This paper derives from the authors’ experiences of the development of a successful science specialism, implemented in a large primary school in regional Victoria, Australia, since 2012. We discuss how diverse resources – people, spaces, equipment, materials and ideas – were brought together to support a science specialism that focuses on positioning students as burgeoning experts; leveraging and enhancing connections with community; and, developing positive dispositions towards science and the environment. Our discussion is supported by illustrative excerpts from interviews, focus groups and meetings with school and university staff members. We conclude by identifying characteristics that might suggest principles for success in other contexts.

AIM: There is growing support for the role of inflammation and oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). This has led to the development of novel strategies targeting inflammation in the treatment of depression. Rosuvastatin and aspirin have well-documented, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The aim of the Youth Depression Alleviation: Augmentation with an anti-inflammatory agent (YoDA-A) study is to determine whether individuals receiving adjunctive anti-inflammatory agents, aspirin and rosuvastatin experience a reduction in the severity of MDD compared with individuals receiving placebo. METHODS: YoDA-A is a 12-week triple-blind, randomized controlled trial funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia. Participants aged 15-25, with moderate-to-severe MDD, are allocated to receive either 10 mg/day rosuvastatin, 100 mg/day aspirin, or placebo, in addition to treatment as usual. Participants are assessed at baseline and at weeks 4, 8, 12 and 26. The primary outcome is change in the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) from baseline to week 12. RESULTS: The study is planned to be completed in 2017. At date of publication, 85 participants have been recruited. CONCLUSION: Timely and targeted intervention for youth MDD is crucial. Given the paucity of new agents to treat youth MDD, adjunctive trials are not only pragmatic and 'real-world', but additionally aim to target shortfalls in conventional medications. This study has the potential to first provide two new adjunctive treatment options for youth MDD; aspirin and rosuvastatin. Second, this study will serve as proof of principle of the role of inflammation in MDD.

Superhydrophobic cotton fabrics with a very low contact angle hysteresis were prepared using a single-pot coating solution comprising SU-8 (a negative photoresist), a fluorinated alkyl silane and silica nanoparticles. The fabric was treated using a dip-coating technique and subsequently cured under UV light. The coated fabric showed excellent superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle as high as 163° and a sliding angle as low as 2°. The coating was durable enough to withstand 100 laundry cycles. It also had excellent stability against long immersion times in organic solvents, and acid and base solutions.

INTRODUCTION: Early childhood is an important period for establishing behaviours that will affect weight gain and health across the life course. Early feeding choices, including breast and/or formula, timing of introduction of solids, physical activity and electronic media use among infants and young children are considered likely determinants of childhood obesity. Parents play a primary role in shaping these behaviours through parental modelling, feeding styles, and the food and physical activity environments provided. Children from low socio-economic backgrounds have higher rates of obesity, making early intervention particularly important. However, such families are often more difficult to reach and may be less likely to participate in traditional programs that support healthy behaviours. Parents across all socio-demographic groups frequently access primary health care (PHC) services, including nurses in community health services and general medical practices, providing unparalleled opportunity for engagement to influence family behaviours. One emerging and promising area that might maximise engagement at a low cost is the provision of support for healthy parenting through electronic media such as the Internet or smart phones. The Growing healthy study explores the feasibility of delivering such support via primary health care services.

METHODS: This paper describes the Growing healthy study, a non-randomised quasi experimental study examining the feasibility of an intervention delivered via a smartphone app (or website) for parents living in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas, for promoting infant feeding and parenting behaviours that promote healthy rather than excessive weight gain. Participants will be recruited via their primary health care practitioner and followed until their infant is 9 months old. Data will be collected via web-based questionnaires and the data collected inherently by the app itself.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This study received approval from the University of Technology Sydney Ethics committee and will be disseminated via peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.

The narratives in this chapter perhaps demonstrate the greatest variety in terms of work presented in this book. Included are the growers — those who produce items of need; those who make and repair; and those who transport. In this chapter we cover the spectrum of tangible work since the taming of the land and time (the farmers and the horolo-gist) to new occupations (software engineer). The occupations depicted represent both the rise of new kinds of work and the decline of some others. We have included two similar jobs (that of farming), yet each offers a unique insight into the world of agriculture and its associated challenges and stresses.

Chitosan is a natural and non-toxic polymer which can be used as a multifunctional, e.g. antimicrobial or anti-wrinkle, agent on cotton fabrics. However, due to the lack of strong bonding forces between two polysaccharides, chitosan coating on cotton has poor durability. To provide efficient and irreversible chitosan adsorption on cotton substrate, it is required to build appropriate binding sites and to activate the substrate material properly. For this purpose, plasma treatment can be a promising method as it can activate the surface of the cotton fabric and improve the adsorption of chemicals in a completely harmless procedure. In this study, we investigated the effect of atmospheric pressure plasma treatment on adsorption of chitosan onto the cotton fabric. The purpose of the study was to investigate to which extent adsorption of chitosan on cotton can be improved by helium plasma treatment. Fibre surface and adsorption of chitosan were characterized by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Changes in hydrophobicity of fabric`s surface and fibre morphology were evaluated using contact angle method and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The results from XPS showed an increase in the C=O bonds on cotton fabrics oxydised by helium plasma treatmnets, confirming the formation of aldehyde groups in cellulose. The characteristic absorbance band of chitosan, amide II (N-H bending vibration) showed an enlargement for all fabrics treated with helium and chitosan, as assesed by FTIR. The absorbance peaks of CH2 stretching vibrations, which confirm chitosan existence, were stronger for all treated fabrics compared to the untreated control. While the plasma only treated fabric surface was very hydrophilic, the surface became hydrophobic after chitosan coating.
