The primary objective of this research is to provide a framework for industrial and economic development with respect to Brunei Darussalam. The study is both novel and unique as it is potentially the most comprehensive holistic study performed to date with respect to industrial and economic development in Brunei.

In July 2009, a team of 38 researchers carried out the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) survey in the Kingdom of Tonga. The GEM survey estimates the proportion of the general population involved in business start-ups and new firm creation. This paper describes not the results of the survey but rather the methodology that was employed. Because Tonga is spread out over a vast swath of the Pacific Ocean, the team faced serious challenges in terms of survey design, field work, logistiCS, and quality control. To meet the standards of rigour, we designed a 'ruggedised method' for measuring entrepreneurial activity. The present report will assist other teams in measuring entrepreneurial activity in developing countries. We provide practical guidelines for the improvement of the efficiency of the survey when it is repeated elsewhere, This case is accompanied by a 24- minute video which illustrates the major paints of the paper.

There is a large literature that tests the univariate time series properties of the real output series following the seminal work of Nelson and Plosser (1982). Whether or not real output is characterized by a unit root process has important implications. A unit root in real output, for instance, is inconsistent with the notion that business cycles are stationary fluctuations around a deterministic trend. In this paper, we investigate the univariate time series properties of real output for 79 developing countries using the conventional augmented Dickey and Fuller (1979) unit root test, the Zivot and Andrews’ (1992) one structural break unit root test, and the Lumsdaine and Papell (1997) two structural breaks unit root test. Our main finding is that, for 40 countries, real output is stationary around a trend. This indicates that business cycles are stationary fluctuations around a deterministic trend for only 51% of the developing countries in our sample.

This thesis examined the impact of macro environment factors on high-potential entrepreneurial venturing, culminating in a comprehensive, testable framework (derived from both extant theory and original empirical investigation) for analyzing and improving the capacity of any developing nation to become a dynamic entrepreneurial environment conducive to high-potential new venture creation.
