Subspecies Calidris canutus islandica of the Red Knot breeds on the arctic tundra of northeastern Canada and northern Greenland and winters along the coasts of northwestern Europe. During northward migration, it stops over in either Iceland or northern Norway. It has been assumed that it does the same during southward migration. Using ratios of stable carbon isotopes (δ 13 C) in whole blood, blood cells, and plasma, we investigated evidence for a stopover in Iceland en route from the breeding grounds to the Dutch Wadden Sea. With the expected diet (shellfish) and stopover duration at Iceland (12-15 days, maximum 17 days) and the turnover rates of blood cells (15.1 days) and plasma (6.0 days), Red Knots that stopped in Iceland should arrive with a blood (cell) δ 13 C midway between a tundra (-24.7[per thousand]) and a marine value (-14.0[per thousand]) and a plasma δ13 C approaching the marine value (-15.3[per thousand]). However, many adults arriving at the Wadden Sea had δ13 C ratios in blood (cells) and plasma below these levels, and some arrived with clear tundra signals in blood cells, suggesting that they skipped Iceland during southward migration. Surprisingly, available data suggest this also to be true for juveniles during their first southward migration. The δ 13 C signature of second-year birds confirmed that they oversummered in the Wadden Sea. Our findings contradict the largely untested idea that juvenile shorebirds make more stopovers than adults as well as the idea that the migration between the Nearctic and Europe is necessarily a two-leg process.

Bone response to a single bout of exercise can be observed with biochemical markers of bone formation and resorption. The purpose of this study was to examine the response of bone biochemical markers to a single bout of exhaustive high-impact exercise. 15 physically active young subjects volunteered to participate. The subjects performed continuous bilateral jumping with the ankle plantarflexors at 65 % of maximal ground reaction force (GRF) until exhaustion. Loading was characterized by analyzing the GRF recorded for the duration of the exercise. Venous blood samples were taken at baseline, immediately after, 2h and on day 1 and day 2 after the exercise. Procollagen type I amino terminal propeptide (P1NP, marker of bone formation) and carboxyterminal crosslinked telopeptide (CTx, marker of bone resorption) were analyzed from the blood samples. CTx increased significantly (32 %, p = 0.015) two days after the exercise and there was a tendensy towards increase seen in P1NP (p = 0.053) one day after the exercise. A significant positive correlation (r = 0.49 to 0.69, p ≤ 0.038) was observed between change in P1NP from baseline to day 1 and exercise variables (maximal slope of acceleration, body weight (BW) adjusted maximal GRF, BW adjusted GRF exercise intensity and osteogenic index). Hal2p is an enzyme that converts pAp (adenosine 3',5' bisphosphate), a product of sulfate assimilation, into 5' AMP and Pi. Overexpression of Hal2p confers lithium resistance in yeast, and its activity is inhibited by submillimolar amounts of Li+in vitro. Here we report that pAp accumulation in HAL2 mutants inhibits the 5'3' exoribonucleases Xrn1p and Rat1p. Li+ treatment of a wild-type yeast strain also inhibits the exonucleases, as a result of pAp accumulation due to inhibition of Hal2p; 5' processing of the 5.8S rRNA and snoRNAs, degradation of pre-rRNA spacer fragments and mRNA turnover are inhibited. Lithium also inhibits the activity of RNase MRP by a mechanism which is not mediated by pAp. A mutation in the RNase MRP RNA confers Li+ hypersensitivity and is synthetically lethal with mutations in either HAL2 or XRN1. We propose that Li+ toxicity in yeast is due to synthetic lethality evoked between Xrn1p and RNase MRP. Similar mechanisms may contribute to the effects of Li+ on development and in human neurobiology.

This article provides an alternative perspective on what it means to 'do school' in a disadvantaged community, particularly in the way that disadvantage is reproduced for marginalised students. It explores the mobility of teachers (temporarily) working in a small secondary school located in an economically depressed regional community in Australia, characterised by high levels of unemployment, high welfare dependency and a significant indigenous population. Like many disadvantaged schools, the school has difficulty attracting and retaining high ability teachers, instead relying on a high turnover of often-reluctant staff who are sent to (or feel compelled to) fill positions unable to be resourced through teacher choice procedures. Drawing on parent, student, and teacher interviews, we ask: how does teacher mobility in this context influence the educational opportunities of students who are 'on the margins' of school success and of the socio-economic structure? Specifically, we explore the ways that teacher mobility can reproduce disadvantage by limiting students' access to the dominant cultural capital. We argue that educational policies and politics that reward teacher mobility for moving out of these communities, work to disadvantage students. What is needed is a transformation in policies governing staff placements to establish alternatives that redefine the reward system for teachers in ways that permit these students to succeed.

