Curated by Liza McCosh, a major exhibition of pre-selected artwork that includes painting, drawing and sculpture. The exhibition included fifty five preselected artists/artworks from across Australia.The Art Concerning Environment Award is a national biennial award and the exhibition attempts to provide a platform that facilitates debate and promotes art as a catalyst for change.  The exhibition was supported by a public lecture on Climate Change (June 2, Warrnambool Art gallery) and facilitated by Guy Abrahams (guest judge).

Purpose:
To evaluate cross-cultural learning among Thai staff and host students from the Faculty of Nursing, Mahidol University (MU) and Australian guest students from the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Deakin University (DU), who participated in a study tour.

Design:
Descriptive exploratory evaluation.

Methods:
Key stakeholders were invited to participate resulting in a convenience sample of seven MU staff, five MU and 22 DU students. Data were collected using mixed methods. Qualitative data were theme analysed and quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics.

Main findings:
The semi-structured interviews with MU staff, focus group with MU students and free response questions in the online survey with DU students indicated the themes of enhanced and valuable cross-cultural learning and relationship building, the challenges of different social behaviours and the importance of tolerance and acceptance. In the online survey, over 77% (n = 17) of DU students reported high satisfaction with their cross-cultural learning on the study tour. The online survey included the validated Miville-Guzman Universality-Diversity scale short form (M-GUD-S). All Australian students reported seeking diversity of contact (X ± SD = 23.1 ± 4.4), relativistic appreciation (X ± SD = 24.7 ± 3.9), and comfort with differences (X ± SD = 26.2 ± 3.0), indicating high levels of openness to cultural diversity and similarity on the M-GUD-S. 

Conclusion and recommendations:
This study provides an example of an evaluated study tour emphasising cross-cultural relationship building. Findings indicate that nursing education should include opportunities for intercultural exchange among nursing students. Nurses require excellent skills in cross-cultural nursing and relating to meet the future global challenges to health care over the next millennium.

The thermodynamics of binary sII hydrogen clathrates with secondary guest molecules is studied with Monte Carlo simulations. The small cages of the sII unit cell are occupied by one H2 guest molecule. Different promoter molecules entrapped in the large cages are considered. Simulations are conducted at a pressure of 1000 atm in a temperature range of 233?293 K. To determine the stabilizing effect of different promoter molecules on the clathrate, the Gibbs free energy of fully and partially occupied sII hydrogen clathrates are calculated. Our aim is to predict what would be an efficient promoter molecule using properties such as size, dipole moment, and hydrogen bonding capability. The gas clathrate configurational and free energies are compared. The entropy makes a considerable contribution to the free energy and should be taken into account in determining stability conditions of binary sII hydrogen clathrates.

Drug targeting is an active area of research and nano-scaled drug delivery systems hold tremendous potential for the treatment of neoplasms. In this study, a novel cyclodextrin (CD)-based nanoparticle drug delivery system has been assembled and characterized for the therapy of folate receptor-positive [FR(+)] cancer. Water-soluble folic acid (FA)-conjugated CD carriers (FACDs) were successfully synthesized and their structures were confirmed by 1D/2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF-MS), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and circular dichroism. Drug complexes of adamatane (Ada) and cytotoxic doxorubicin (Dox) with FACD were readily obtained by mixed solvent precipitation. The average size of FACD-Ada-Dox was 1.5-2.5 nm. The host-guest association constant Ka was 1,639 M-1 as determined by induced circular dichroism and the hydrophilicity of the FACDs was greatly enhanced compared to unmodified CD. Cellular uptake and FR binding competitive experiments demonstrated an efficient and preferentially targeted delivery of Dox into FR-positive tumor cells and a sustained drug release profile was seen in vitro. The delivery of Dox into FR(+) cancer cells via endocytosis was observed by confocal microscopy and drug uptake of the targeted nanoparticles was 8-fold greater than that of non-targeted drug complexes. Our docking results suggest that FA, FACD and FACD-Ada-Dox could bind human hedgehog interacting protein that contains a FR domain. Mouse cardiomyocytes as well as fibroblast treated with FACD-Ada-Dox had significantly lower levels of reactive oxygen species, with increased content of glutathione and glutathione peroxidase activity, indicating a reduced potential for Dox-induced cardiotoxicity. These results indicate that the targeted drug complex possesses high drug association and sustained drug release properties with good biocompatibility and physiological stability. The novel FA-conjugated β-CD based drug complex might be promising as an anti-tumor treatment for FR(+) cancer.

Edition of journal guest-edited by Martin Hirst (Deakin), Wayne Hope and Alan Cocker (AUT UNiversity). Papers collected from conference organised by Centre for Journalism, Media & Democracy (JMAD). Ten of the eleven articles here were originally presented to the Political Economy of Communication conference held at the Auckland University of Technology in September 2011. This international event was organised by Journalism, Media and Democracy (JMAD), a research centre co-founded by Martin Hirst and Wayne Hope in May 2010. The founding objectives were to foster individual research projects for members; develop opportunities for collaborative, funded research projects; and arrange interdisciplinary media conferences. In September 2010, JMAD launched an inaugural one-day conference: Media, Democracy and the Public Sphere. The success of this undertaking
encouraged the centre to plan for a second, two-day conference in 2011. The invited keynote speakers, Professors Graham Murdock, Dwayne Winseck, and Janet Wasko were, and are, distinguished scholars in the political economy of communication.
They have also given identity and purpose to their field within the annual International
Association of Communication Research (IAMCR) conference, which includes a longstanding political economy of communication section. Contributors to this section are featured in the book reviewed for this issue, Wasko, J., Murdock, G., & Sousa, H. (2011). The handbook of political economy of communications.

Two macrocyclic bis-thiourea hosts 5 and 6 were constructed and their interactions with two dicarboxylates of similar size (pimelate = flexible and terephthalate = rigid) were evaluated using 1H NMR titration techniques. In contrast to previous work with thiourea functionalised [n]polynorbornanes (where a notable increase in H:G affinity was noted for the rigid guest), the new macrocyclic hosts, in particular host 6, bind pimelate more strongly than terephthalate (for 6 binding pimelate log Ka = 4.7, terephthalate log Ka = 3.7). A binding arrangement in which the flexible dicarboxylate is ‘perched’ above the macrocycle is proposed to justify these results.
