2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) aerobic degrading granules were successfully developed in the sequencing batch airlift reactor. The key strategy used in cultivation of the granules was dosing glucose and acetate as co-substrates. After granulation, average concentrations of 2,4,6-TCP and COD in the effluent were less than 8mgL-1 and 59mgL-1, respectively. The removal efficiencies of 2,4,6-TCP and COD were above 93% and 90%, respectively. The specific degradation rate of 2,4,6-TCP peaked at 61mg 2,4,6-TCP gVSS-1h-1 when inoculated at the concentration of 400mgL-1. The extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) contents of the 2,4,6-TCP aerobic degrading granules were decreased compared with the contents in seed sludge. Two peaks attributed to the protein-like fluorophores were identified by three-dimensional excitation emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectra. The decrease of fluorescence parameters, e.g., peak locations, intensities, indicated quenching effect of 2,4,6-TCP on the EPS fluorescence. Meanwhile, the shift of peak position indicated chemical changes of the EPS.

This thesis focused on the use of enzyme "lipase" rather than chemicals to produce concentrates of omega-3 fatty acids. These enzymatic techniques are cheaper, greener and environmentally friendly.

Developing water quality guidelines for Antarctic marine environments requires understanding the sensitivity of local biota to contaminant exposure. Antarctic invertebrates have shown slower contaminant responses in previous experiments compared to temperate and tropical species in standard toxicity tests. Consequently, test methods which take into account environmental conditions and biological characteristics of cold climate species need to be developed. This study investigated the effects of five metals on the survival of a common Antarctic amphipod, Orchomenella pinguides. Multiple observations assessing mortality to metal exposure were made over the 30 days exposure period. Traditional toxicity tests with quantal data sets are analysed using methods such as maximum likelihood regression (probit analysis) and Spearman–Kärber which treat individual time period endpoints independently. A new statistical model was developed to integrate the time-series concentration–response data obtained in this study. Grouped survival data were modelled using a generalized additive mixed model (GAMM) which incorporates all the data obtained from multiple observation times to derive time integrated point estimates. The sensitivity of the amphipod, O. pinguides, to metals increased with increasing exposure time. Response times varied for different metals with amphipods responding faster to copper than to cadmium, lead or zinc. As indicated by 30 days lethal concentration (LC50) estimates, copper was the most toxic metal (31 µg/L), followed by cadmium (168 µg/L), lead (256 µg/L) and zinc (822 µg/L). Nickel exposure (up to 1.12 mg/L) did not affect amphipod survival. Using longer exposure durations and utilising the GAMM model provides an improved methodology for assessing sensitivities of slow responding Antarctic marine invertebrates to contaminants.

While monethanolamine has shown great potential as a solvent for the capture of carbon dioxide, impurities can build within the solution over time, leading to increased viscosity and corrosivity. Classically, these impurities are removed by a combination of neutralization and either thermal reclamation, ion exchange or electrodialysis. In this work, we evaluate the use of nanofiltration to concentrate the heat stable salts within the solution prior to such reclamation. This allows the recirculating solvent to operate with low concentrations of these impurities, while providing a low volume, concentrated solution for reclamation. Results show that nanofiltration can reject greater than 80% of the heat stable anions, while allowing the monoethanolamine to permeate through the membrane, for return to the process. Rejection of the MEA itself is less than 7%. The nanofiltration operation is only effective on lean solvent with CO2 loadings of less than 0.2 and neutralization would be required upstream to deprotonate the amine. The two membranes tested (Koch MPF-34 and MPF-36) appeared stable to exposure to the solvent for over four months.

The deformation behaviour of two single phase binary alloys, Mg-5Y and Mg-10Y, have been examined. In compression, two twin types were observed, the common {101¯2} twin as well as the less common {112¯1} extension twin. It is shown that the {112¯1} twin is much less sensitive to solute concentration than the {101¯2} twin, and it is suggested that the simple atomic shuffle of the {112¯1} twin reduces the solute strengthening imparted by Y additions. The common {101¯2} twin showed significant hardening as a result of alloying with Y. An analysis of solute behaviour has indicated that of the four chemical parameters investigated, i.e. atomic size, shear modulus, electronegativity and solute distribution, it appears to be the larger atomic radius of Y compared to Mg that increases the stress required to activate the {101¯2} twin. It is suggested that the large atomic radius inhibits the atomic shuffling process which accompanies the twinning shear in this twin type.
