Prediction of ductile fracture in the cold forging of steel

The thesis describes the development of a model of the cold forging process that accurately predicts the initiation of ductile fracture. The effect of the deformation history of the material during multiple forming operations is considered. Both two- and three-dimensional numerical models of the forging process were combined with a ductile fracture criterion to predict the material ductility and damage distribution in the workpiece.

Fluidised bed nitrocarburising of tool steels

The work examines how ferritic nitrocarburising, a common heat treatment process for steels, can be adapted to the fluidised bed furnace. The effect of fluidising powder contamination on repeatability, composition of the reactive gas mixture, the development of nitrocarburised tool steel microstructure and resulting wear properties were investigated.

Decision support tool for production planning of a machining line

A decision support tool for production planning was developed to perform the difficult and time consuming task of allocating resources within the industrial partner's machining line, consisting of identical Computerized Numerically Controlled machines. The production-planning tool identified significant labour savings in a number of the industrial partner's production plans.

Simultaneous removal of ammonia and phosphate from wastewater by precipitation of struvite using magnesia

A thorough investigation of conditions required for the precipitation of magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate using magnesia as the source of magnesium was carried out and two computer models were used to make predictions as to optimum conditions for production of suitable crystal size and structure for a successful process. A process was developed and a bench scale model operated for a number of high ammonia wastes. Removal of ammonia was affected to levels of up to 97% with 94% ammonia removal being achievable consistently.

Study of culture and organisational change at a TAFE Institute

Barton Institute of Technical and Further Education, a metropolitan Victorian TAFE institute was chosen for the case study. The research methodology included designing and administering a survey and selecting a number of performance indicators.

Fracture analysis of spherical shells : application to cracking of macadamia nuts

The main consideration in recovering the macadamia kernal is to crack the spherical nutshell without damaging the kernal. Five mechanical cracking tools were tested, and the fracture mechanisms of nutshells, under various cracking loads, were studied. A classical theoretical approach and a numerical method were both used to investigate the influence of crack face closure on the stress intensity factor for a cracked spherical shell subjected to membrane forces and bending moments.

Inflation and economic growth : a comparative analysis of Australia and the Philippines

Investigates the effects of inflation on economic growth in Australia and the Philippines using time-series data for each country. Uses time-series quarterly data sets covering the period 1970-1995 for Australia and 1950-1994 for the Philippines. A production function approach is used. Inflation was found to have a negative and statistically significant but differing impact on growth in both countries.

Mobility and vision for mobile robots in non-deterministic, competitive environments

Develops an award winning design for an omnidirectional mobile robot that is both lightweight and extremely maneuverable. Two methods of robot vision, one using rotating lasers and a second using color video cameras were also developed and the merits of both explored.

Effects of aging bake hardenable steel in sheet metal forming

Bake hardening steels are being used as body panels in modern cars. These steels are stronger through an ageing process after baking in the paint ovens, which allows the thickness of the steel to be reduced without reducing the denting performance. The current study examined whether the steel ages at room temperature prior to forming which would deteriorate the formability. The work developed a new test and provided insight into acceptable levels of natural ageing which could be tolerated in the manufacturing process.

Development of an evaluation approach for excellence in the Australian manufacturing industry

An approach to study best practice manufacturing with particular relevance to the Australian context. Sections include the development and analysis of results from a World Class Manufacturing survey, a literature review of best practice manufacturing from Japan/USA/UK, and case studies from its application at two major business units within a large Australian manufacturing company.

Water quality modelling of the Barwon Water Supply System

An existing computer model (QUAL2E) was adapted to simulate the flow and water quality of the Barwon Water Supply System, the major water supply system for Geelong. Various water quality parameters were modelled and options reviewed for improving the water quality in this System.
