Efficient energy management in hybrid vehicles is the key for reducing fuel consumption and emissions. To capitalize on the benefits of using PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles), an intelligent energy management system is developed and evaluated in this paper. Models of vehicle engine, air conditioning, powertrain, and hybrid electric drive system are first developed. The effect of road parameters such as bend direction and road slope angle as well as environmental factors such as wind (direction and speed) and thermal conditions are also modeled. Due to the nonlinear and complex nature of the interactions between PHEV-Environment-Driver components, a soft computing based intelligent management system is developed using three fuzzy logic controllers. The crucial fuzzy engine controller within the intelligent energy management system is made adaptive by using a hybrid multi-layer adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system with genetic algorithm optimization. For adaptive learning, a number of datasets were created for different road conditions and a hybrid learning algorithm based on the least squared error estimate using the gradient descent method was proposed. The proposed adaptive intelligent energy management system can learn while it is running and makes proper adjustments during its operation. It is shown that the proposed intelligent energy management system is improving the performance of other existing systems. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

Type reduction (TR) is one of the key components of interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems (IT2FLSs). Minimizing the computational requirements has been one of the key design criteria for developing TR algorithms. Often researchers give more rewards to computationally less expensive TR algorithms. This paper evaluates and compares five frequently used TR algorithms based on their contribution to the forecasting performance of IT2FLS models. Algorithms are judged based on the generalization power of IT2FLS models developed using them. Synthetic and real world case studies with different levels of uncertainty are considered to examine effects of TR algorithms on forecasts' accuracies. As per obtained results, Coupland-Jonh TR algorithm leads to models with a higher and more stable forecasting performance. However, there is no obvious and consistent relationship between the widths of the type reduced set and the TR algorithm. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The performances of three advanced non-linear controllers are analyzed for the optimal set point tracking of styrene free radical polymerization (FRP) in batch reactors. The three controllers are the artificial neural network-based MPC (NN-MPC), the artificial fuzzy logic controller (FLC) as well as the generic model controller (GMC). A recently developed hybrid model (Hosen et al., 2011a. Asia-Pac. J. Chem. Eng. 6(2), 274) is utilized in the control study to design and tune the proposed controllers. The optimal minimum temperature profiles are determined using the Hamiltonian maximum principle. Different types of disturbances are introduced and applied to examine the stability of controller performance. The experimental studies revealed that the performance of the NN-MPC is superior to that of FLC and GMC. © 2013 The Institution of Chemical Engineers.

Traffic signal controlling is one of the solutions to reduce the traffic congestion in cities. To set appropriate green times for traffic signal lights, we have applied Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) method in traffic signal controllers. ANFIS traffic signal controller is used for controlling traffic congestion of a single intersection with the purpose of minimizing travel delay time. The ANFIS traffic controller is an intelligent controller that learns to set an appropriate green time for each phase of traffic signal lights at the start of the phase and based on the traffic information. The controller uses genetic algorithm to tune ANFIS parameters during learning time. The results of the experiments show higher performance of the ANFIS traffic signal controller compared to three other traffic controllers that are developed as benchmarks. One of the benchmarks is GA-FLC (Araghi et al., 2014), next one is a fixed-FLC, and a fixed-time controller with three different values for green phase. Results show the higher performance of ANFIS controller.

Monotonicity with respect to all arguments is fundamental to the definition of aggregation functions. Here we study means that are not necessarily monotone. Weak monotonicity was recently proposed as a relaxation of the monotonicity condition for averaging functions. We provide results for the weak monotonicity of some importantclasses of mixture functions. With these results we are able to extend and improve the understanding of this very important class of functions.

Urban traffic as one of the most important challenges in modern city life needs practically effective and efficient solutions. Artificial intelligence methods have gained popularity for optimal traffic light control. In this paper, a review of most important works in the field of controlling traffic signal timing, in particular studies focusing on Q-learning, neural network, and fuzzy logic system are presented. As per existing literature, the intelligent methods show a higher performance compared to traditional controlling methods. However, a study that compares the performance of different learning methods is not published yet. In this paper, the aforementioned computational intelligence methods and a fixed-time method are implemented to set signals times and minimize total delays for an isolated intersection. These methods are developed and compared on a same platform. The intersection is treated as an intelligent agent that learns to propose an appropriate green time for each phase. The appropriate green time for all the intelligent controllers are estimated based on the received traffic information. A comprehensive comparison is made between the performance of Q-learning, neural network, and fuzzy logic system controller for two different scenarios. The three intelligent learning controllers present close performances with multiple replication orders in two scenarios. On average Q-learning has 66%, neural network 71%, and fuzzy logic has 74% higher performance compared to the fixed-time controller.

