 Strip casting is a rapid, environment friendly technology for manufacturing thin sheets of steel directly from molten metal. Research presented in this thesis examines the effect of atomic location, cluster size and composition on internal microstructure development during strip casting. Current research potentially leads to green manufacturing of steel.

In this study, a series of Ti-xNb-yMo (x = 5-40 wt.% in 5 wt.% increments; and y = 3, 5, 10 wt%) alloys were fabricated by powder metallurgy and studied with respect to their microstructures, compressive mechanical properties and hardness. Increases in Nb and Mo content led to decreases in compressive and yield strengths, elastic modulus and hardness of the sintered alloys. Among the studied alloys, Ti-10Nb-3Mo alloy exhibited the optimum combination of strength and ductility. Alloys with a lower amount of Nb (≤ 25 wt.%) and Mo (≤ 5 wt.%) developed Widmanstätten structure, while further increase in Nb and Mo additions led to the microstructure predominantly consisting of β phase with varying regions of α + β phase. The effects of sintering temperature on elastic modulus and hardness were also investigated for Ti-xNb-3Mo alloys.

This paper presents a study on the evolution of strength and alteration microstructure of alkali-activated slag (AAS) pastes exposed to 50°C. Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) was used as thestarting material to prepare slags pastes which were then activated with a range of activators. The preliminary results from the study of these pastes are presented. It was found that all the pastes show a significantlystrength loss after exposure to 50°C for 24 hours. This is independent on the activators used. The paste samples were further examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM) and sorptivity tests. A hypothesis for strength loss is proposed based on the observations in change of microstructure. This hypothesis will be further validated by the study of the AAS pastesprepared by using phosphorus slags.

The nonlinear unloading behavior of three different commercial dual-phase steels (DP780 grade equivalent) was examined. These steels exhibited small variations in chemical composition (0.07 to 0.10 mass percent carbon) and martensite volume fraction (0.23 to 0.28), and they demonstrated similar hardening behavior. Uniaxial loading-unloading-loading tests were conducted at room temperature and quasi-static strain rates between engineering strains of 0.5 and 8%. Steel microstructures were examined using electron backscatter diffraction and nanoindentation techniques. The microplastic component of the unloading strain exhibited no dependence on the martensite volume fraction or the ferrite grain size within the small range encountered in this investigations. Instead, the magnitude of the microplastic component of the unloading strain increased as the strength ratio between the martensite and ferrite phases increased. Correspondingly, the apparent unloading modulus, or chord modulus, exhibited a greater reduction for equivalent increments of strain hardening as the strength ratio increased. These results suggest that springback can be reduced in structures containing two ductile phases if the strength ratio between the harder and softer phases is reduced.

Surface modification techniques are widely used to enhance the biological response to the implant materials. These techniques generally create a roughened surface, effectively increasing the surface area thus promoting cell adhesion. However, a negative side effect is a higher susceptibility of a roughened surface to failure due to the presence of multiple stress concentrators. The purpose of the study reported here was to examine the effects of surface modification by sand blasting and acid-etching (SLA) on the microstructure and fatigue performance of coarse-grained and ultrafine-grained (UFG) commercially pure titanium. Finer grain sizes, produced by equal channel angular pressing, resulted in lower values of surface roughness in SLA-processed material. This effect was associated with greater resistance of the UFG structure to plastic deformation. The fatigue properties of UFG Ti were found to be superior to those of coarse-grained Ti and conventional Ti-6Al-4V, both before and after SLA-treatment.

Supersaturated Cu-3at.% Ag alloy was processed by cold rolling and short-time annealing in order to achieve a combination of high strength and good tensile ductility. After annealing of the rolled samples a heterogeneous solute atom distribution was developed due to the dissolution of nanosized Ag particles in some volumes of the matrix. In regions with higher solute content, the high dislocation density formed due to rolling was stabilized, while in other volumes the dislocation density decreased. The heterogeneous microstructure obtained after annealing exhibited a much higher ductility and only a slightly lower strength than in the as-rolled state.

