Dancing with death : risk, health promotion and injecting drug users

The thesis investigated ambivalent attitudes towards death in injecting drug users, factors that may lead to such ambivalent attitudes and implications for health promotion campaigns. It was found that this relationship with death was principally attributable to government drug policy in Australia.

Experiences of the stolen generation : laws and inequalities

Examines the inequalities of the Aboriginal Australian and politics, government, history, legal status and the effects of Aboriginal institutions in Western Australia. The researcher found that the destruction and disappearance of documents, files and records greatly impacted the thesis.

"The children must go out white"

This study looks at indigenous child removal in Western Australia as a case of genocide. The key figure in the process of child removal in Western Australia was the Chief Protector, A.O. Neville. The intention was complete biological absorption through forced child removal and controlled procreation of Aboriginal women.

Changing politics of male homosexuality in contemporary Singapore

Over the last few years, the Singapore government appears to have been softening its hard line position on homosexuality in Singapore. This thesis examines the various developments that have recently taken place in this area; assesses the role of the media in homosexual related stories and coverage, and conducts a comprehensive survey eliciting views of young people towards a wide range of established and emerging homosexual issues in Singapore.

Bioregional planning

The study investigated the appropriateness of bioregional planning as a preferential framework for better integrating land-use planning and natural resource management and found it may be appropriate in Victoria for improved biodiversity conservation. Main issues impeding wider implementation include poor Government coordination and historic cultural attitudes between the two professions.

Early critics of White Australia - 1870-1914

This thesis explores criticism of racial exclusion and prejudice in Australia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It argues that resistance to White Australia was more sustained and significant than previously understood and examines the complexities of racial thinking in relation to contemporary understandings of racism and anti-racism.

Institutional effects of corporate planning : the case of Australian universities

This thesis presents a longitudinal analysis of the strategic behaviour of Australian universities between 1993 and 2000. The findings suggest that Australian universities enunciate similar goals and objectives in their strategic planning, and that the activities of universities are largely determined by the patterns of activities undertaken in previous years. The empirical evidence suggests there is only a small amount of differentiation in the activities of Australian universities, despite a Government policy platform that identified institutional diversity as a primary goal.

Radical conservative experiment in New South Wales education

This study, written from the perspective of a parent activist, articulates the 'battle of ideas' or struggle 'around the truth' of public education in New South Wales since the conservative Greiner government came to power in 1988 and instituted the 'new right' agenda. Political control is theorised in the light of debates about hegemony, power, ideology and truth. Documents what happened in 'consultations' about educational reform between the Ministers and their appointees on on the one hand, and the public education lobby, on the other.

Technogyny : the transformation of reproduction

Explores the major social and political consequences of new reproductive and genetic technologies. Increasingly the experience and process of reproduction is dominated by technology and medicine. Suggests an international institution such as the UN is likely to be the most effective in addressing the concerns associated with the technologies' adverse effects. Such intervention is unlikely without active and sophisticated lobbying from women around the world.

Australia's international students : policies and experiences

Examines the experiences of international students, the impact of government and institutional policies and practices on international students, and the implications of such policies and experiences for Australia's engagement with Asia. The thesis concentrates on the period from 1980 to the present.

Analysis of public housing standards in Victoria : 1939-1995

The "housing standard" is a government policy document which defines minimum dwelling standards. This thesis outlines the development of public housing standards in Victoria between 1939 and 1995. The Hotham Housing Estate, North Melbourne, was the case study from which a proposed framework for critical analysis of minimum housing standards was derived.

Knowing in, through and about : the PhD journey

This study involves an account of the factors leading to the development and evolution of three public art spaces concerned with contemporary art in the 1980s in Melbourne. The three spaces – Heide Park and Art Gallery, 200 Gertrude Street, and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art developed programs that promoted and presented contemporary art throughout the eighties. Prior to the 1980s the National Gallery of Victoria was the major public institution concerned with the promotion and presentation of contemporary art in Melbourne.

The study describes and analyses events leading to the establishment of each new space and investigates the formations and groups who played leading roles. A case study approach has been used which explores the networks and groupings that developed in setting up and maintaining each space. Theoretical perspectives drawn from Bourdieu, Williams and Wolff are employed in order to explore the social and cultural meanings of the networks and groups responsible for developing the three art spaces. These perspectives are used to help account for the motives and ideology employed by individuals and groups, such as artists, academics and politicians.

Each of the three spaces mainly developed from different clusters and groups, although some individuals had involvement in more than one of the spaces. The study concludes with a cultural analysis that identifies several key factors, such as forms of patronage, government policy direction and the power and influence of various sectors and formations. Government funding for art is a complex area of activity that draws upon a wide constituency of individuals and agents that include artists, wealthy business people, collectors, and so on. The study reveals much about government intervention and cultural and social formations promoting art in Melbourne during the 1980s.

Corporate social responsibility reporting : a business strategy by Australian banks?

The growth of voluntary corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting reflects society's expectations for business to set higher ethical standards and to undertake business in a way that meets the profit imperative (the bottom line). Additionally, the community expects socially and environmentally responsible behaviour practices; the so-called triple bottom line approach. The paper briefly reviews the development of corporate social responsibility reporting from the perspective of two large Australian banks and attempts to understand their motivation for voluntary disclosure. Stakeholder theory and game theory provide a means to analyse why banks undertake CSR reporting. The paper compares Westpac and National Australia Bank's CSR reporting over the period 2004-2005 utilising external rating agencies and CSR reports to determine the extent of disclosure in relation to employees, environment, community and customers. The paper concludes with a discussion of the pros and cons of CSR, the role of regulation and recommendations for future policy direction.

Cultural ways of knowing

As a strategic response to HIV, this research made a significant contribution to the development of effective models of translation - from a rhetoric of lived experiences of HIV to social, political and cultural change. This brought benefits to areas such as HIV health promotion and education, practice and policy.

Aboriginal women and reconciliation in Australia : communication strategies and symbolism

This thesis explores the voices of Aboriginal women in the Reconciliation movement from 1991to 2001. It charts their success and failure, the power of the media and Reconciliation symbolism. Some of these women leaders retain a passionate commitment to Reconciliation while others have totally withdrawn from the process.
