This paper reports the properties of fly ash based geopolymer mortars made with dune sand. The geopolymer mortars of different cation type, namely sodium based (Na), potassium based (K) and a mixed Na/K, were prepared with dune sand (DS) and river sand (RS). The corresponding geopolymer pastes were also prepared. A series of tests including compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, splitting tensile strength, microanalysis (using scanning electron microscopy), porosity (using mercury intrusion porosimetry), sorptivity and air void (using section analysis method) were carried out. The results showed a strong correlation between strength and porosity of geopolymeric materials. The addition of DS had influences on the chemical compositions and physical properties of geopolymer mortars. These influences were dependent on the type of cation. Based on the results of mechanical properties, DS can be utilised as the fine aggregate for the production of geopolymer based construction material.

Recent developments in graphene oxide fibre (GO) processing include exciting demonstrations of hand woven textile structures. However, it is uncertain whether the fibres produced can meet the processing requirements of conventional textile manufacturing. This work reports for the first time the production of highly flexible and tough GO fibres that can be knitted using textile machinery. The GO fibres are made by using a dry-jet wet-spinning method, which allows drawing of the spinning solution (the GO dispersion) in several stages of the fibre spinning process. The coagulation composition and spinning conditions are evaluated in detail, which led to the production of densely packed fibres with near-circular cross-sections and highly ordered GO domains. The results are knittable GO fibres with Young's modulus of ~7.9 GPa, tensile strength of ~135.8 MPa, breaking strain of ~5.9%, and toughness of ~5.7 MJ m(-3). The combination of suitable spinning method, coagulation composition, and spinning conditions led to GO fibres with remarkable toughness; the key factor in their successful knitting. This work highlights important progress in realising the full potential of GO fibres as a new class of textile.

Covalent/crystallite cross-linked co-network hydrogels have been prepared using epoxy and PVA through a cyclic freezing-thawing process. The PVA/epoxy hydrogels show enhanced mechanical strength and toughness. PVA/epoxy hydrogels with 4 wt% epoxy loading display maximum tensile strength and toughness of 1.1 MPa and 2838 kJ/m3 respectively. The fracture toughness of PVA/epoxy hydrogels ranges from 160 to 450 J/m2. Radius of gyration and fractal information of the hydrogels were obtained by fitting the SAXS data to the Guinier and power law models. The enhanced mechanical properties are attributed to the increase in covalent bonding and decrease in crystallite distribution with an increase in epoxy content. However a larger hysteresis is shown for PVA/epoxy hydrogels due to irreversible destruction of covalent bonds between epoxy and PVA.

In this work, compaction by warm equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) with back pressure was used to produce Ti-6Al-4V billets from both commercially pure (CP) titanium and titanium hydride (TiH 2) powders, which were mixed with pulverised binary Al-V master alloys of two distinct Al/V ratios and with elemental aluminium powder to arrive at the nominal alloy composition. It was demonstrated that the right combination of temperature, high hydrostatic pressure and plastic shear deformation permits consolidation of the powder mixture to maximum green densities of 99.26%. Moreover, after direct compaction of blended elemental powders by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) with back pressure, the sintering temperature required for chemical and microstructural homogenisation of the compacts could be reduced by 150-250°C. This was possible due to high green density, increased contact area between powder particles and the formation of fast diffusion paths associated with grain refinement by severe plastic deformation. The sintered Ti-6Al-4V billets exhibited a maximum density of 99.88%, Vickers hardness of 409-445 HV1 and ultimate tensile strength in the range of 1000-1080MPa. In contrast to findings of other authors, the use of TiH 2 powders in conjunction with ECAP processing did not bring any benefits with regard to the production of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

Aluminium-titanium (Al/Ti) composite sheets were fabricated via asymmetric accumulative roll bonding (AARB), which capitalises on additional shear to enhance plastic deformation. Multi-layers of Al alloy (AA1050) and commercially-pure Ti sheets were alternatively stacked and rolled-bonded with varied roll diameter ratios (dr) ranging from 1 to 2, for up to four passes. Annealing of selected composite sheets was subsequently carried out at 600°C for 24h to compare the rates of solid-state diffusion reactions between Al and Ti components. Mechanical tests revealed that both tensile strength and ductility of the sheets increase systematically with dr. The microstructures and the Al/Ti interfaces of the sheets were analysed in detail using TEM, SEM and FIB techniques. It is shown that not only does AARB lead to a more refined grain size of the Al matrix but also it promotes the development of a nanostructured surface layer on Ti that comprises crystallites of 50-100nm in size, which is otherwise absent in the case of symmetric ARB (i.e. dr=1). The AARB-processed sheets exhibit a larger thickness of the interdiffusion layer at the Al/Ti interfaces than the counterparts processed via the symmetric ARB route, the difference being in excess of 15%. The effects and the implications of AARB processing on mechanical behaviour and diffusion kinetics are discussed with respect to the microstructural evolutions.

