The thesis findings revealed midlife adults see meaning in life as comprising life philosophy / value, and purpose / reason, which guide and direct, and help to make sense of and cope with life. These aspects of life meaning are relevant but add unique contributions to a more global sense of meaning in life. The clinical portfolio explores the role of play in psychotherapy with children. Four case studies illustrate various ways in which play can be incorporated into therapeutic practice according to the child client's circumstances.

Human mate selection across the lifespan

The lifespan mating preferences of men and women were examined to determine which of two theories of mate selection, evolutionary and social-role theory, could best explain the findings. Of the 785 respondents surveyed, the lifespan preferences of both men and women supported the evolutionary perspective of mate selection.

The processes through which Affect infuses judgements of subjective well-being

This thesis clarifies the processing routes through which Affect can influence global subjective well-being, and reveals that the strength of these processing routes is moderated by dispositional factors. This has important implications that furthers understanding in the field of subjective well-being. The portfolio focuses on the client characteristics that are indicated to be influential upon the effectiveness, and thus the suitability of cognitive behavioural therapy. Four case studies are presented which illustrate how the suitability of CBT can be influenced by client factors.

An investigation of the influences on children's active free-play

This research examined the influences on children's (6-12 years) active free-play. The findings suggest that there are a number of strategies that focus on individual, social and physical environmental factors that have the potential to be successful in creating opportunities for children to be physically active in their free-time.

Subjective Wellbeing as an affective construct

This thesis quantifies the normative characteristics of Subjective Wellbeing amongst Australian high-school age students using the Personal Wellbeing Index adapted for school children. No previous study has undertaken this task. The results confirm the homeostatic model and corroborate previous research suggesting that Subjective Wellbeing is a construct driven primarily by Core Affect.

On the relationship between dissociation and disordered eating

This thesis investigated the psychological processes that underlie the relationship between dissociation and disordered eating. Although previous theories have emphasized that dissociation undermines behavioural self-control and, in turn, contributes to disordered eating, present findings indicate that dissociation may also influence disordered eating via disturbances to one's sense of identity.

Adoption of VIDEOoverIP by deaf people in the workplace

This study explored deaf employees' adoption of videocommunication-via-the Internet, allowing sign language use between deaf people, and between deaf and hearing people via Video Relay Interpreting service. Major findings included a paradigm shift from text to video communication; and, a divergence from typical adoption theory, with government intervention required to prime the adoption of videocommunication by deaf people in Australia.

Assessment of movement participation for children with developmental coordination disorders

The Caregiver Assessment of Movement Participation was developed to identify children of 5-10 years old for movement participation difficulties in home contexts. Its psychometric properties were investigated including its usefulness as a screening instrument using both classical test theory methods and Rasch analysis. Results confirmed its validity and reliability.

Rhotekin 2, a novel GTPase effector involved in resistance to apoptosis

This thesis describes the discovery, characterization, and function of a new protein, Rhotekin 2. It is a signaling protein with a significant role in resistance to cell death in human lymphocytes and therefore may be a potential new target in future treatments of immune diseases such a HIV and leukemia.

Hope of education : Somali families and social connection

This thesis examines Somali parents' experience of their children's education after settling in Melbourne following the outbreak of civil war in Somalia in 1991. The research found that Somali parents instigate connections with teachers to generate social capital to enhance their children's education.

Changing spaces

Using Gidden's structuration theory to explore marginalised young people's perceptions of a six-week outdoor experiential program, this study uncovers the processes involved in increasing the agency and control the young people have over their future health and wellbeing to enable them to make significant changes in their life styles.

Metabolically important secreted proteins in Psammomys obesus

A new adipokine, chemerin, was identified and its expression in P. obesus and in humans suggests that it is an important contributor to the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Polymorphisms within the CHEMERIN gene further support its involvement in obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Readiness for substance abuse treatment amongst Victorian prisoners

The thesis examined treatment readiness in offender rehabilitation. Findings empirically refuted the notion that treatment readiness occurs in sequential progression through stages. Instead the study offered two treatment readiness models based on concurrent states of thought and behaviour. Furthermore, the treatment readiness models were found to be significantly predicted by offenders' cognitive styles and self-efficacy. The portfolio seeks to demonstrate, through four case studies, how different variables within the three-part ecological framework can either promote or constrain the reintegration process of ex-prisoners and ex-offenders.

AHI1 and NDRG2 function in skeletal muscle and the development of type 2 diabetes

In this study, AHI1 and NDRG2 gene function in the insulin signalling pathways regulating skeletal muscle homeostasis was investigated. Findings implicate AHI1 in the regulation of insulin-stimulated glucose transport and the development of insulin resistance, whilst associating NDRG2 with the regulation of myoblast proliferation and differentiation; possible via interactions with PICK1 and arfaptin2.

Quality in disability service - whose indicators?

The study identified indicators of disability service quality used by three stakeholder groups (service users, providers and managers) in order to develop an explanatory schema regarding stakeholders' perceptions of quality and its indicators. The different perspectives were identified and the emerging quality indicator framework had a complex socio-ecological basis.
