Development of a digital material representation (DMR) model of dual phase steel is presented within the paper. Subsequent stages involving generation of a reliable representation of microstructure morphology, assignment of material properties to component phases and incorporation of the model into the commercial finite element software are described within the paper. Different approaches used to recreate dual phase morphology in a digital manner are critically assessed. However, particular attention is placed on innovative identification of phase properties at the micro scale by using micro-pillar compression tests. The developed DMR model is finally applied to model influence of micro scale features on failure initiation and propagation under loading conditions.

Unlike in general recommendation scenarios where a user has only a single role, users in trust rating network, e.g. Epinions, are associated with two different roles simultaneously: as a truster and as a trustee. With different roles, users can show distinct preferences for rating items, which the previous approaches do not involve. Moreover, based on explicit single links between two users, existing methods can not capture the implicit correlation between two users who are similar but not socially connected. In this paper, we propose to learn dual role preferences (truster/trustee-specific preferences) for trust-aware recommendation by modeling explicit interactions (e.g., rating and trust) and implicit interactions. In particular, local links structure of trust network are exploited as two regularization terms to capture the implicit user correlation, in terms of truster/trustee-specific preferences. Using a real-world and open dataset, we conduct a comprehensive experimental study to investigate the performance of the proposed model, RoRec. The results show that RoRec outperforms other trust-aware recommendation approaches, in terms of prediction accuracy. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Tempering has been used as a method to develop a range of dual phase steels with the same martensite morphology and volume fraction, but containing phases with different relative strengths. These steels were used to examine the strain partitioning between the two constituent phases experimentally through mechanical testing and numerically through finite element modelling. It was found that increasing the differential in strength between the two phases not only produces regions of high strain, but also regions of low strain. On average, a larger difference in strength between the phases increased the strain carried by the softer phase. There was no discernible preferential strain localisation to the ferrite/martensite interface, with the regions of strain localisation being determined by the morphology of the microstructure. A direct correlation between the average strain in the ferrite, and the measured ductility has been found. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

A type of photo- and thermo-responsive composite microsphere composed of reduced graphene oxide nanoparticles and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (rGO@pNIPAM) is successfully fabricated by a facile solution mixing method. Due to the high optical absorbance and thermal conduction of rGO, the composite microspheres are endowed with the new property of photo-response, in addition to the intrinsic thermally sensitive property of pNIPAM. This new ability undoubtedly enlarges the scope of applications of the microgel spheres. Furthermore, through controlling the rGO content in the composite, the photo- and thermo-sensitivity of the composite can be effectively modulated. That is, with a lower rGO content (≤32% by weight), the composite microspheres perform only thermally induced changes, such as volume contraction (by ∼45% in diameter) and drug release, when crossing the lower critical solution temperature of pNIPAM. With a higher rGO content (∼47.5%), both temperature and light irradiation can trigger changes in the composite. However, when the rGO content is increased to around 64.5%, the thermo-responsivity of the composite disappears, and the spheres exhibit only photo-induced drug release. With a further increase in rGO content, the environmentally responsive ability of the microspheres vanishes. This journal is © the Partner Organisations 2014.

RATIONALE: Current research suggests that glucose facilitates performance on cognitive tasks which possess an episodic memory component and a relatively high level of cognitive demand. However, the extent to which this glucose facilitation effect is uniform across the lifespan is uncertain. METHODS: This study was a repeated measures, randomised, placebo-controlled, cross-over trial designed to assess the cognitive effects of glucose in younger and older adults under single and dual task conditions. Participants were 24 healthy younger (average age 20.6 years) and 24 healthy older adults (average age 72.5 years). They completed a recognition memory task after consuming drinks containing 25 g glucose and a placebo drink, both in the presence and absence of a secondary tracking task. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Glucose enhanced recognition memory response time and tracking precision during the secondary task, in older adults only. These findings do not support preferential targeting of hippocampal function by glucose, rather they suggest that glucose administration differentially increases the availability of attentional resources in older individuals.

The low cycle fatigue (LCF) behaviour of a dual phase (DP) steel with different martensite volume fractions has been investigated, with particular focus on fatigue life, cyclic hardening/softening behaviour and microstructural evolution. DP steels with martensite volume fractions between 13% and 88% were produced and their monotonic and cyclic deformation behaviours evaluated. The LCF life has been examined in depth and compared with published literature. It has been concluded that, once normalised for plastic strain amplitude, the fatigue life was found to be significantly reduced by an increase in the martensite volume fraction. All alloys were observed to show some initial cyclic hardening followed by cyclic softening. Clear sub-cell formation occurred in ferrite grains irrespective of the martensite volume fraction, and it is suggested that this cell formation and martensite softening are responsible for the cyclic softening behaviour.

