The ecology of five species of freshwater crayfish occurring in a variety of habitat types in the Grampians National Park was investigated. The study examined the numbers of each species living in the region, how they interact, when they reproduce, and what they eat. Management and conservation requirements were proposed.

The demography, reproduction and behaviour of the swamp antechinus, a small carnivorous marsupial, were compared in island and mainland populations. Divergent demography and behaviour occurred between populations, with island animals benefiting from increased productivity caused by nesting seabirds. However, evolutionary divergence in life-history and morphology, which occur in island rodent populations, were not recorded.

This research investigated links between the occurrence of endangered southern right whales and characteristics of their habitat. Habitat selection is based on physical environmental features, with important roles for social cues and site fidelity. This complex interaction of factors affects spatial recovery capacity and presents challenges for conservation management.

The flowering ecology of south-east Australian melliferous (honey) flora was studied, using observational data from our most experienced beekeepers. Short-term variation and long-term trends were observed which may have critical ecological implications. The study is a significant contribution to flowering ecology and provides an important foundation to guide future research.

This study investigated the nest site selection characteristics and diet of the Wedge-tailed Eagle, Aquila audax, in southern Victoria. It was found that sites where local topography afforded some protection from adverse weather and where the nest tree was live were most commonly selected. Rabbits were found to the major prey item of this eagle.

¯Large interannual variations in reproductive success caused by fluctuations in oceanography and prey availability are common to many species of air breathing epipelagic predators. In contrast, little is known about variation in benthic foragers such as Australian fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus). Between 1997 and 2007, pup production was assessed in 9 yr, while the timing of breeding and adult female condition was assessed in 5 yr at Kanowna Island in Bass Strait, southeastern Australia. Pup production was variable ( ¯x = 1,726 ± 42, range = 1,386–2,301), but without temporal trend, as was median birth date ( ¯x = 23 November±1, range = 21–25 November) and pupping synchrony (period of 90% births: ¯x = 28 ± 2 d, range = 23–31 d). Pup production was negatively correlated with median birth date and positively correlatedwith female condition,winter sea-surface temperature (SST) and zonal wind strength within Bass Strait. Pup production was also negatively correlated with SST in the previous summer within Bass Strait and in the eastern Great Australian Bight upwelling region. The results suggest that the reproductive success of Australian fur seals is influenced by oceanography but less so than in otariids foraging epipelagically in major upwellings. Despite spanning several El Niño events, no correlation between pup production and the Southern Oscillation Index was observed.

This thesis investigated the ecology of the threatened sooty owl, which was used to improve understanding of recent small mammal declines and how a top-order predator adapted to changes in ecosystem condition following European settlement. This knowledge will help improve biodiversity conservation and management of forested ecosystems in south-eastern Australia.

Australia’s temperate woodlands are environments of cultural and ecological importance and significant repositories of Australia’s biodiversity. Despite this, they have been heavily cleared, much remaining vegetation is in poor condition and many species of plants and animals are threatened. Here, we provide a brief overview of key issues relating to the ecology, management and policy directions for temperate woodlands, by identifying and discussing ten themes. When addressing issues relating to the conservation and management of temperate woodlands, spatial scale is very important, as are the needs for a temporal perspective and a complementary understanding of pattern and process. The extent of landscape change in many woodland environments means that woodland patches, linear networks and paddock trees are critical elements, and that there can be pervasive effects from ‘problem’ native species such as the Noisy Miner (Manorina melanocephala). These consequences of landscape change highlight the challenge to undertake active management and restoration as well as effective monitoring and long-term data collection. In developing approaches for conservation and management of temperate woodlands, it is essential to move our thinking beyond reserves to woodland conservation and management on private land, and recognise the criticality of cross-disciplinary linkages. We conclude by identifying some emerging issues in woodland conservation and management. These include the need to further develop non-traditional approaches to conservation particularly off-reserve management; the value of documenting approaches and programmes that demonstrably lead to effective change; new lessons that can be learned from intact examples of temperate woodlands; and the need to recognise how climate change and human population growth will interact with conservation and management of temperate woodlands in future decades