This paper investigates the manufacturing of aluminium-boron carbide composites using the stir casting method. Mechanical and physical properties tests to obtain hardness, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and density are performed after solidification of specimens. The results show that hardness and tensile strength of aluminium based composite are higher than monolithic metal. Increasing the volume fraction of B4C, enhances the tensile strength and hardness of the composite; however over-loading of B4C caused particle agglomeration, rejection from molten metal and migration to slag. This phenomenon decreases the tensile strength and hardness of the aluminium based composite samples cast at 800 °C. For Al-15 vol% B4C samples, the ultimate tensile strength and Vickers hardness of the samples that were cast at 1000 °C, are the highest among all composites. To predict the mechanical properties of aluminium matrix composites, two key prediction modelling methods including Neural Network learned by Levenberg-Marquardt Algorithm (NN-LMA) and Thin Plate Spline (TPS) models are constructed based on experimental data. Although the results revealed that both mathematical models of mechanical properties of Al-B4C are reliable with a high level of accuracy, the TPS models predict the hardness and tensile strength values with less error compared to NN-LMA models.

The development of electrically conducting fibers based on known cytocompatible materials is of interest to those engaged in tissue regeneration using electrical stimulation. Herein, it is demonstrated that with the aid of rheological insights, optimized formulations of graphene containing spinnable poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) dopes can be made possible. This helps extend the general understanding of the mechanics involved in order to deliberately translate the intrinsic superior electrical and mechanical properties of solution-processed graphene into the design process and practical fiber architectural engineering. The as-produced fibers are found to exhibit excellent electrical conductivity and electrochemical performance, good mechanical properties, and cellular affinity. At the highest loading of graphene (24.3 wt%), the conductivity of as-prepared fibers is as high as 150 S m-1 (more than two orders of magnitude higher than the highest conductivity achieved for any type of nanocarbon-PLGA composite fibers) reported previously. Moreover, the Young's modulus and tensile strength of the base fiber are enhanced 647- and 59-folds, respectively, through addition of graphene.

In this work, we have proven that starch nanofibrous membranes with high tensile strength, water stability and non-cytotoxicity can be produced by electrospinning of starch solution and post-treatment with GTA in vapor phase. GTA vapor phase crosslinking plays a key role in forming water-stable nanofiber membrane and improving the mechanical properties. Comparing with non-crosslinked starch fibers, the crosslinked fibers are increased by nearly 10 times in tensile strength. The crosslinked starch fibrous membranes are non-cytotoxic. They may find applications in the fields of tissue engineering, pharmaceutical therapy and medical.

Nanofiber yarns are important building blocks for making three-dimensional nanostructures, e.g. through a knitting or weaving process, with better mechanical properties than nanofiber nonwovens and well-controlled fibrous construction. However, it still remains challenging to produce quality nanofiber yarns in a sufficient rate. In this study, we have proven that online stretching during electrospinning of nanofiber yarns can considerably improve fiber alignment and molecular orientation within the yarn and increase yarn tensile strength, but reduce fiber/yarn diameters. By compensating twist during online stretching, the device can prepare nanofiber yarns with different stretch levels, but maintaining the same twist multiplier. This allows us to examine the effect of stretching on fiber and yarn morphology. It was interesting to find that on increasing the stretching ratio from 0% to 95%, the yarn diameter reduced from 135.1 ± 20.3 μm to 46.2 ± 10.2 μm, and the fiber diameter reduced from 998 ± 141 nm to 631 ± 98 nm, whereas the yarn tensile strength increased from 48.2 ± 5.6 MPa to 127.7 ± 5.4 MPa. Such an advanced yarn electrospinning technique can produce nanofiber yarn with an overall yarn production rate as high as 10 m min−1. This may be useful for production of nanofiber yarns for various applications.

Mechanical and physical properties of polypropylene (PP)/polystyrene (PS) blend, PP/PS/polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-ran-butylene)-block-polystyrene (SEBS) ternary blend and their composites with carbon nanofibers (CNF) were investigated. Composites of ternary blend exhibited superior properties compared to those of binary blends. Mechanical performance of nanocomposites was intimately related to their phase morphology. PP/PS/SEBS/0.1 wt% CNF hybrid composites exhibited excellent impact strength (Four-fold increase compared to PP/PS blend) and ductility (12-fold increase in elongation at break, with respect to PP/PS blend). Moreover, these composites displayed good tensile strength and modulus (15% increase in Young's modulus, compared to PP/PS/SEBS blend) and are suitable for various end-use applications including automobile applications. Although crystallinity of PP phase is decreased by the incorporation of CNF, thermal stability of the composites remained almost unaffected. Contact angle measurements revealed that ternary composites exhibited maximum hydrophobicity.