This study examines the cyclic plastic deformation behavior and microstructural development of a dual phase steel in both symmetric and asymmetric cycling in strain and stress control modes. The low-cycle fatigue (LCF) and mean stress relaxation (MSR) tests show very similar fatigue lifetimes. However, fatigue lifetimes reduce and prominent accumulation of directional strain was observed in ratcheting. A microstructural analysis has revealed that the type of cyclic test carried out has a noticeable impact on the substructural development, and this has been correlated with differences in accumulated tensile strain. Electron backscatter diffraction investigation has shown larger in-grain misorientation for ratcheting specimen in comparison with LCF and MSR specimens. The orientation of ferrite grains was found to have very little effect on their substructural development, and strain localization commonly occurred in the ferrite at the ferrite/martensite interface.

BACKGROUND: Falls are a major public health concern with at least one third of people aged 65 years and over falling at least once per year, and half of these will fall repeatedly, which can lead to injury, pain, loss of function and independence, reduced quality of life and even death. Although the causes of falls are varied and complex, the age-related loss in muscle power has emerged as a useful predictor of disability and falls in older people. In this population, the requirements to produce explosive and rapid movements often occurs whilst simultaneously performing other attention-demanding cognitive or motor tasks, such as walking while talking or carrying an object. The primary aim of this study is to determine whether dual-task functional power training (DT-FPT) can reduce the rate of falls in community-dwelling older people. METHODS/DESIGN: The study design is an 18-month cluster randomised controlled trial in which 280 adults aged ≥65 years residing in retirement villages, who are at increased risk of falling, will be randomly allocated to: 1) an exercise programme involving DT-FPT, or 2) a usual care control group. The intervention is divided into 3 distinct phases: 6 months of supervised DT-FPT, a 6-month 'step down' maintenance programme, and a 6-month follow-up. The primary outcome will be the number of falls after 6, 12 and 18 months. Secondary outcomes will include: lower extremity muscle power and strength, grip strength, functional assessments of gait, reaction time and dynamic balance under single- and dual-task conditions, activities of daily living, quality of life, cognitive function and falls-related self-efficacy. We will also evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the programme for preventing falls. DISCUSSION: The study offers a novel approach that may guide the development and implementation of future community-based falls prevention programmes that specifically focus on optimising muscle power and dual-task performance to reduce falls risk under 'real life' conditions in older adults. In addition, the 'step down' programme will provide new information about the efficacy of a less intensive maintenance programme for reducing the risk of falls over an extended period. The low cycle fatigue (LCF) behaviour of a dual phase (DP) steel with different martensite morphologies has been investigated in the present work. DP steels with coarse martensite morphologies show inferior LCF life in comparison with fine martensite morphologies for all martensite volume fractions examined. It is suggested that this is be due to the development of larger local plastic strain concentrations in the ferrite with a coarser microstructure, compared to the finer microstructural morphology. Fatigue cracks were observed to initiate inside ferrite grains, and to preferentially propagate through the softer ferrite phase. The average sub-cell size was finer in samples with higher martensite volume fractions, but the sub-cell size was almost unaffected by the martensite morphology.

The effect of volume fraction and hardness of martensite on the Bauschinger effect in Dual Phase (DP) steel was investigated for strain levels close to those observed in automotive stamping. Five different grades of DP steel were produced by controlled heat treatment allowing the examination of the Bauschinger effect for three different volume fractions of martensite and three levels of martensite hardness. Compression-tension and shear reversal tests were performed to examine the Bauschinger effect at high levels of forming strain. Good correlation between the shear reversal and the compression-tension test was observed suggesting that for DP steel, shear stress strain data, converted to equivalent stress-strain, may be applied directly to characterize kinematic hardening behavior for numerical simulations. Permanent softening was observed following strain reversal and increased with martensite volume fraction and pre-strain level. While the Bauschinger ratio saturates at 3% pre-strain, the Bauschinger strain increases linearly with forming strain without showing saturation. This suggests that to model material behavior accurately in forming processes involving complex loading paths and high levels of strain, test data generated at high strain is required.

A novel tri-block copolymer poly(oxopentanoate ethyl methacrylate)-block-poly(pyridyl disulfide ethyl acrylate)-block-poly(ethylene glycol acrylate) [poly(OEMA-b-PDEA-b-PEGA)], retaining active keto groups and pyridyl disulfide (PDS) side functionalities, was synthesized as a drug delivery vehicle using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization method. One mimic drug pyridine-2-thione (PT) was introduced into the monomer, PDEA for copolymerization. The other mimic drug O-benzylhydroxylamine (BHA) was conjugated with tri-block copolymer via efficient oxime coupling chemistry, followed by the attachment onto graphene via π-π stacking interaction to obtain a graphene/tri-block copolymer composite. 1H NMR, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), atomic force microscope (AFM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used to verify the successful step-wise preparation of the tri-block copolymer and drug loaded composite. In vitro release behaviors of BHA and PT from graphene/tri-block copolymer composite via dual drug release mechanisms were investigated. BHA can be released under acid environment, while PT will be released in the presence of reducing agents, such as dithiothreitol (DTT) or glutathione (GSH). It can be envisioned that this novel composite could be exploited as a novel intracellular drug delivery system via dual release mechanisms.
