In this paper, the fabrication and growth mechanism of net-shaped micropatterned self-organized thin-film TiO2 nanotube (TFTN) arrays on a silicon substrate are reported. Electrochemical anodization is used to grow the nanotubes from thin-film titanium sputtered on a silicon substrate with an average diameter of ?30 nm and a length of ?1.5 ?m using aqueous and organic-based types of electrolytes. The fabrication and growth mechanism of TFTN arrays from micropatterned three-dimensional isolated islands of sputtered titanium on a silicon substrate is demonstrated for the first time using focused-ion-beam (FIB) technique. This work demonstrates the use of the FIB technique as a simple, high-resolution, and maskless method for high-aspect-ratio etching for the creation of isolated islands and shows great promise toward the use of the proposed approach for the development of metal oxide nanostructured devices and their integration with micro- and nanosystems within silicon-based integrated-circuit devices.

This thesis examined the behavior of osteoblast cells in response to material surfaces. Cell behavior at the cellular and molecular level on Ti and two Ti alloys (TiZr and TiNb) in response to their material surface properties were evaluated at different stages of cell-material interactions namely adhesion, proliferation and differentiation.

An open-cell titanium foam with relative density of 0.2 was prepared by powder metallurgical process. The compressive mechanical properties of the foam at the different temperatures in the range of 20-600°C were measured and the temperature-dependence of its mechanical properties was discussed. The results indicate that the foam material exhibit fragile fracture characteristic at room temperature. When it is deformed over 200°C, the stress-strain curves exhibit plastic deformation characteristic, including three distinct regions: the linear elasticity region, the plastic collapse region, and the densification region. The Young's modulus, yield stress and elastic limit decrease with increasing of temperature. The temperature-dependence of these properties can be expressed as E*=1.5217 × 10 9-5.988 × 10 5T, σ cl*=85.7-0.095T, σ ys*=99.1-0.167V7.02 × 10 -5T 2 respectively.

The impact of regular additions of a surfactant (ethylene bis-stearamide; EBS) at different time intervals was investigated on the powder characteristics of a biomedical Ti-10Nb-3Mo alloy (wt.%). Ball milling was performed for 10 h on the elemental powders in four series of experiments at two rotation speeds (200 and 300 rpm). The addition of 2 wt.% total EBS at different time intervals during ball milling resulted in noticeable changes in particle size and morphology of the powders. The surfactant addition at shorter time intervals led to the formation of finer particles, a more homogenous powder distribution, a higher powder yield, and a lower contamination content in the final materials. Thermal analysis of the powders after ball milling suggested that differing decomposition rates of the surfactant were responsible for the measured powder particle changes and contamination contents. The results also indicated that the addition of surfactant during ball milling at 200 rpm caused a delay in the alloy formation, whereas ball milling at 300 rpm favored the formation of the titanium alloy.Crown Copyright © 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V. The contact load-bearing response and surface damage resistance of multilayered hierarchical structured (MHSed) titanium were determined and compared to monolithic nanostructured titanium. The MHS structure was formed by combining cryorolling with a subsequent Surface Mechanical Attrition Treatment (SMAT) producing a surface structure consisted of an outer amorphous layer containing nanocrystals, an inner nanostructured layer and finally an ultra-fine grained core. The combination of a hard outer layer, a gradual transition layer and a compliant core results in reduced indentation depth, but a deeper and more diffuse sub-surface plastic deformation zone, compared to the monolithic nanostructured Ti. The redistribution of surface loading between the successive layers in the MHS Ti resulted in the suppression of cracking, whereas the monolithic nanograined (NG) Ti exhibited sub-surface cracks at the boundary of the plastic strain field. Finite element models with discrete layers and mechanically graded layersrepresenting the MHS system confirmed the absence of cracking and revealed a 38% decrease in shear stress in the sub-surface plastic strain field, compared to the monolithic NG Ti. Further, the mechanical gradation achieves a more gradual stress distribution which mitigates the interface failure and increases the interfacial toughness, thus providing strong resistance to loading damage. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

In the current study, ultrafine equiaxed grains with a size of 150 to 800 nm were successfully produced in a Ti-6Al-4V alloy through thermomechanical processing of a martensitic starting microstructure. This was achieved through a novel mechanism of grain refinement consisting of several concurrent processes. This involves the development of substructure in the lath interiors at an early stage of deformation, which progressed into small high-angle segments with increasing strain. Consequently, the microstructure was gradually transformed to an equiaxed ultrafine grained structure, mostly surrounded by high-angle grain boundaries, through continuous dynamic recrystallization. Simultaneously, the supersaturated martensite was decomposed during deformation, leading to the progressive formation of beta phase, mainly nucleated on the intervariant lath boundaries.