Traffic congestion in urban roads is one of the biggest challenges of 21 century. Despite a myriad of research work in the last two decades, optimization of traffic signals in network level is still an open research problem. This paper for the first time employs advanced cuckoo search optimization algorithm for optimally tuning parameters of intelligent controllers. Neural Network (NN) and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) are two intelligent controllers implemented in this study. For the sake of comparison, we also implement Q-learning and fixed-time controllers as benchmarks. Comprehensive simulation scenarios are designed and executed for a traffic network composed of nine four-way intersections. Obtained results for a few scenarios demonstrate the optimality of trained intelligent controllers using the cuckoo search method. The average performance of NN, ANFIS, and Q-learning controllers against the fixed-time controller are 44%, 39%, and 35%, respectively.

The success of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) deployment strongly depends on the quality of service (QoS) it provides regarding issues such as data accuracy, data aggregation delays and network lifetime maximisation. This is especially challenging in data fusion mechanisms, where a small fraction of low quality data in the fusion input may negatively impact the overall fusion result. In this paper, we present a fuzzy-based data fusion approach for WSN with the aim of increasing the QoS whilst reducing the energy consumption of the sensor network. The proposed approach is able to distinguish and aggregate only true values of the collected data as such, thus reducing the burden of processing the entire data at the base station (BS). It is also able to eliminate redundant data and consequently reduce energy consumption thus increasing the network lifetime. We studied the effectiveness of the proposed data fusion approach experimentally and compared it with two baseline approaches in terms of data collection, number of transferred data packets and energy consumption. The results of the experiments show that the proposed approach achieves better results than the baseline approaches.

Despite significant advancements in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), energy conservation in the networks remains one of the most important research challenges. One approach commonly used to prolong the network lifetime is through aggregating data at the cluster heads (CHs). However, there is possibility that the CHs may fail and function incorrectly due to a number of reasons such as power instability. During the failure, the CHs are unable to collect and transfer data correctly. This affects the performance of the WSN. Early detection of failure of CHs will reduce the data loss and provide possible minimal recovery efforts. This paper proposes a self-configurable clustering mechanism to detect the disordered CHs and replace them with other nodes. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

© 2001-2012 IEEE. Sensing coverage is a fundamental design problem in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). This is because there is always a possibility that the sensor nodes may function incorrectly due to a number of reasons, such as failure, power, or noise instability, which negatively influences the coverage of the WSNs. In order to address this problem, we propose a fuzzy-based self-healing coverage scheme for randomly deployed mobile sensor nodes. The proposed scheme determines the uncovered sensing areas and then select the best mobile nodes to be moved to minimize the coverage hole. In addition, it distributes the sensor nodes uniformly considering Euclidean distance and coverage redundancy among the mobile nodes. We have performed an extensive performance analysis of the proposed scheme. The results of the experiment show that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing approaches.

Despite several years of research, type reduction (TR) operation in interval type-2 fuzzy logic system (IT2FLS) cannot perform as fast as a type-1 defuzzifier. In particular, widely used Karnik-Mendel (KM) TR algorithm is computationally much more demanding than alternative TR approaches. In this work, a data driven framework is proposed to quickly, yet accurately, estimate the output of the KM TR algorithm using simple regression models. Comprehensive simulation performed in this study shows that the centroid end-points of KM algorithm can be approximated with a mean absolute percentage error as low as 0.4%. Also, switch point prediction accuracy can be as high as 100%. In conjunction with the fact that simple regression model can be trained with data generated using exhaustive defuzzification method, this work shows the potential of proposed method to provide highly accurate, yet extremely fast, TR approximation method. Speed of the proposed method should theoretically outperform all available TR methods while keeping the uncertainty information intact in the process.

This work presents a hybrid controller based on the combination of fuzzy logic control (FLC) mechanism and internal model-based control (IMC). Neural network-based inverse and forward models are developed for IMC. After designing the FLC and IMC independently, they are combined in parallel to produce a single control signal. Mean averaging mechanism is used to combine the prediction of both controllers. Finally, performance of the proposed hybrid controller is studied for a nonlinear numerical plant model (NNPM). Simulation result shows the proposed hybrid controller outperforms both FLC and IMC.

An optimal design of Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) traffic signal controller is presented in this paper. The proposed controller aims to adjust a set of green times for traffic lights in a single intersection with the purpose of minimizing travel delay time and traffic congestion. The ANFIS controller is trained, to learned how to set green times for each traffic phase. This intelligent controller uses the Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm to tune its parameters during the learning pried. Evaluating the performance of the proposed controller in comparison with the performance of a FLS controller (FLC) with predefined rules and membership functions, and also three fixed-Time controllers, illustrates the better performance of the optimal ANFIS controller against the other benchmark controllers.
