The Indian public sphere in social media era

The media in a number of Western countries, including Australia, could be forgiven for envying the growth of the Indian media in recent decades. In contrast to more mature media markets in Australia and elsewhere, the Indian media is surviving the onslaught of new media technologies including social media platforms available to news audiences as an alternative to traditional news media. However, despite the omnipresence and diversity of over 800 television channels, over 94,000 publications and hundreds of radio stations, the ‘commercial’ imperative of Indian news media has raised doubts about their capacity to meet the ‘ideals’ of the public sphere. This paper examines the Indian public sphere in terms of citizens’ increasing use of various social media platforms to express their anger, frustration and protest against the system of governance and corruption. It analyses the use of social media platforms by mainstream media, socio-political organisations and audiences alike during recent events such as the Mumbai terror attack in 2008; the anti-corruption movement in 2011; protests against a lack of safety for women in 2012–13; and the federal elections in 2014; to understand the implications for the public sphere in India. The paper outlines interplay between the mainstream media’s coverage of some of these significant events, and the audience conversations pertaining to these news events on various social media platforms. It explores the increased utilisation of social media platforms by youth and the middle class, who have often remained disengaged with governance in the country, as a sign of deepening democracy and widening public sphere in India, despite the ‘digital divide’ that still exists in the country.

How profitable is the Indian stock market?

In this paper, using a range of technical trading and momentum trading strategies, we show that the Indian stock market is profitable. We find robust evidence that investing in some sectors is relatively more profitable than investing in others. We show that sectoral heterogeneity with respect to profitability is a result of the gradual diffusion of information from the market to the sectors. Specifically, we show that while the market predicts returns of sectors, the magnitude of predictability varies with sectors. Our results are robust to a range of trading strategies. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

Isolation and development of oil producing microorganisms including Thraustochytrids from Indian and Australian marine biodiversity

 The author isolated and characterized several Thraustochytrid strains from Indian and Australian marine biodiversity and compared these strains for their application in biodiesel and DHA production depend on their fatty acid profile. Strain having best productivity was further optimized for the coproduction of DHA and biodiesel.

Reducing the risk of heart disease among Indian Australians: knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs regarding food practices - a focus group study

BACKGROUND: Australia has a growing number of Asian Indian immigrants. Unfortunately, this population has an increased risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). Dietary adherence is an important strategy in reducing risk for CHD. This study aimed to gain greater understanding of the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs relating to food practices in Asian Indian Australians. METHODS: Two focus groups with six participants in each were recruited using a convenience sampling technique. Verbatim transcriptions were made and thematic content analysis undertaken. RESULTS: Four main themes that emerged from the data included: migration as a pervasive factor for diet and health; importance of food in maintaining the social fabric; knowledge and understanding of health and diet; and elements of effective interventions. DISCUSSION: Diet is a complex constructed factor in how people express themselves individually, in families and communities. There are many interconnected factors influencing diet choice that goes beyond culture and religion to include migration and acculturation. CONCLUSIONS: Food and associated behaviors are an important aspect of the social fabric. Entrenched and inherent knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and traditions frame individuals' point of reference around food and recommendations for an optimal diet.

The current status of environmental reporting by Indian companies

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the state of environmental reporting by Indian companies on their web sites and also in their annual reports.
Design/methodology/approach: The web sites of the companies in the sample were visited to examine the accessibility and extent of environmental information disclosure on their web sites. The annual reports for 2003‐2004, as available on the companies' web sites were selected to investigate the extent of environmental information disclosure in these annual reports.
Findings: The paper finds that, although there are no regulations enforcing the disclosure of environmental information, most of the Indian companies have disclosed environmental information. These companies provided more environmental information on their web sites compared to the information provided in their annual reports.
Originality/value: This study contributes to the existing body of environmental reporting literature by focusing on the status of environmental reporting by companies of an emerging economy and also contributes to the existing body of environmental reporting literature by focusing on the accessibility of environmental information on web sites of respective companies.

