Much time and effort has gone into trying to demonstrate an empirical link between research activity and teaching performance. In general, the correlations between these factors have been shown to be low. This paper argues that the attempt to find such a link will always be confounded by different conceptions of the two enterprises. The debate about the relationships between teaching and research as presently conceived is not fruitful. It there is a link between the two it operates through that which teaching and research have in common; both are concerned with the act of learning, though in different contexts. Greater emphasis needs to be placed on the ways in which knowledge is generated and communicated. Those aspects of teaching which lead to learning and the learning which occurs through research provide the vital link. This is important if the debate is to progress beyond a political defence of the status quo and be of practical use to considerations of whether, in higher education, teaching without research is to be encouraged.

It remains a huge challenge to create advanced polymeric materials combining high strength, great toughness, and biodegradability so far. Despite enhanced strength and stiffness, biomimetic materials and polymer nanocomposites suffer notably reduced extensibility and toughness when compared to polymer bulk. Silk displays superior strength and toughness via hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) assembly, while cuticles of mussels gain high hardness and toughness via metal complexation cross-linking. Here, we propose a H-bonds cross-linking strategy that can simultaneously strikingly enhance strength, modulus, toughness, and hardness relative to polymer bulk. The H-bond cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) exhibits high yield strength (140 MPa), reduced modulus (22.5 GPa) in nanoindention tests, hardness (0.5 GPa), and great extensibility (40%). More importantly, there exist semiquantitive linear relationships between the number of effective H-bond and macroscale properties. This work suggests a promising methodology of designing advanced materials with exceptional mechanical by adding low amounts (1.0 wt %) of small molecules multiamines serving as H-bond cross-linkers.

Teleoperation is integral to society's uptake of modern robotic systems. Given the wide array of readily available robots, ranging from simple mobile platforms and UAVs to advanced humanoid robots such as ASIMO and PR2, teleoperation is required in many different forms. The recent advances in virtual reality systems, interactive input controls and even haptic devices facilitate a wide range of new approaches to teleoperation control. This paper considers a dynamic user interface for improving the operator's ability to teleoperate heterogeneous robotic systems in dynamic and challenging environments. In order to achieve the proposed dynamic user interface the robot(s) comprising the heterogeneous robotic system and their active components need to be categorized. The recent uptake of ROS means that many robots are now represented within the standardized Unified Robot Descriptive Format (URDF), and this paper proposes a method for searching the URDF for active serial chains in individual robot systems. Results demonstrate the ability of the approach to determine active serial chains and associated kinematic information for the Baxter torso robot.

The relevance of drug and alcohol involvement to sentencing law and practice is one of the most perplexing and unsettled areas of sentencing law and practice.1 It is also one of the most important issues in the criminal justice system. Most crimes are committed by offenders who are substance involved, and nearly half of all crimes that are committed are done so by offenders who are intoxicated at the time of the offense. Substance involved individuals are grossly over-represented in the criminal courts. Addiction and intoxication impair sound judgment, and hence, it intuitively appears that intoxicated offenders are less culpable for their crimes. Moreover, there is often a sense that addiction and intoxication causes aberrant behavior and that curing the substance involvement will lead to more prudent (law-abiding) conduct.

Due to the potential important information in real world networks, link prediction has become an interesting focus of different branches of science. Nevertheless, in "big data" era, link prediction faces significant challenges, such as how to predict the massive data efficiently and accurately. In this paper, we propose two novel node-coupling clustering approaches and their extensions for link prediction, which combine the coupling degrees of the common neighbor nodes of a predicted node-pair with cluster geometries of nodes. We then present an experimental evaluation to compare the prediction accuracy and effectiveness between our approaches and the representative existing methods on two synthetic datasets and six real world datasets. The experimental results show our approaches outperform the existing methods.

This paper proposes a power balancing strategy for dispatchable and non-dispatchable sources in an islanded microgrid. This control method enables energy storage system that employs a voltage-band at a dc busbar to maintain grid voltage stability for short period disturbances in a network. This voltage-band, applied to obtain maximum benefit from the storage system, depends on a storage capacity feature to avoid voltage limit violation. In addition, a linear quadratic regulator is employed as a voltage controller to track the reference grid voltage that is obtained from the proposed P/V droop control strategy. In the proposed control method, a long-term energy storage element, such as a battery, also can be used to regulate voltage and deliver insufficient power in a microgrid. It is concluded that the proposed control method exhibits an effective result in voltage and power issue during transient.

The conservation of migratory species represents a major challenge, as they use multiple sites, all contributing in varying degrees in sustaining high survival and reproductive success. There is particular concern for shorebirds of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway (EAAF), where declining numbers of migratory species have mostly been attributed to habitat loss along the East Asian coast. Using a stochastic dynamic programming migration model, we assessed the effect of habitat degradation scenarios along the EAAF on migration behaviour, survival and reproductive success of a long-distance migrating shorebird, the Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres). Following manipulation of habitat quality through changes in intake rate, we found that changes on the wintering (major non-breeding) ground in South Australia had the highest negative effect on reproductive success and survival. We also identified Taiwan and the Yellow Sea as sites with high importance for reproductive success. Although habitats along the East Asian coastline are currently most threatened from a range of global change processes, we highlight the importance of conserving high-quality shorebird wintering habitat in Australia. This may be of notable importance to trans-equatorial migratory shorebirds, which often make a long non-stop flight from their wintering grounds in order to skip low-latitude sites that typically provide little food.

Combining goal-oriented and use case modeling has been shown as an effective method of requirements engineering. To ensure the quality of such modeled artifacts, a conceptual foundation is needed to govern the process of determining what types of artifacts to be modeled, and how they should be specified and analyzed for 3Cs problems (completeness, consistency and correctness). However, such a foundation is missing in current goal-use case integration approaches. In this paper, we present GUIMeta, a meta-model, to address this problem. GUIMeta consists of three layers. The artifact layer defines the semantics and classification of artifacts and their relationships. The specification layer offers specification rules for each artifact class. The ontology layer allows semantics to be integrated into the entire model. Our promising evaluation shows the suitability of GUIMeta in modeling goals and use cases.

This article reports on and discusses the findings of an investigationcarried out to explore the expectations of an English language enhancementcourse (ELEC) held by a group of undergraduate students at anAustralian university. For the study, a mixed-methods approach was utilised, with two instruments: a survey with a combination of closed- andopen-ended questions and semi-structured interviews. The research wasguided by the following three questions: (1) What do the students expectto learn on the course? (2) How are they developing their expectations?(3) Are the students’ expectations being met? The literature concerningstudent expectations foregrounds the complexity and multi-faceted natureof the concept, the satisfaction of which can impact on student engagement, satisfaction, performance, retention and attrition. Findings showthat the participants’ expectations of the course content and teachingstaff were largely met; nonetheless, a lack of class attendance was notedthroughout. Expectations were reported to have been developed largelythrough consultation with previous students of the course (43 per cent)and information materials provided by the university (42 per cent). Thearticle concludes with a discussion regarding the implications of thefindings for universities and education providers both in Australia andabroad.
