Objective: Explore the association between Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) and aging. The American Foundation of Urologic Disease and the American Psychiatric Association stipulate that HSDD is only diagnosed when both low sexual desire and sexually related personal distress are present.
Design : Community-based, cross-sectional study.
Setting : Europe (UK, Germany, France, Italy) and the USA.
Patient(s) Women aged 20-70 in sexual relationships participating in the Women’s International Study of Health and Sexuality (n=1998 Europe, n=1591 USA).
Intervention(s) : No interventions were administered.
Main Outcome Measures : Self-administered questionnaire that included two validated instruments: Profile of Female Sexual Function© measured sexual desire; Personal Distress Scale© measured sexual distress. Women with low desire and distress were considered to have HSDD.
Results : The proportion of European women with low desire increased from 11% amongst women aged 20-29 years to 53% amongst women aged 60-70 years. The proportion of American women with low desire displayed a trend towards an increase with age. In the 20-29 year age group 65% of European women and 67% of American women with low sexual desire were distressed by it. This decreased to 22% and 37%, respectively, in the 60-70 year age group. In Europe and the USA the prevalence of HSDD in the population did not change significantly with age (6-13% in Europe, 12-19% in the USA).
Conclusions: The proportion of women with low desire increased with age while the proportion of women distressed about their low desire decreased with age. Consequently, the prevalence of HSDD remained essentially constant with age. This may explain why no association between HSDD and age is often reported in the literature.

The diagnosis of borderline personality disorder frequently underlies self-harm and suicidal presentations to the emergency department. Borderline pathology combined with high levels of comorbidity, stigma, and treatment uncertainty, increase the challenges of caring for someone with this diagnosis in an emergency setting. Attributes such as black-and-white thinking and splitting may compromise an already precarious situation. The maintenance of safety requires prioritisation and necessitates a practical and respectful approach, which avoids notions of attention-seeking behaviour. Clinical assessment should distinguish between self-harm and suicide attempts where possible and take into account acute on chronic risk. The emergency clinician will need to consider the degree of containment required in the emergency department and is encouraged to maintain transparency and honesty with the client regarding treatment decisions. If hospitalisation needs to be considered, clinicians should take into account immediate therapeutic benefit versus the counter-therapeutic risk of dependency and regression. Overall, it is reasonable for clinicians to aim for clients to return to their pre-crisis level of functioning, and beneficial for clinicians to approach this client group with therapeutic optimism.

PURPOSE. This study aimed to investigate the attitudes of Australian psychiatric triage and crisis clinicians toward those with a diagnosis of personality disorder.
DESIGN AND METHODS. The design of the study was exploratory descriptive research. The study employed a survey method using Bowers and Allan's (2006) Attitude to Personality Disorder Questionnaire, which was designed to identify global attitudes toward those with a diagnosis of personality disorder.
FINDINGS. The findings of this study indicate that psychiatric crisis and triage clinicians hold negative attitudes toward those with a diagnosis of personality disorder.
PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS. Education and clinical supervision is required to address negative clinician attitudes.

This article tells the story of a cross-cultural encounter on a beach at King George's Sound in the south west of Australia in 1826, when Major Edmund Lockyer arrived to establish a British military garrison. The account we have of those early encounters come from the pen of Lockyer, and by taking a close reading of his journal this article attempts to reveal the meanings and context of Aboriginal actions. It also analyses how the Aborigines and the British made sense and subsequently responded to the encounter. Whilst this story is not given iconic status in Australian historiography, it is valuable in opening up a porthole into this contact zone at the moment when precarious relationships were being formed.

This study found that Parent Management Training was a successful treatment for promary school aged children who were referred to a mental health clinic and diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder. The positive outcome was not affected by the child having comorbid disorders. These findings have relevance to the clinical field.

This thesis examined a prediction of Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory regarding the association between personality traits and motivated behaviour and, whether reward-and-punishment sensitivity is associated with Attention-deficit / Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Results supported the predicted association between personality and motivated behaviour, but not the predicted association between reward-and-punishment sensitivity and ADHD.

The fairytale motif of the red shoes continues to fascinate many contemporary authors and artists. What inspires these obsessive and contagious narratives? The raw, unfettered femaleness of the red shoes, reminiscent of the pre-oedipal realm, suggests a means of escaping confining patriarchal conceptions of woman, desire and creativity.

This study implemented social skills training as an adjunctive to psychostimulant medication with a sample of 14 boys with ADHD, compared to a control group of 14 ADHD boys whose treatment consisted of psychostimulant medication only. Results indicated that social skills training provides additive effects on some aspects of social functioning, over and above those of medication only. Findings are discussed in terms of their contributions to the understanding and treatment of the social difficulties in childhood ADHD. Costs and benefits of this approach to treatment are also considered.

Internet-based interventions with therapist support have proven effective for treating a range of mental health conditions. This study examined whether frequency of therapist contact affected treatment outcomes. Fifty-seven people with panic disorder (including 32 with agoraphobia) were randomly allocated to an 8-week Internet-based cognitive behavioural treatment intervention (Panic Online) with either frequent (three e-mails per week) or infrequent (one e-mail per week) support from a psychologist. Posttreatment, intention-to-treat analyses revealed that both treatments were effective at improving panic disorder and agoraphobia severity ratings, panicrelated cognitions, negative affect, and psychological and physical quality of life domains, with no differences between conditions. High end-state functioning was achieved by 28.6% of the frequent and infrequent participants, respectively. Therapist alliance, treatment credibility, and satisfaction also did not differ between groups, despite significantly greater therapist time invested in the frequent contact condition. The results provide evidence that the effectiveness of Internet-based mental health interventions may be independent of the frequency of therapist support and may, therefore, be more cost-effective than previously reported.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are developmental conditions characterized by deficits in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and obsessive/stereotyped patterns of behaviour. Although there is no reliable neurophysiological marker associated with ASDs, dysfunction of the parieto-frontal mirror neuron system has been suggested as a disturbance linked to the disorder. Mirror neurons (MNs) are visuomotor neurons which discharge both when performing and observing a goal directed action. Research suggests MNs may have a role in imitation, empathy, theory of mind and language. Although the research base is small, evidence from functional MRI, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and an electroencephalographic component called the mu rhythm suggests MNs are dysfunctional in subjects with ASD. These deficits are more pronounced when ASD subjects complete tasks with social relevance, or that are emotional in nature. Promising research has identified that interventions targeting MN related functions such as imitation can improve social functioning in ASDs. Boosting the function of MNs may improve the prognosis of ASDs, and contribute to diagnostic clarity.
