In this paper a fuzzy linear regression (FLR) model integrated with a genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed. The proposed GA-FLR model is applied to modeling of a stereo vision system. A set of empirical data from stereo vision object measurement is collected based on the full factorial design technique. Three regression models, namely ordinary least-squares regression (OLS), FLR, and GA-FLR, are developed, and with their performances compared. The results show that the proposed GA-FLR model performs better than OLS and FLR in modeling of a stereo vision system.

In this paper, a boosted Fuzzy Min-Max Neural Network (FMM) is proposed. While FMM is a learning algorithm which is able to learn new classes and to refine existing classes incrementally, boosting is a general method for improving accuracy of any learning algorithm. In this work, AdaBoost is applied to improve the performance of FMM when its classification results deteriorate from a perfect score. Two benchmark databases are used to assess the applicability of boosted FMM, and the results are compared with those from other approaches. In addition, a medical diagnosis task is employed to assess the effectiveness of boosted FMM in a real application. All the experimental results consistently demonstrate that the performance of FMM can be considerably improved when boosting is deployed.

In traditional Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA), the Risk Priority Number (RPN) ranking system is used to evaluate the risk level of failures, to rank failures, and to prioritize actions. This approach is simple but it suffers from several weaknesses. In an attempt to overcome the weaknesses associated with the traditional RPN ranking system, several fuzzy inference techniques for RPN determination are investigated in this paper. A generic Fuzzy RPN approach is described, and its performance is evaluated using a case study relating to a semiconductor manufacturing process. In addition, enhancements for the fuzzy RPN approach are proposed by refining the weights of the fuzzy production rules.

Satellite image processing is a complex task that has received considerable attention from many researchers. In this paper, an interactive image query system for satellite imagery searching and retrieval is proposed. Like most image retrieval systems, extraction of image features is the most important step that has a great impact on the retrieval performance. Thus, a new technique that fuses color and texture features for segmentation is introduced. Applicability of the proposed technique is assessed using a database containing multispectral satellite imagery. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed segmentation technique is able to improve quality of the segmentation results as well as the retrieval performance.

In this study, an interactive Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system that allows searching and retrieving images from databases is designed and developed. Based on the fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm, the CBIR system fuses color and texture features in image segmentation. A technique to form compound queries based on the combined features of different images is devised. This technique allows users to have a better control on the search criteria, thus a higher retrieval performance can be achieved. A database consisting of skin cancer imagery is used to demonstrate the applicability of the CBIR system.

In this paper, an application of the motor current signature analysis (MCSA) method and the fuzzy min–max (FMM) neural network to detection and classification of induction motor faults is described. The finite element method is employed to generate simulated data pertaining to changes in the stator current signatures under different motor conditions. The MCSA method is then used to process the stator current signatures. Specifically, the power spectral density is employed to extract harmonics features for fault detection and classification with the FMM network. Various types of induction motor faults, which include stator winding faults and eccentricity problems, under different load conditions are experimented. The results are analyzed and compared with those from other methods. The outcomes indicate that the proposed technique is effective for fault detection and diagnosis of induction motors under different conditions.

In this paper, a robust learning control is developed for a class of single input single output (SISO) nonlinear systems with T-S fuzzy model. It is seen that the proposed sliding mode learning control with the powerful Lipshitz-like condition can guarantee the stability, convergence and robustness of the closed-loop system without involving any assumptions on uncertain system dynamics. In addition, theconcept that the local system with the maximum membership function dominates the system dynamic behaviours helps to greatly simplify the control system design. It will be further seen that the continuous learning control ensures the advantage of chattering-free that may occur in conventional sliding mode systems. Simulation examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed learning control through the comparison with the H-infinity control.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are used in health monitoring, tracking and security applications. Such networks transfer data from specific areas to a nominated destination. In the network, each sensor node acts as a routing element for other sensor nodes during the transmission of data. This can increase energy consumption of the sensor node. In this paper, we propose a routing protocol for improving network lifetime and performance. The proposed protocol uses type-2 fuzzy logic to minimize the effects of uncertainty produced by the environmental noise. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol performs better than a recently developed routing protocol in terms of extending network lifetime and saving energy and also reducing data packet lost.
