The rhetoric of ‘community’ : ABC local radio's coverage of the 2009 Victorian bushfires

This article joins recent debates in media and communication studies concerning audience participation in news journalism. Specifically, we investigate the impact of an increasing reliance on audience-generated content on newsroom practice in traditional media organisations. We do this by recounting and analysing the experiences of journalists involved in ABC Radio's coverage of the dramatic Victorian bushfires of early 2009, which relied heavily in listener contributions and was closely integrated with the ABC's online coverage. Interviews with two staff at ABC Gippsland, and the ABC's Manager of Emergency Broadcasting provide the basis for a case study of the kinds of tensions that media workers routinely confront within an organisation like the ABC. The interviews suggest that in negotiating the possibility of increased audience participation, journalists and their managers are thinking about much more that the rhetorics of democracy and the validity of news values: their focus is also on a complex structure, the need for skill (re)development and the precise mechanics of creating and maintaining productive relationships with local communities. The significance of the research lies in its attempt to bring together a number of related factors: the increasingly active role of audiences in generating and supplying news content; the impact of digital communications technologies on news production practices; and the ABC's ongoing development of its now contested role as an 'emergency broadcaster'.

The ABC, the Australian Children’s Television Foundation, and the emergence of digital children’s television in Australia

 This paper analyses the campaign to establish terrestrial digital children’s public service broadcasting in Australia. It finds that the development of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s digital children’s channel (ABC3), an initiative initially embraced somewhat opportunistically, enabled an expansion strategy for the public service broadcaster that ultimately helped determine the shape of its current digital channel portfolio. Contrasting the collective and divergent interpretations of future audience behaviours and needs developed by the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF) and the ABC, it argues that both organisations developed strategies and made policy decisions that were influential in conditioning the current digital television ecology.

At night they softly emanate a glow much like the glow of a television in the living room. The animated space is choreographed and timed in its movement, broadcasting the contents of the house. There is an interplay between real object and virtual object: the house is made of transparent/translucent glass while the interior objects are virtual images on the screen; total internal reflection occurs so that the image can be seen from certain angles only; the glass is a medium which distorts the animated image, while the animated image permeates the glass with its colour, movement and glow.

The launch of ABC News 24 Television : interview on ABC Local Radio

Dr Colleen Murrell was interviewed on ABC local radio in advance of the launch of ABC Australia's 24-hour TV station. In the interview she discusses the reasons for the ABC's new venture in broadcasting and places it in the context of other international stations such as BBC World, CNN and Sky News. Dr Murrell also discusses the cost implications and the ability of the ABC to produce original content from its international correspondents.
