and influencing blue- collar workers. This descriptive study aimed to identify specific opportunities and barriers which may impact upon physical activity options at work for male blue-collar factory workers.

Methods: Fifteen manager interviews and worksite observations, and eight employee group discussions were conducted in manufacturing industry worksites.

Results: Several key barriers emerged which limit opportunities for blue-collar employees to participate in physical activity at work: time constraints; limited facilities; and lack of interest from management to facilitate physical activity due to limited resources and concerns about safety issues. Potential opportunities included the presence of change rooms, showers, outdoor areas suitable for physical activity, nearby parks and local fitness facilities, and occupational health and safety committees.

Conclusions: Increasing opportunities for workers to be active at work did not emerge as a priority of managers who may need to be convinced that allocating time and resources to physical activity is a wise investment and that workers need an environment that both supports and encourages participation in physical activity. The role of physical activity in relation to injury prevention and potential reductions in Workcover premiums is worthy of further investigation.

So what? While worksite physical activity promotion is a national health objective, there are numerous actual and perceived barriers to initiatives directed at factory workers. Rather than offering specific programs, it may be more productive to address work practices and environmental and regulatory barriers through established occupational health and safety channels. Information and education strategies to change the attitudes and beliefs of management and workers about these issues, as well as about the health benefits of physical activity, may also be helpful.

Aim: There is increasing concern regarding the use of cannabis among adolescents, especially given recent evidence highlighting its link with later mental disorders. Encouraging young people with mental health or drug issues to seek professional help is an important early intervention strategy; however, adolescents are typically reluctant to do so and instead turn to their peers for help. Peers may not have the skills or knowledge required to assist their friends to access professional help. This paper describes the development and evaluation of MAKINGtheLINK, a school-based health promotion programme that promotes help-seeking behaviour for mental health and cannabis use issues among young people.

Methods: The MAKINGtheLINK programme was piloted with 182 Year 10 students at a secondary school in Melbourne, Australia. Forty teachers received the MAKINGtheLINK staff professional development session.

Results: The delivery of the MAKINGtheLINK programme was found to be both acceptable and feasible within a school setting. Students and teachers described it as a fun, engaging, helpful and important programme. Students reported increased confidence and awareness of how to seek help for themselves or a friend, and teachers indicated increased confidence and awareness of how to assist students to seek help for cannabis use and/or mental health problems.

Conclusions: MAKINGtheLINK was successfully implemented within the school curriculum. We believe this is the first school-based programme that specifically focuses on facilitating professional help-seeking for cannabis use and mental health problems among young people, and demonstrates that utilizing peer models for help-seeking is a valuable resource for early intervention initiatives.