Objectives: To describe the incident fracture rate in survivors of critical illness and to compare fracture risk with populationmatched control subjects.

Design: Retrospective longitudinal case– cohort study.

Setting: A tertiary adult intensive care unit in Australia. Patients: All patients ventilated admitted to intensive care and requiring mechanical ventilation for >48 hrs between January 1998 and December 2005.

Interventions: None.

Measurements and Main Results: New fractures were identified in the study population for the postintensive care unit period (intensive care unit discharge to January 2008). The incident fracture rate and age-adjusted fracture risk of the female intensive care unit population were compared with the general population adult females derived from the Geelong Osteoporosis Study. Over the 8-yr period, a total of 739 patients (258 women, 481 men) were identified. After a median follow-up of 3.7 yrs (interquartile range, 2.0–5.9 yrs) for women and 4.0 yrs (interquartile range, 2.1–6.1 yrs) for men, incident fracture rates (95% confidence interval) per 100 patient years were 3.84 (2.58 –5.09) for females 2.41 (1.73–3.09) for males. Compared with an age-matched random population-based sample of women, elderly women were at increased risk for sustaining an osteoporosisrelated fracture after critical illness (hazard ratio, 1.65; 95% confidence interval, 1.08 –2.52; p .02).

Conclusions: The increase in fracture risk observed in postintensive care unit older females suggests an association between critical illness and subsequent skeletal morbidity. The explanation for this association is not explored in this study and includes the effects of pre-existing patient factors and/or direct effects of critical illness. Prospective research evaluating risk factors, the relationship between critical illness and bone turnover, the extent and duration of bone loss, and the associated morbidity in this population is warranted.

In this population-based study, seasonal periodicity was seen with reduced serum vitamin D, increased serum PTH, and increased bone resorption in winter. This was associated with an increased proportion of falls resulting in fracture and an increased risk of wrist and hip fractures.

Introduction:
In a population of women who reside in a temperate climate and do not generally receive dietary vitamin D supplementation, we investigated whether seasonal vitamin D insufficiency is associated with increased risk of fracture.

Materials and Methods: An observational, cross-sectional, population-based study set in southeastern Australia (latitude 38–39° S). Participants were drawn from a well-defined community of 27,203 women ≥55 years old: 287 randomly selected from electoral rolls, 1635 with incident fractures, and 1358 presenting to a university hospital with falls. The main outcome measures were annual periodicities of ultraviolet radiation, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], serum parathyroid hormone (PTH), serum C-telopeptide (CTx), BMD, falls, and fractures.

Results:
Cyclic variations in serum 25(OH)D lagged 1 month behind ultraviolet radiation, peaking in summer and dipping in winter (p < 0.001). Periodicity of serum PTH was the inverse of serum 25(OH)D, with a phase shift delay of 1 month (p = 0.004). Peak serum CTx lagged peak serum PTH by 1–2 months. In late winter, a greater proportion of falls resulted in fracture (p < 0.001). Seasonal periodicity in 439 hip and 307 wrist fractures also followed a simple harmonic model (p = 0.078 and 0.002, respectively), peaking 1.5–3 months after the trough in 25(OH)D.

Conclusions:
A fall in 25(OH)D in winter is accompanied by increases in (1) PTH levels, (2) bone resorption, (3) the proportion of falls resulting in fracture, and (4) the frequency of hip and wrist fracture. Whether vitamin D supplementation in winter can reduce the population burden of fractures requires further investigation.

Background: There is evidence to suggest that β-blockers used in the management of cardiovascular disease may also modulate bone metabolism and reduce bone fragility.

Aim: The study aimed to determine the association between β-blocker use, serum markers of bone turnover and bone loss in early postmenopausal women.

Subjects and methods: In this observational study, we evaluated β-blocker exposure in association with serum levels of C-telopeptide and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, and rates of bone loss. β-blocker use, concomitant therapy and lifestyle were documented for 197 women (50–59 years), 175 of whom had changes in whole body bone mineral density monitored over a 2–year period.

