Science may be simply defined as a way of finding out about how the world works. It is often viewed as objective and being built on a step-wise procedural base. The question arises as to whether school science needs to be different to cutting-edge (‘real’) science since the outcomes have different purposes, one requiring scientific breakthroughs, the other being imitative and simple. The divergence between these two realities of science impacts on the development of science curricula in that relevance for students, rather than purely imitating real science, steers science curricula.

Diabetes education is a process, the key to which is establishing a therapeutic relationship with the individual. The overall goal of diabetes education is to enhance the individual's health capability, including their ability to solve problems and apply the learning to self-care. Thus, diabetes education is an interactive process of teaching and learning where information is co-generated. This innovative new book explores the 'how' of diabetes education, rather than the 'what' and the 'why'. Background: National and international strategies to increase physical activity emphasize environmental and policy changes that can have widespread and long-lasting impact. Evidence from multiple countries using comparable methods is required to strengthen the evidence base for such initiatives. Because some environment and policy changes could have generalizable effects and others may depend on each country’s context, only international studies using comparable methods can identify the relevant differences. Methods: Currently 12 countries are participating in the International Physical Activity and the Environment Network (IPEN) study. The IPEN Adult study design involves recruiting adult participants from neighborhoods with wide variations in environmental walkability attributes and socioeconomic status (SES). Results: Eleven of twelve countries are providing accelerometer data and 11 are providing GIS data. Current projections indicate that 14,119 participants will provide survey data on built environments and physical activity and 7145 are likely to provide objective data on both the independent and dependent variables. Though studies are highly comparable, some adaptations are required based on the local context. Conclusions: This study was designed to inform evidence-based international and country-specific physical activity policies and interventions to help prevent obesity and other chronic diseases that are high in developed countries and growing rapidly in developing countries.

Identifying gene signatures that are associatedwith the estrogen receptor based breast cancer samples is achallenging problem that has significant implications in breastcancer diagnosis and treatment. Various existing approaches foridentifying gene signatures have been developed but are not ableto achieve the satisfactory results because of their severallimitations. Subnetwork-based approaches have shown to be arobust classification method that uses interaction datasets suchas protein-protein interaction datasets. It has been reported thatthese interaction datasets contain many irrelevant interactionsthat have no biological meaning associated with them, and thusit is essential to filter out those interactions which can improvethe classification results. In this paper, we therefore, proposed ahub-based reliable gene expression algorithm (HRGE) thateffectively extracts the significant biologically-relevantinteractions and uses hub-gene topology to generate thesubnetwork based gene signatures for ER+ and ER- breastcancer subtypes. The proposed approach shows the superiorclassification accuracy amongst the other existing classifiers, inthe validation dataset.

This chapter begins with an exploration of the digital divide in the Australian context. This discussion is followed by an examination of online education, professional development and the capacity of ICT to enhance the well-being of practitioners. The chapter then focuses on the use of ICT in human services and the rise of computer mediated self help and support groups. The potential for ICT to promote and extend political participation is also explored as well as the role of ICT in global development. Throughout, the potential for inclusion and exclusion is highlighted, using examples and critical analysis for exploring the inclusionary and exclusionary capacity of ICT.