The transformation texture was studied in a Ti-6Al-4V alloy for two microstructures produced through different phase transformation mechanisms (i.e. diffusional vs. displacive). Both microstructures revealed qualitatively similar crystallographic texture characteristics, having two main texture components with Euler angles of (90°, 90°, 0°) and (90°, 30°, 0°). However, the overall α texture strength was considerably weaker in the martensitic structure (i.e. displacive mechanism) compared with the α + β microstructure produced through slow cooling (i.e. diffusional mechanism). The intervariant boundary distribution in martensite mostly revealed five misorientations associated with the Burgers orientation relationship. The five-parameter boundary analysis also showed a very strong interface plane orientation texture, with interfaces terminated mostly on the prismatic planes {hki0}, when misorientation was ignored. The highest intervariant boundary populations belonged to the 63.26°/[10 553 ] and 60°/[112 0] misorientations, with length fractions of 0.38 and 0.3, respectively. The former was terminated on (41 3 0), and the latter was a symmetric tilt boundary, terminated on (1 011). The intervariant plane distribution in martensite was determined more by the constraints of the phase transformation than by the relative interface energies.

The flow curve behaviour and microstructure evolution of commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) through uniaxial hot compression was investigated at 850 °C and a strain rate of 0.1/s. Electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) was employed to characterize the microstructure and crystallographic texture development for different thermomechanical conditions. The stress-strain curves of CP-Ti alloy under hot compression displayed a typical flow behaviour of metals undergoing dynamic recrystallization (DRX), which resulted in grain refinement. The critical strain for the onset of DRX was 0.13 using the double differentiation analysis technique. It was also revealed that the texture was markably altered during hot deformation. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Titanium-strontia (Ti-SrO) metal matrix composites (MMCs) with 0, 1, 3 and 5% (weight ratio) of SrO have been fabricated through the powder metallurgy method. Increasing the weight ratio of SrO from 0 to 5%, the compressive strength of Ti-SrO MMCs increased from 982 MPa to 1753 MPa, while the ultimate strain decreased from 0.28 to 0.05. The elastic moduli of Ti-3SrO and Ti-5SrO MMCs were higher than those of Ti and Ti-1SrO MMC samples. Additionally, the micro hardness of Ti-SrO MMCs was enhanced from 59% to 190% with the addition of SrO. The enhanced compression strength and micro hardness of Ti-SrO MMCs were attributed to the Hall-Petch effect and the SrO dispersion strengthening in the Ti matrix. MTS assay results demonstrated that Ti-SrO MMCs with 3% SrO exhibited enhanced proliferation of osteoblast-like cells. Alkaline phosphatase activity of cells was not influenced significantly on the surface of Ti-SrO MMCs compared with pure Ti in a term longer than 10 days. The cell morphology on the Ti-SrO MMCs was observed using confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, which confirmed that the Ti-3%SrO MMCs showed optimal in vitro biocompatibility. The aim of this article is to investigate the drilling of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite/metal stack-ups to have a details picture of the developments in this complex area. The forces and torque, chip shape, surface finish and geometry, and tool material and tool wear for drilling composite/metal stack-ups have been analyzed in details in addition to drilling mechanism of CFRP. The relation between input and output parameters was discussed and the trend of input parameters for damage free and tight tolerance holes has been investigated based on the literature. The main findings are (i) heat, built-up edge and chips generated from drilling of metallic layers damages CFRP surface, (ii) order of material layers affects the drilling outcomes significantly, (iii) coatings and step-shape on the cutting tool improves the tool performance, (iv) tool materials should be selected based on the material of metallic layer, (v) chipping, adhesion, abrasion and attrition are main tool wear mechanisms during machining of CFRP/metal stacks and (vi) application of coolant improves the machinability.

Titanium alloys are of great demand in the aerospace and biomedical industries. Most the titanium products are either cast or sintered to required shape and finish machined to get the appropriate surface texture to meet the design requirements. Ti-6Al-4V is often referred as work horse among the titanium alloys due to its heavy use in the aerospace industry. This paper is an attempt to investigate and improve the machining performance of Ti-6Al-4V. Thin wall machining is an advance machining technique especially used in machining turbine blades which can be done both in a conventional way and using a special technique known as trochoidal milling. The experimental design consists of conducting trials using combination of cutting parameters such as cutting speed (vc), 90 and 120 m/min; feed/tooth (fz) of 0.25 and 0.35 mm/min; step over (ae) 0.3 and 0.2; at constant depth of cut (ap) 20mm and using coolant. A preliminary assessment of machinability of Ti-6Al-4V during thin wall machining using trochoidal milling is done. A correlation established using cutting force, surface texture and dimensional accuracy.