Fe-C-Cr-Nb-B-Mo alloy powder and AISI 420 SS powder are deposited using laser cladding to increase the hardness for wear resistant applications. Mixtures from 0 to 100 wt.% were evaluated to understand the effect on the elemental composition, microstructure, phases, and microhardness. The mixture of carbon, boron and niobium in the Fe-C-Cr-Nb-B-Mo alloy powder introduces complex carbides into a Fe-based matrix of AISI 420 SS which increases its hardness. Hardness increased linearly with increasing Fe-C-Cr-Nb-B-Mo alloy, but substantial micro-cracking was observed in the clad layer at additions of 60 wt.% and above; related to a transition from a hypoeutectic alloy containing α-Fe/α' dendrites with an (Fe,Cr)2B and γ-Fe eutectic to primary and continuous carbo-borides M2B (where M represents Fe and Cr) and M23(B,C)6 carbides (where M represents Fe, Cr, Mo) with MC particles (where M represents Nb and Mo). The highest average hardness, for an alloy without micro-cracking, of 952 HV was observed in a 40 wt.% alloy. High stress abrasive scratch testing was conducted on all alloys at various loads (500, 1500, 2500 N). Alloy content was found to have a strong effect on the wear mode and the abrasive wear rate, and the presence of micro-cracks was detrimental to abrasive wear resistance.

This paper examines the impact of coiling temperature and duration on the phase transformation and precipitation behavior of a low carbon and low niobium direct strip cast steel. Coiling was performed at three carefully chosen temperatures: (1) in the ferrite (600°C), (2) during the austenite decomposition (700°C) and (3) in the austenite (850°C). The coiling conditions were found to strongly affect the final microstructure and hardness response, thus highlighting the necessity to judiciously design the coiling treatment. Optical microscopy, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the microstructural constituents (polygonal ferrite, bainite and pearlite) and the NbC precipitates. Vickers macrohardness measurements are utilized to quantify the mechanical properties. The differences in hardening kinetics for the three different temperatures are shown to come from a complex combination of strengthening contributions.

In this work, a high-manganese Fe-23Mn-1.5Al-0.3C Twinning-Induced Plasticity (TWIP) steel was subjected to plastic shear deformation using Equal-Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) at 300 °C following route BC and additional annealing. The microstructure evolution during both deformation by ECAP and subsequent annealing was investigated and correlated with the mechanical properties. The successive grain refinement during ECAP was promoted by two parallel mechanisms, namely dislocation driven grain fragmentation and twin fragmentation, and accounted for the ultra-high strength. In addition, due to the relatively low volume fraction of deformation twins after ECAP at 300 °C, further contribution of deformation twinning during room temperature deformation allowed additional work-hardening capacity and elongation. During subsequent recovery annealing the ultra-fine grains and deformation twins were thermally stable, which supported retainment of the high yield strength along with regained uniform elongation. For the first time, the texture evolution during ECAP and during the following heat treatment was analyzed. After 1, 2, and 4 ECAP passes a transition texture with the characteristic texture components of both high- and low-SFE materials developed. During the following heat treatment the texture evolution proceeded similar to that observed in the same material after cold rolling. Retaining of the ECAP texture components due to oriented nucleation at grain boundaries and triple junctions as well as annealing twinning accounted for the formation of a weak, retained ECAP texture after recrystallization.

The austenite and ferrite microstructure evolution and softening mechanisms have been investigated in a 21Cr-10Ni-3Mo duplex stainless steel, containing about 60% austenite, deformed in torsion at 1200°C using a strain rate of 0.7 s-1. The above experimental conditions led to the formation of a small volume fraction of new austenite grains through discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX), which could not account for the observed large softening on the flow curve. DDRX grains mainly formed through the strain-induced migration of the pre-existing austenite grain boundaries, known to dominate in single-phase austenite, complemented by subgrain growth in the interface regions with ferrite. A significant portion of austenite dynamic softening has been attributed to the large-scale subgrain coalescence, the extent of which increased with strain, which seems to have contributed substantially to the observed flow stress decrease. The above process thus appears to represent an alternative mode of austenite dynamic softening to the classical DDRX in the duplex austenite/ferrite microstructure, characterised by limited availability of the pre-existing austenite/austenite high-angle boundaries, deformed at a high temperature. The softening mechanism within ferrite has been classified as "continuous DRX", characterised by a gradual increase in misorientations between neighbouring subgrains with strain and resulting in the progressive conversion of subgrains into "crystallites" bounded partly by low-angle and partly by large-angle boundaries.