Results: Twenty-four β-blocker users were identified at baseline. After controlling for concomitant use of hormone therapy, C-telopeptide levels were 6.7% lower among β-blocker users (p = 0.02). No association was detected between bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and β-blocker use. Analysis of 15 β-blocker users and 152 non-users identified 2 years post-baseline showed that levels of C-telopeptide but not bone-specific alkaline phosphatase were predictors of adjusted rates of bone loss (p = 0.008 and p>0.05, respectively). Adjusted rates of bone loss were −0.001 ± 0.026 g cm−2 over 2 years for the users and −0.004 ± 0.025 g cm−2 over 2 years for non-users, but this difference was not significant.

Conclusion: β-blockers might suppress bone resorption with relative preservation of bone formation. A study with greater power is required to determine whether β-blocker use is associated with lower rates of bone loss.

Although organizational fit is strongly linked to important psychological outcomes such as motivation, satisfaction, turnover and performance, there is still a lot of confusion about definitions and conceptualizations of the construct. One reason for this is that fit researchers have almost exclusively conducted theory-driven nomothetic studies that have utilized varying approaches to the term. In this paper, we call for exploratory research that listens to how workers construct their own sense of fit and suggest that researchers should adopt idiographic data gathering techniques, coupled with nomothetic analysis tools, to do so. To enable this, we explain how fit researchers might use causal maps and thereby develop a stronger understanding of organizational fit that is grounded in how people conceive it.

Hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis activation is a hallmark of the stress response. In the case of physical stressors, there is considerable evidence that medullary catecholamine neurones are critical to the activation of the paraventricular nucleus corticotropin-releasing factor cells that constitute the apex of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis. In contrast, it has been thought that hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis responses to emotional stressors do not involve brainstem neurones. To investigate this issue we have mapped patterns of restraint-induced neuronal c-fos expression in intact animals and in animals prepared with either paraventricular nucleus-directed injections of a retrograde tracer, lesions of paraventricular nucleus catecholamine terminals, or lesions of the medulla corresponding to the A1 or A2 noradrenergic cell groups. Restraint-induced patterns of neuronal activation within the medulla of intact animals were very similar to those previously reported in response to physical stressors, including the fact that most stressor-responsive, paraventricular nucleus-projecting cells were certainly catecholaminergic and probably noradrenergic. Despite this, the destruction of paraventricular nucleus catecholamine terminals with 6-hydroxydopamine did not alter corticotropin-releasing factor cell responses to restraint. However, animals with ibotenic acid lesions encompassing either the A1 or A2 noradrenergic cell groups displayed significantly suppressed corticotropin-releasing factor cell responses to restraint. Notably, these medullary lesions also suppressed neuronal responses in the medial amygdala, an area that is now considered critical to hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis responses to emotional stressors and that is also known to display a significant increase in noradrenaline turnover during restraint.

We conclude that medullary neurones influence corticotropin-releasing factor cell responses to emotional stressors via a multisynaptic pathway that may involve a noradrenergic input to the medial amygdala. These results overturn the idea that hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis response to emotional stressors can occur independently of the brainstem.

Purpose of the Study: The aged care industry experiences high rates of staff turnover. Staff turnover has significant implications for the quality of care provided to care recipients and the financial costs to care agencies. In this study, we applied a model of intention to quit to identify the contextual and personal factors that shape aged care staff’s intention to quit.

Design and Methods:
A sample of 208 aged care staff, including nurses, personal care assistants, allied health professionals, and managers completed a self-report questionnaire. The questionnaire assessed intention to quit, organizational commitment, job satisfaction, self-esteem, stressors, stress, and supervisor support.

Results: The findings largely supported the model. Specifically, job commitment, job satisfaction, and work stressors directly influenced intentions to quit, although work stressors and supervisor support demonstrated numerous indirect associations on quitting intentions.

Implications: The findings suggest that aged care service providers can modify aged care workers’ intentions to quit by reducing job stressors and increasing supervisor support.

To survive within its host erythrocyte, Plasmodium falciparum must export hundreds of proteins across both its parasite plasma membrane and surrounding parasitophorous vacuole membrane, most of which are likely to use a protein complex known as PTEX (Plasmodium translocon of exported proteins). PTEX is a putative protein trafficking machinery responsible for the export of hundreds of proteins across the parasitophorous vacuole membrane and into the human host cell. Five proteins are known to comprise the PTEX complex, and in this study, three of the major stoichiometric components are investigated including HSP101 (a AAA+ ATPase), a protein of no known function termed PTEX150, and the apparent membrane component EXP2. We show that these proteins are synthesized in the preceding schizont stage (PTEX150 and HSP101) or even earlier in the life cycle (EXP2), and before invasion these components reside within the dense granules of invasive merozoites. From these apical organelles, the protein complex is released into the host cell where it resides with little turnover in the parasitophorous vacuole membrane for most of the remainder of the following cell cycle. At this membrane, PTEX is arranged in a stable macromolecular complex of >1230 kDa that includes an ∼600-kDa apparently homo-oligomeric complex of EXP2 that can be separated from the remainder of the PTEX complex using non-ionic detergents. Two different biochemical methods undertaken here suggest that PTEX components associate as EXP2-PTEX150-HSP101, with EXP2 associating with the vacuolar membrane. Collectively, these data support the hypothesis that EXP2 oligomerizes and potentially forms the putative membrane-spanning pore to which the remainder of the PTEX complex is attached.

