The combined effects of varying amounts of surfactant (ethylene bis-stearamide; EBS) and milling time on the compressibility of ball-milled Ti-10Nb-3Mo (wt.%) alloy were investigated. Ball milling process was performed on the elemental powders with different amounts of EBS (0-3. wt.%) for 5 and 10. h, and the ball-milled powders were consolidated by a uniaxial cold pressing in the range of 500-1100. MPa. Results indicated that the addition of surfactant in ball milling process lead to significant changes in particle packing density. The relative density was higher for powders ball milled with larger amounts of EBS and for the shorter milling time. The compressibility of powders was examined by the compaction equation developed by Panelli and Ambrosio Filho. The densification parameter (A) increased with the increasing amount of EBS, and decreased with increasing milling time.

The influence of milling time on the powder packing characteristics and compressive mechanical properties of a biomedical Ti-10Nb-3Mo alloy (wt.%) was investigated. Ball milling was performed on elemental metal powders at different milling times of 0 (blended), 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 h. This article demonstrates that despite the beneficial effects of ball milling technique in the mechanical alloying of the Ti-based alloy, the ball-milled powders synthesized at longer milling times can adversely affect the packing density and significantly diminish the compressive mechanical properties of the sintered powders. The effect of deformation parameters on the flow behavior of a Ti6Al4V alloy has been studied to understand the deformation mechanisms during hot compression. Cylindrical samples with partially equiaxed grains were deformed in the α+β phase region at different thermo-mechanical conditions. To develop components with tailored properties, the physically based Estrin and Mecking (EM) model for the work hardening/dynamic recovery combined with the Avrami equation for dynamic recrystallization was used to predict the flow stress at varying process conditions. The EM model revealed good predictability up to the peak strain, however, at strain rates below 0.01s-1, a higher B value was observed due to the reduced density of dislocation tangles. In contrast, the flow softening model revealed higher value of constants a and b at high strain rates due to the reduction in the volume fraction of dynamic recrystallization and larger peak strain. The predicted flow stress using the combined EM+Avrami model revealed good agreement with the measured flow stress resulted in very low average absolute relative error value. The microstructural analysis of the samples suggests the formation of coarse equiaxed grains together with the increased β phase fraction at low strain rate leads to a higher flow softening.

 The formation of alloy carbide cluster in ferrite was investigated via molecular dynamics simulation, which disclosed the cluster property and formation mechanism. These together provided a better fundamental understanding of the cluster formation and firm information for the evolution of cluster and precipitate in high-strength low-alloy steel.

The effect of strain rate and strain on the hot compression behavior of Ti6Al4V has been analysed to understand the microstructural evolution and restoration behavior. Cylindrical samples with partially equiaxed grains were deformed in the α+β region at different thermo-mechanical conditions. EBSD has been used to study the microstructural evolution and the flow softening mechanisms. The microstructural evolution showed a complex restoration behaviour, where both fragmentation and nucleation of new grains have been observed. The volume fraction of the equiaxed grains increased with an increase in the strain, but decreased with the strain rate. At the same time, the average grain size of the equiaxed grains decreased with an increase in both the strain and strain rate. The measured activation energy for deformation revealed a good agreement with reported values in the literature.

Ti and Ti-based alloys have unique properties such as high strength, low density and excellent corrosion resistance. These properties are essential for the manufacture of lightweight and high strength components for biomedical applications. In this paper, Ti properties such as metallurgy, mechanical properties, surface modification, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility and osseointegration in biomedical applications have been discussed. This paper also analyses the advantages and disadvantages of various Ti manufacturing processes for biomedical applications such as casting, powder metallurgy, cold and hot working, machining, laser engineering net shaping (LEN), superplastic forming, forging and ring rolling. The contributions of this research are twofold, firstly scrutinizing the behaviour of Ti and Ti-based alloys in-vivo and in-vitro experiments in biomedical applications to determine the factors leading to failure, and secondly strategies to achieve desired properties essential to improving the quality of patient outcomes after receiving surgical implants. Future research will be directed toward manufacturing of Ti for medical applications by improving the production process, for example using optimal design approaches in additive manufacturing and investigating alloys containing other materials in order to obtain better medical and mechanical characteristics.

The effects of combined silicon and molybdenum alloying additions on microalloy precipitate formation in austenite after single- and double-step deformations below the austenite no-recrystallization temperature were examined in high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels microalloyed with titanium and niobium. The precipitation sequence in austenite was evaluated following an interrupted thermomechanical processing simulation using transmission electron microscopy. Large (~ 105 nm), cuboidal titanium-rich nitride precipitates showed no evolution in size during reheating and simulated thermomechanical processing. The average size and size distribution of these precipitates were also not affected by the combined silicon and molybdenum additions or by deformation. Relatively fine (< 20 nm), irregular-shaped niobium-rich carbonitride precipitates formed in austenite during isothermal holding at 1173 K. Based upon analysis that incorporated precipitate growth and coarsening models, the combined silicon and molybdenum additions were considered to increase the diffusivity of niobium in austenite by over 30% and result in coarser precipitates at 1173 K compared to the lower alloyed steel. Deformation decreased the size of the niobium-rich carbonitride precipitates that formed in austenite.

The formation and evolution of nanoscale titanium carbide in ferrite during the early isothermal annealing process were investigated via molecular dynamics simulation. The atomic interactions of titanium and carbon atoms during the initial formation process explained the atoms aggregation and carbides formation. It was found that the aggregation and dissociation of titanium carbide occurred simultaneously, and the composition of carbide clusters varied in a wide range. A mechanism for the formation of titanium carbide clusters in ferrite was disclosed.

