Boron nitride nanotubes were functionalized with microperoxidase-11 in aqueous media, showing improved catalytic performance due to a strong electron coupling between the active centre of microperoxidase-11 and boron nitride nanotubes.

Antiwetting BNNT films have been achieved by milling-ink method. Superhydrophobic (CA <5°) are demonstrated on films with stainless steel as substrate. The high density and purity are confirmed by EDX and NEXAFS. There are only a few oxygen point defects in the form of nitrogen vacancies due to ink and annealing process in air.

Plasma, generated in liquid at atmospheric pressure by a nanosecond pulsed voltage, was used to fabricate hybrid structures from boron nitride nanotubes and gold nanoparticles in deionized water. The pH was greatly reduced, conductivity was significantly increased, and concentrations of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in the water were increased by the plasma treatment. The treatment reduced the length of the nanotubes, giving more individual cuplike structures, and introduced functional groups onto the surface. Gold nanoparticles were successively assembled onto the functionalized surfaces. The reactive species from the liquid plasma along with the nanosecond pulsed electric field seem to play a role in the shortening and functionalization of the nanotubes and the assembly of gold nanoparticles. The potential for targeted drug delivery was tested in a preliminary investigation using doxorubicin-loaded plasma-treated nanotubes which were effective at killing ∼99% of prostate cancer cells.

Effective oil/water separation and removal of organic molecules from water are of worldwide importance for water source protection. Multifunctional sorbent materials with excellent sorption capacity, stability, and recyclability properties need to be developed. Here, flexible and multifunctional polymer/porous boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) membranes with high water permeability, exhibiting high effectiveness and stability in the purification of simulated wastewater tainted with either oil/water emulsion or organic molecules, are reported. Remarkably, the flexible nature of these porous membranes enables simplicity of operation for water remediation processing and ease of post-processing collection. The composite membrane also displays a remarkably high permeability of 8 × 104 L μm m-2 h-1 bar-1, roughly three orders of magnitude higher than pure polymer, and excellent filter efficiencies for the pharmaceuticals ciprofloxacin, chlortetracycline, and carbamazepine (up to 14.2 L g-1 of BNNSs in the composite membrane for a concentration of 10 mg L-1 ciprofloxacin) and the dye methylene blue (up to 9.3 L g-1 of BNNSs in the composite membrane at a concentration of 30 mg L-1). Exhausted membranes can be readily rejuvenated by simple washing with retention of their high-performance characteristics. The results demonstrate the potential efficacy and practicality of these membranes for water cleaning.

Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) have been studied as a field emission material due to their unique and excellent properties such as high oxidation resistance and negative electron affinity. However, field emission properties of BNNT field emitters were rarely reported until now because it is difficult to synthesize high purity BNNTs and fabricate stable BNNT field emitters. Here, we report high field emission properties from BNNT field emitters fabricated on a tungsten rod.

Boron nitride nanotube reinforcement at titanium matrix composite increased the strength of the composite both at room and high temperature. At higher sintering temperature, nanotube reacts with titanium first forming TiB2 transition phase at the interface and then in-situ formed TiB phases in the matrix, which is also responsible for enhanced mechanical properties.

The difference in the chemical and physical properties of boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) films and carbon nanotube (CNT) films can benefit tissue scaffolding and engineering. However, the production of dense films of pure BNNTs is more challenging than that of CNT films. In addition, BNNT films are usually extremely nonwettable to water, so surface modification is required before they can be used in bioapplications. In this chapter, the synthesis routes of high-density BNNT films are introduced, followed by their wettability properties and surface modification by plasma treatments. The cell proliferation on both pristine and wettability-modified BNNT films is discussed.

Bulk hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a highly nonlinear natural hyperbolic material that attracts major attention in modern nanophotonics applications. However, studies of its optical properties in the visible part of the spectrum and quantum emitters hosted by bulk hBN have not been reported to date. In this work, we study the emission properties of hBN crystals in the red spectral range using sub-band-gap optical excitation. Quantum emission from defects is observed at room temperature and characterized in detail. Our results advance the use of hBN in quantum nanophotonics technologies and enhance our fundamental understanding of its optical properties.

Formation of defects in hexagonal boron nitride under low-energy argon bombardment has been studied by near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) around B and N K-edges. Breaking of B-N bonds and creation of nitrogen vacancies has been identified from the B K-edge, followed by the formation of molecular nitrogen, N2, at interstitial positions. The presence of N2 produces a sharp resonance in the low-resolution NEXAFS spectra around N K-edge, showing the characteristic vibrational fine structure in high-resolution measurements. Several new peaks in NEXAFS spectra have been assigned to boron or nitrogen interstitials, in good agreement with theoretical predictions. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
