Rudd’s presidential politics vs Gillard’s Westminster wisdom : who will win out in the style battle?

It is fitting that Kevin Rudd’s official campaign for a return to the Labor leadership commenced in the United States, for his political project is one forged in the image of what many Australians imagine American presidential politics to be like: populist, and based on a direct appeal to the people in a way that bypasses parliamentary politics.

Deepening teachers' understanding of content and students' thinking : the case of Japanese lesson study in Australian primary classrooms

Japanese Lesson Study has been adapted in many countries as a platform of professional development (Groves & Doig, 2010; Lewism Perry & Hurd, 2004). One of the critical elements of Japanese Lesson Study is detailed and careful planning of the research lesson with an explicit focus on the mathematics and students' mathematical thinking (Doig, Groves, & Fujii, 2011; Murata, 2011; Watanabe, Takahashi, & Yoshida, 2008). This presentation will share some findings from a small scale research project of the implementation of Japanese Lesson Study in three Victorian primary schools in 2012.It will focus on the way in which teachers used Japanese lesson Study to plan a structured problem solving rsearch lesson on algebraic thinking for students in Year 3 and Year 4. Insights into the two teachers' planning journey and their developing understanding of anticipated student responses and the mathematics of the problem to be used in the research lesson will be discussed. Implications regarding the implementation of Japanese Lesson Study - into Australian schools for teachers' professional learning will be drawn. 

Exploring a recently developed census population model of the diversity of the sixteen psychological types in Australia

It is important for practitioners to know about the distribution of the sixteen psychological types in the country in which they operate. For instance: Are more females with Feeling preferences found in particular occupational categories? Can you make valid distinctions on the basis of the types found in sales workers compared with other categories? What are the differences in the Australian distribution of psychological types compared with the UK and USA? Participants in this workshop will be encouraged to make connections between their own experience of the diversity of types and a recently developed Australian Census Population Type Table which for the first time approaches a national probability sample. We will explore the patterns of type distribution in Australia, and compare the data with national population Type Tables developed in the UK and the USA.

Scaling-up foreign aid : will the 'big push' work?

International donors are substantially scaling-up aid programmes. At the same time, there are widespread reservations over how much aid recipient countries can use effectively. Such concerns are supported by the aid effectiveness literature which finds that there are limits to the amounts of aid recipients can efficiently absorb. This article demonstrates that a ‘big push’ in foreign aid will not lead to diminishing returns as long as donors get the inter-country allocation of aid right. This is true even if donors provide aid at levels equal to the well-known target of 0.7 per cent of their gross national income

Abolishing defensive homicide will benefit female victims and offenders

The Victorian Department of Justice has released its long-awaited review into operation of the controversial offence of defensive homicide. The Consultation Paper proposes the offence’s abolition on the basis that it is “inherently complex”, “has no clear benefit” for women who kill in the context of family violence and has been “inappropriately” used by men who kill.