Aluminium-titanium (Al/Ti) composite sheets were fabricated via asymmetric accumulative roll bonding (AARB), which capitalises on additional shear to enhance plastic deformation. Multi-layers of Al alloy (AA1050) and commercially-pure Ti sheets were alternatively stacked and rolled-bonded with varied roll diameter ratios (dr) ranging from 1 to 2, for up to four passes. Annealing of selected composite sheets was subsequently carried out at 600°C for 24h to compare the rates of solid-state diffusion reactions between Al and Ti components. Mechanical tests revealed that both tensile strength and ductility of the sheets increase systematically with dr. The microstructures and the Al/Ti interfaces of the sheets were analysed in detail using TEM, SEM and FIB techniques. It is shown that not only does AARB lead to a more refined grain size of the Al matrix but also it promotes the development of a nanostructured surface layer on Ti that comprises crystallites of 50-100nm in size, which is otherwise absent in the case of symmetric ARB (i.e. dr=1). The AARB-processed sheets exhibit a larger thickness of the interdiffusion layer at the Al/Ti interfaces than the counterparts processed via the symmetric ARB route, the difference being in excess of 15%. The effects and the implications of AARB processing on mechanical behaviour and diffusion kinetics are discussed with respect to the microstructural evolutions.

Ti-Zr alloys have recently started to receive a considerable amount of attention as promising materials for dental applications. This work compares mechanical properties of a new Ti-15Zr alloy to those of commercially pure titanium Grade4 in two surface conditions - machined and modified by sand-blasting and etching (SLA). As a result of significantly smaller grain size in the initial condition (1-2µm), the strength of Ti-15Zr alloy was found to be 10-15% higher than that of Grade4 titanium without reduction in the tensile elongation or compromising the fracture toughness. The fatigue endurance limit of the alloy was increased by around 30% (560MPa vs. 435MPa and 500MPa vs. 380MPa for machined and SLA-treated surfaces, respectively). Additional implant fatigue tests showed enhanced fatigue performance of Ti-15Zr over Ti-Grade4.

Inferior surface quality is a significant problem faced by machinist. The purpose of this study is to present a surface texture analysis undertaken as part of machinability assessment of Super Austenitic Stainless Steel alloy-AL6XN. The surface texture analysis includes measuring the surface roughness and investigating the microstructural behaviour of the machined surfaces. Eight milling trials were conducted using combination of cutting parameters under wet machining. An optical profilometer (non-contact), was used to evaluate the surface texture at three positions. The surface texture was represented using the parameter, average surface roughness. Scanning Electron Microscope was utilised to inspect the machined surface microstructure and co relate with the surface roughness results. Results showed that maximum roughness values recorded at the three positions in the longitudinal direction (perpendicular to the machining grooves) were 1.21 μm (trial 1), 1.63 μm (trial 6) and 1.68 μm (trial 7) respectively whereas the roughness values were greatly reduced in the lateral direction. Also, results showed that the feed rate parameter significantly influences the roughness values compared to the other cutting parameters. The microstructure of the machined surfaces was distorted by the existence of cracks, deformed edges and bands and wear deposition due to machining process.

This research work presents a machinability study between wrought grade titanium and selective laser melted (SLM) titanium Ti-6Al-4V in a face turning operation, machined at cutting speeds between 60 and 180 m/min. Machinability characteristics such as tool wear, cutting forces, and machined surface quality were investigated. Coating delamination, adhesion, abrasion, attrition, and chipping wear mechanisms were dominant during machining of SLM Ti-6Al-4V. Maximum flank wear was found higher in machining SLM Ti-6Al-4V compared to wrought Ti-6Al-4V at all speeds. It was also found that high machining speeds lead to catastrophic failure of the cutting tool during machining of SLM Ti-6Al-4V. Cutting force was higher in machining SLM Ti-6Al-4V as compared to wrought Ti-6Al-4V for all cutting speeds due to its higher strength and hardness. Surface finish improved with the cutting speed despite the high tool wear observed at high machining speeds. Overall, machinability of SLM Ti-6Al-4V was found poor as compared to the wrought alloy.

The synthesis of Fe-TiC metal matrix composite during metal deposition with laser and arc welding techniques is of technical and economic interest for hard surfacing of engineering components. Recent studies linked the resistance to abrasive wear with the size and morphology of TiC precipitates, which are strongly dependent on the deposition conditions and, more importantly, on the alloy chemistry. In this study, the effect of silicon and manganese on the TiC precipitates was explored and different processing conditions were assessed. The characterisation included optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and microhardness testing. The results indicate that silicon and manganese can have a significant effect on TiC size and morphology. Therefore, the composition of the matrix alloy offers an effective pathway to modify the microstructure of in-situ precipitated Fe-TiC metal matrix composites. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The machining process is the most common method for metal cutting, especially in the fabrication of biomaterials and artificial implants. In modern industry, the goal of production is to manufacture products at a low cost, with the highest quality in the shortest time. The main focus of the research presented here is to provide a review of the machinability of metallic and ceramic biomaterials in traditional machining processes, such as turning, milling and grinding. Thereafter, machining strategies, machinability and surface characteristics post machining are discussed. To provide a better understanding of the machining process, various cutting tools and fluids are analysed. Finally, the current research gap and directions of prospect investigations are highlighted.
