Corrosion protection by lanthanum hydroxy cinnamate (La(4OH-cin)3) in a polyurethane based varnish coating for mild steelhas been investigated. Filiform scribe tests, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) and potentiodynamic polarisation (PP)techniques have been powerful tools to better understand the corrosion process at defects and under the coating. Filiform scribetests showed that La(4OH-cin)3, as a pigment in a coating, inhibited the initiation and propagation of both delamination and filiformcorrosion (FFC) on coated steel. The PP experiments provided an insight into the fundamental mechanism of FFC. The resultssuggest that La(4OH-cin)3 behaves as a mixed inhibitor and stifles the initiation and propagation of FFC. In this paper, the theory ofdelamination leading to FFC and the likely mechanism of inhibition by the La(4OH-cin)3 will be discussed.

Purpose - The objective of this work was to develop practical experimental techniques for monitoring corrosion in "difficult-to-test" conditions such as corrosion under insulation (CUI).

Design/methodology/approach - An electrochemically integrated multi-electrode array namely the wire beam electrode (WBE) method has been used in combination with noise signature analysis for the first time to monitor the penetration of corrosive species under simulated corrosion-under-insulation conditions. Corrosion of aluminium exposed under insulation materials such as rock wool, glass wool, cotton wool and tissue paper has been successfully monitored.

Findings - A typical potential noise signature of a major potential jump from AA1100 WBE was observed which corresponded to the corrosive species reaching the WBE surface in WBE current distribution map. A good correlation between the galvanic current maps and the corroded surface was also observed.

Originality/value - The preliminary results suggest that the proposed novel electrochemical method is capable of monitoring CUI.

Purpose – To provide a summary of research work carried out mainly in the authors' group for evaluating various protective coatings including rustproofing oils, and also for studying corrosion inhibitors using the wire beam electrode (WBE) method.

Design/methodology/approach – A range of published papers published during the past 15 years was summarised and reviewed. Recent research work in the authors' group was also included, which involved the combined use of the WBE with electrochemical noise analysis and the scanning reference electrode technique.

Findings – The WBE method has been developed into a very useful tool of evaluating the performance of coatings and inhibitors. In particular, The WBE is uniquely applicable for determining the performance of coatings and inhibitors to control localised corrosion.

Research limitations/implications – Focusing mainly on recent research.

Practical implications – A useful source of information for researchers and graduate students working in the areas of organic coating and inhibitor research.

Originality/value – The first summary or review on this research topic.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to study and evaluate commercial batch treatment inhibitors which are used for protecting oil wells, gas wells, and pipelines from CO2 corrosion, focusing on the evaluation of inhibitor film persistency. It was found that theformation and deterioration of batch treatment inhibitor films were accompanied by typical impedance spectral changes. During the formation of inhibitor films, electrode impedance showed a rapid increase and the Bode phase angle plots also showed a sudden change. Thus, the formation of inhibitor film was a very fast process. During the deterioration of inhibitor films, electrode impedance showed a gradual decrease and the Bode phase angle plots showed changes which characterised the three stages of the inhibitor film deterioration process. The relationships between EIS and corrosion rate are discussed, including comparisons with weight loss measurements. Based on the experimental findings in the present work, a method is suggested for estimating the persistency of inhibitor films by monitoring the characteristic changes in the Bode phase angle plots and by measuring electrochemical charge transfer resistance at the second and third stages of the inhibitor film deterioration process.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to study carbon dioxide (CO2) corrosion product scales and their effects on further CO2 corrosion. Objectives were to determine the suitability of EIS for studying corrosion scales and to investigate the influence of environmental factors on scale formation. EIS provided useful information about protective abilities and electrochemical properties of corrosion scales. CO2 corrosion scales formed at high-temperature and pressure provided better protection than those formed at low-temperature and pressure. The level of protection of the scale formed at higher temperature and pressure increased with exposure time. EIS results were compared with coupon weight-loss measurements. Scales were analyzed using a combination of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, x-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron microscopy.

A new electrochemical method was developed to investigate crevice corrosion and its inhibitors. A wire beam electrode was used to allow electrochemical parameters to be measured directly from the crevice area. As an example, oil stain was investigated using this method.