The effect of oxidative stabilization and carbonization processes on the structure, mass and mechanical properties of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor fibers was analyzed. A gradual densification of the fibers occurring from mass loss, decrease in fiber diameter and increase in density were observed after stabilization at a maximum temperature of 255 °C and carbonization at a maximum temperature of 800 °C. The tensile strength and modulus of the fibers were found to decrease after stabilization but then increased after low temperature carbonization. The thermal processing of the precursor fibers affected their mode of failure after tensile loading, changing from a ductile type of failure to a brittle type. The type of failure correlated well with the crystal structure changes in the fibers. Whilst the PAN precursor fiber started to exotherm above 225 °C in air, no prominent exothermic reaction was measured in the carbonized fibers in air up to 430 °C. The aromatization index of stabilized fiber was calculated to be ∼66%, and that of carbonized fiber was ∼99%. FTIR studies indicated that the variation in the chemical structure of the fibers with the stabilization of the fibers. Radial heterogeneity in the stabilized fibers was observed however it was not promoted to the carbonized fibers. Finally, a method to calculate mass retention of PAN precursor fiber after heat treatment was developed, and the calculated percentage mass retained of the precursor fiber after oxidation and carbonization were found to be 81% and 51%, respectively. . This study proposes an effective method to calculate the percentage of mass retained by precursor fibers after stabilization and low temperature carbonization to provide a model for evaluating carbon fiber yield from a given amount of fibers.

Carbon fiber is an advanced material with high tensile strength and modulus, ideally suited for light weight applications. Carbon fiber properties are directly dependent on all aspects of production, especially the process step of thermal stabilization. Stabilization is considered to be one of the most critical process steps. Moreover, the stabilization process is the most energy consuming, time consuming and costly step. As oxidation is an exothermic process, constant airflow to uniformly remove heat from all tows across the towband is indispensable. Our approach is to develop an intelligent computational system that can construct an optimal Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solution. In this study, an electrical heater has been designed by CFD modeling and intelligently controlled. The model results show that the uniform airflow and minimum turbulence kinetic energy can be achieved by combining intelligent system technology with CFD analysis strategy.

Analysis of complex composite structures requires a fine contiguous mesh of threedimensional (3D) solid elements. The embedded element technique is a promising technique for predicting stiffness and stress. This paper presents a new method for enhancing the embedded element with continuum damage mechanics methods for predicting the evolution of damage in fiber reinforced composite structures. Comparison of the model prediction with experimental results reveals an excellent correlation between the tensile strength of quasi-isotropic laminate with an open hole. The embedded element technique allows the fiber reinforcement and matrix domains to be meshed independently and failure is evaluated separately in each domain. The enhanced embedded element approach allows the failure modes to be observed, specifically, the evolution of matrix cracking and fiber rupture. Compared to the traditional contiguous mesh finite element method, the present modelling technique demonstrates a clear advantage in predicting the experimentally observed failure modes and accurate characterisation of intralaminar fracture.

Despite great advances, it remains highly attractive but challenging to create high-performance polymeric materials combining excellent flame-retardancy and outstanding thermal, mechanical and electrical properties. We herein demonstrate a novel strategy for fabricating a multifunctional nano-additive (Br-Sb2O3@RGO) based on graphene decorated with bromine and nano-Sb2O3. Cone calorimetric tests show that incorporating 10 wt% Br-Sb2O3@RGO into thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) strikingly prolongs the time to ignition and decreases the peak heat release rate by 72%. Besides, tensile strength and Young's modulus are enhanced by 37% and 820%, respectively. Meanwhile, the electric conductibility is increased by eleven orders of magnitude relative to the TPU matrix. This work provides a promising strategy for addressing the critical bottleneck with the existing flame retardants that only enhance flame retardancy at the expense of mechanical properties of polymeric materials. As-prepared high-performance TPU composites are expected to find many applications, especially in aerospace, tissue engineering, and cables and wires.

Natural fibers are promising alternatives to synthetic fibers because of their sustainability, low environmental footprint and specific properties desirable for a wide range of technical engineering applications. The industrial implementation of fine grade natural bamboo fibers, including technical (100–200 microns) and elementary fibers (<30 microns) has been of increasing interest in recent times because these fibers offer a unique set of properties including high tensile strength, antibacterial and UV absorption. However to date, very little scientific effort has been devoted to fully understand the inter-correlation between their mechanical, physico-chemical, microstructural and morphological properties. In this paper, we report for the first time the structure–property relationship of elementary bamboo fibers. The impact of the inner microstructural organization of fibers (including the micro-fibrils angle) and physico-chemical factors such as the cellulose content and crystallinity index, on the tensile performance of these fibers is discussed in detail. This work also provides an insight into the application of bamboo fibers as natural and low-cost sorbent material for the removal of Cu2+ metal ions from model industrial wastewater. The metal ion adsorption properties of the fibers are correlated to surface energy analysis obtained from inverse gas chromatography.