Does Internet reporting improve the accessibility of financial reporting in a global world? A comparative study of New Zealand and Indian companies

 The accessibility of business reporting, including financial reports on company websites is not necessarily increased by providing more information on websites. The quality of Internet-based information is affected by both the accessibility and quantity of information provided. However, the accessibility of the information is an under researched area. This paper contributes to the existing body of knowledge on webbased business reporting, by considering the dimension of accessibility in terms of website appearance and visual design from four different perspectives. The aim is to consider the differences that occur in website organisation as a way of considering the accessibility of information provided on company websites. The paper considers the differences in the accessibility of website information between New Zealand and Indian companies as a means of demonstrating the variation that can occur across countries as well as within the same reporting structure. We conclude that Internet financial reporting does provide the illusion of comparability but without a more sustained focus on the harmonisation of terminology and attributes included in Internet reporting, the potential for comparison is reduced.

Estimating Forward Pricing Function: How Efficient is Indian Stock Index Futures Market?

This paper uses Indian stock futures data to explore unbiased expectations and efficient market hypothesis. Having experienced voluminous transactions within a short time span after its establishment, the Indian stock futures market provides an unparalleled case for exploring these issues involving expectation and efficiency. Besides analyzing market efficiency between cash and futures prices using cointegration and error correction frameworks, the efficiency hypothesis is also investigated after explicitly modeling the underlying state of the market (expansion or contraction) through the first-order Markov switching set-up. The results based on Markov switching analysis show that relatively longer time horizon is more effective in eliminating arbitrage opportunities than the short run.

Are Indian stock returns predictable?

In this paper we show that Indian stock returns, based on industry portfolios, portfolios sorted on book-to-market, and on size, are predictable. While we discover that this predictability holds both in in-sample and out-of-sample tests, predictability is not homogenous. Some predictors are important than others and some industries and portfolios of stocks are more predictable and, therefore, more profitable than others. We also discover that a mean combination forecast approach delivers significant out-of-sample performance. Our results survive a battery of robustness tests.

Nonsuicidal self-injury in Indian adolescents: nonexistent or unacknowledged?

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) has been a neglected entity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In this correspondence (letter to the editor), authors are advocating for greater research in this area in LMICs as it will help to compare and contrast prevalence rates of NSSI in these countries with high-income countries (HICs), identify context-specific risk and protective factors to better understand the pathophysiology of NSSI and devise context-specific interventions resulting in improvement in adolescent mental health worldwide.

Mixed feelings: Anglo-Indians and the distribution of the sensible in Indian cinema

Hollywood, and various regional cinemas in India typically represent Mixed-Race Anglo-Indians as a degenerate community marked by lax morals, alcoholism, and indolence. These stereotypical tropes typically generate indignant protests from members of this miniscule Indian community, and debates about the representation of Anglo-Indians focus on the injustices propagated by such stereotypes. This paper rethinks Anglo-Indian representation in cinema by drawing on Jacques Rancière’s concept of ‘the distribution of the sensible,’ which provides a cartography for understanding how one’s various identity assignations structure sensory experience. In other words those who are marginalized have ways of seeing and hearing from those occupy normative or dominant subject positions, and these differences are best approached in terms of neo-Kantian aesthetic judgment. It also argues, with Rancière, that ‘inequality’ is built into the distribution of the sensible. Drawing on a number of Indian and Hollywood films — including Aparna Sen’s 36 Chowringhee Lane (1981) Anjan Dutt’s Bada Din (1998) Ismail Merchant’s Cotton Mary (2000), Bow Barracks Forever (2004) and Harry McClure’s Going Away (2013) — the paper contends that Rancière’s ‘distribution of the sensible’ allows us to think through a politics that is connected to ‘aesthetic judgement’ as well as a politics of differentiation that informs our understanding of the function of minoritarian characters in narrative cinema.