A novel C2-symmetrical bisprolinamide organocatalyst was synthesised and used to facilitate asymmetric direct aldol reactions in a water emulsion. Reactions were performed at room temperature with very low catalyst loadings (12.5 mol%) without the required use of additives, co-catalysts or extended reaction times (24 h). This catalyst system was then used with a variety of aldehyde substrates showing good reaction generality for benzaldehydes with cyclohexanone (dr range 77/23 to >99/1, anti/syn; ee range 33% to >99%) and moderate scope with cyclopentanone (dr range 45/55 to 76/24, anti/syn; ee range 14% to 68%). Ultra-low catalysts loadings (0.1 and 0.05 mol%) were also investigated demonstrating catalyst turnover numbers in the order of 1000.

Purpose - The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationships between elements of the psychological contract (i.e., type and fulfilment) and an employee’s intention to leave (ITL) their current organisation. The role of careerism as a potential mediating and moderating variable is also explored.

Design/methodology/approach - Allied Health Professionals (N=202) completed a questionnaire containing measures of the psychological contract, careerism and ITL.

Findings - As predicted, path analyses conducted via structural equation modelling demonstrated that careerism partially mediates the relationship between contract types and ITL. These findings suggest that employees with transactional contracts are more careerist, resulting in higher ITL, while employees with relational contracts are less careerist, resulting in lower ITL. Contrary to expectation, a hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed that careerism failed to moderate the relationship between perceived contract fulfillment and ITL. However, a strong positive association between contract fulfillment and ITL was found.

Research limitations/implications - The data were collected cross-sectionally, which limits the ability to make causal inferences.

Practical implications - Results were consistent with the proposition that contract type and fulfillment predict employee ITL. It appears that employees with relational contracts are more likely to remain with their organization on a longer-term basis, compared to employees with transactional contracts, due to differences in career motives. Organizational awareness and understanding of employee psychological contracts and career motives is needed.

Originality/value - This paper provides new theoretical and practical insights on how psychological contracts and careerism can influence Intention to leave among Allied Health Professionals.

We present evidence that oxygen consumption (VO2 ) is oxygen partial pressure (PO2) dependent in striated muscles and PO2 -independent in the vasculature in representatives of three craniate taxa: two teleost fish, a hagfish and a rat. Blood vessel VO2 displayed varying degrees of independence in a PO2 range of 15–95 mmHg, while VO2 by striated muscle tissue slices from all species related linearly to PO2 between 0 and 125 mmHg, despite VO2 rates varying greatly between species and muscle type. In salmon red muscle, lactate concentrations fell in slices incubated at a PO2 of either 30 or 100 mmHg, suggesting aerobic rather than anaerobic metabolism. Consistent with this finding, potential energy, a proxy of ATP turnover, was PO2 -dependent. Our data suggest that the reduction in VO2 with falling PO2 results in a decrease in ATP demand, suggesting that the hypoxic signal is sensed and cellular changes effected. Viability and diffusion limitation of the preparations were investigated using salmon cardiac and skeletal muscles. Following the initial PO2 depletion, reoxygenation of the Ringer bathing salmon cardiac muscle resulted in VO2s that was unchanged from the first run. VO2 increased in all muscles uncoupled with p-trifluoromethoxylphenyl-hydrazone (FCCP) and 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP). Mitochondrial succinate dehydrogenase activity, quantified by reduction of 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) to formazan, was constant over the course of the experiment. These three findings indicate that the tissues remained viable over time and ruled out diffusion-limitation as a constraint on VO2.

Following the work of Easley et al. (2002) in documenting the effect of private information on cross-sectional stock returns, we examine the relationship between a firm’s fundamental characteristics and its probability of information-based trading (PIN). We find that asset turnover and dividend yields are important firm characteristics that influence a firm’s PIN. The findings also offer an alternative explanation as to why firm characteristics are informative about asset prices.
