This study explores internal audit (IA) practices in selected Ethiopian organizations to identify factors associated with attributes of IA departments. Analytical questionnaire survey responses of 188 IA directors and staff from Ethiopian government ministries, state-owned enterprises and private companies were used. Canonical analysis results show that IA proficiency, scope of IA work and quality of IA planning and execution are higher in organizations where organizational policy authorizing IA is clearly defined, organizational risk exposure is high and internal audit's linkage with external audit is strong. The findings suggest that in organizations that are exposed to high risk, management tends to appreciate IA's assistance in managing risk and thus strengthens IA. Results also suggest the importance of internal and external audit linkages and IA charter (or similar organizational policy) to strengthen IA. The study provides further evidence of differences in IA attributes between public and private sector entities.

Environmental initiatives to support walking are keys to non-communicable disease prevention, but the relevant evidence comes mainly from cross-sectional studies. We examined neighborhood environmental attributes associated cross-sectionally with walking and those associated prospectively with walking maintenance.

This study aims to demonstrate by a simplified analysis how fund transfer pricing can be used to measure financial performance taking into account the flow of resources in a bank with only two branches. The present study was developed in three sections. The first section provides information regarding fund transfer pricing and its characteristics. This is followed by a section with an analysis demonstrating how fund transfer pricing can assist top management to evaluate financial performance in a financial institutions with only two business units. Finally, the third section has the concluding remarks about the benefits and limitations of the use of fund transfer pricing. This study uses a simple version of fund transfer pricing system to address a further complex problem which is the exchange of services among business units in a decentralized organization. The analysis has shown how fund transfer pricing can be used to manage a bank, directing the efforts of branch managers.

Australian nurses prepare for specialty practice by undertaking postgraduate theoretical and clinical education in partnership models between universities and hospitals. In our global healthcare system, nurses require advanced critical thinking and strong communication skills to provide safe, high quality patient care. Yet, few education programs focus on developing these skills. Team-Based Learning (TBL) is a specific educational strategy that encourages and rewards students to think critically and solve clinical problems individually and in teams. The aim of this study was to investigate critical care nursing students' perceptions and experiences of TBL after it was introduced into the second half of their postgraduate specialty course. Following Ethics Committee approval, thirty-two students were invited to participate in an extended response questionnaire on their perceptions of TBL as part of a larger study. Data were analyzed thematically. Postgraduate students perceived their professional growth was accelerated due to the skills and knowledge acquired through TBL. Four themes underpinned the development and accelerated acquisition of specialty nurse attributes due to TBL: Engagement, Learning Effectiveness, Critical Thinking, and Motivation to Participate. Team-Based Learning offered deep and satisfying learning experiences for students. The early acquisition of advanced critical thinking, teamwork and communication skills, and specialty practice knowledge empowered nurses to provide safe patient care with confidence.

How to identify influential nodes is still an open hot issue in complex networks. Lots of methods (e.g., degree centrality, betweenness centrality or K-shell) are based on the topology of a network. These methods work well in scale-free networks. In order to design a universal method suitable for networks with different topologies, this paper proposes a Multiple Attribute Fusion (MAF) method through combining topological attributes and diffused attributes of a node together. Two fusion strategies have been proposed in this paper. One is based on the attribute union (FU), and the other is based on the attribute ranking (FR). Simulation results in the Susceptible-Infected (SI) model show that our proposed method gains more information propagation efficiency in different types of networks. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

There has been a growing interest in environmental initiatives to reduce sedentary behaviour. A few existing studies on this topic are mostly cross-sectional, focused on the general adult population, and examining neighbourhood walkability. This study examined associations of perceived environmental attributes with change in TV viewing time over seven years among older Australian adults in the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle (AusDiab) study.

BACKGROUND: Ecological models of health behaviour are an important conceptual framework to address the multiple correlates of obesity. Several single-country studies previously examined the relationship between the built environment and obesity in adults, but results are very diverse. An important reason for these mixed results is the limited variability in built environments in these single-country studies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine associations between perceived neighbourhood built environmental attributes and BMI/weight status in a multi-country study including 12 environmentally and culturally diverse countries. METHODS: A multi-site cross-sectional study was conducted in 17 cities (study sites) across 12 countries (Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, the UK and USA). Participants (n = 14222, 18-66 years) self-reported perceived neighbourhood environmental attributes. Height and weight were self-reported in eight countries, and measured in person in four countries. RESULTS: Three environmental attributes were associated with BMI or weight status in pooled data from 12 countries. Safety from traffic was the most robust correlate, suggesting that creating safe routes for walking/cycling by reducing the speed and volume of traffic might have a positive impact upon weight status/BMI across various geographical locations. Close proximity to several local destinations was associated with BMI across all countries, suggesting compact neighbourhoods with more places to walk related to lower BMI. Safety from crime showed a curvilinear relationship with BMI, with especially poor crime safety being related to higher BMI. CONCLUSIONS: Environmental interventions involving these three attributes appear to have international relevance and focusing on these might have implications for tackling overweight/obesity.