The work presents a detailed investigation of the microstructure characteristics of the (111) oriented grains in a Fe-30Ni-Nb austenitic model steel subjected to hot uniaxial compression at 925 °C at a strain rate of 1 s- 1. The above grains exhibited a tendency to split into deformation bands having alternating orientations and largely separated by transition regions comprising arrays of closely spaced, extended sub-boundaries collectively accommodating large misorientations across very small distances. On a fine scale, the (111) oriented grains typically contained a mix of "microbands" (MBs) closely aligned with {111} slip planes and those significantly deviated from these planes. The above deformation substructure thus markedly differed from the microstructure type, comprising strictly non-{111} aligned MBs, expected within such grains on the basis of the uniaxial compression experiments performed using aluminium. Both the crystallographic MBs and their non-crystallographic counterparts typically displayed similar misorientations and formed self-screening arrays characterized by systematically alternating misorientations. The crystallographic MBs were exclusively aligned with {111} slip planes containing slip systems whose sum of Schmid factors was the largest among the four available slip planes. The corresponding boundaries appeared to mainly display either a large twist or a large tilt component.

Ti-Zr alloys have recently started to receive a considerable amount of attention as promising materials for dental applications. This work compares mechanical properties of a new Ti-15Zr alloy to those of commercially pure titanium Grade4 in two surface conditions - machined and modified by sand-blasting and etching (SLA). As a result of significantly smaller grain size in the initial condition (1-2µm), the strength of Ti-15Zr alloy was found to be 10-15% higher than that of Grade4 titanium without reduction in the tensile elongation or compromising the fracture toughness. The fatigue endurance limit of the alloy was increased by around 30% (560MPa vs. 435MPa and 500MPa vs. 380MPa for machined and SLA-treated surfaces, respectively). Additional implant fatigue tests showed enhanced fatigue performance of Ti-15Zr over Ti-Grade4.

Equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) was used to fabricate Al/steel bimetallic rod for potential application in overhead transmission conductors. Bimetallic rods consisted of an austenitic stainless steel 316L core and an Al alloy 6201 cladding layer. By means of ECAP processing at 175°C, increase of mechanical strength without loss of electrical conductivity was achieved for one particular rod geometry out of three geometries tested. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were employed to analyse how the microstructure was influenced by the number of processing passes and the bimetallic rod geometry. The co-deformation mechanism of the bimetallic rod under ECAP and accelerated dynamic ageing of Al alloy 6201 were discussed based on the microstructure characterisation results.

Konjac glucomannan - tungsten (KGM-T) gels were successfully prepared under DC electric fields, in the presence of sodium tungstate. The textural properties and microstructure of the gels were investigated by Texture Analyzer, Rheometer and SEM. Based on the response surface methodology (RSM) results, the optimum conditions for KGM-T gel springiness is 0.32% sodium tungstate concentration, 0.54% KGM concentration, 24.66V voltage and 12.37min treatment time. Under these conditions, the maximum springiness value of KGM-T gel is 1.21mm. Steady flow measurement indicated that KGM-T gel showed characteristic non-Newtonian pseudoplastic behaviour, with low flow behaviour indexes in the shear thinning region. SEM demonstrated the porosity of the freeze-dried samples. These findings may pave the way to use DC electric fields for the design and development of KGM gels and to apply KGM gels for practical applications.

In the current study, the effect of deformation mode (i.e., symmetric vs asymmetric rolling) on the extent of grain refinement and texture development in Ti-6Al-4V was examined through warm rolling of a martensitic starting microstructure. During rolling, the initial martensitic lath structure was progressively fragmented, primarily through continuous dynamic recrystallization. This eventually led to an ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure composed of equiaxed grains with a mean size of 180 to 230 nm, mostly surrounded by high-angle grain boundaries. Depending on the rolling reduction and deformation mode (symmetric and asymmetric), the rolled specimens displayed different layer morphologies throughout the specimen thickness: a fully UFG surface layer, a partial UFG transition layer, and a partially fragmented lath interior layer. Due to a higher level of effective strain and continuous rotation of the principle axis, asymmetric rolling resulted in a greater extent of grain refinement compared with symmetric rolling at a given thermomechanical condition. A bulk UFG structure was successfully obtained using 70 pct asymmetric rolling. In addition, the rolling texture exhibited various characteristics throughout the thickness due to a different combination of shear and compressive strains. Principally, the basal texture component was displaced from the normal toward rolling direction during asymmetric rolling, differing from the symmetric rolling textures.
