An optimal search theory, the so-called Lévy-flight foraging hypothesis1, predicts that predators should adopt search strategies known as Lévy flights where prey is sparse and distributed unpredictably, but that Brownian movement is sufficiently efficient for locating abundant prey2, 3, 4. Empirical studies have generated controversy because the accuracy of statistical methods that have been used to identify Lévy behaviour has recently been questioned5, 6. Consequently, whether foragers exhibit Lévy flights in the wild remains unclear. Crucially, moreover, it has not been tested whether observed movement patterns across natural landscapes having different expected resource distributions conform to the theory’s central predictions. Here we use maximum-likelihood methods to test for Lévy patterns in relation to environmental gradients in the largest animal movement data set assembled for this purpose. Strong support was found for Lévy search patterns across 14 species of open-ocean predatory fish (sharks, tuna, billfish and ocean sunfish), with some individuals switching between Lévy and Brownian movement as they traversed different habitat types. We tested the spatial occurrence of these two principal patterns and found Lévy behaviour to be associated with less productive waters (sparser prey) and Brownian movements to be associated with productive shelf or convergence-front habitats (abundant prey). These results are consistent with the Lévy-flight foraging hypothesis1, 7, supporting the contention8, 9 that organism search strategies naturally evolved in such a way that they exploit optimal Lévy patterns.

Climate change can move the spatial location of resources critical for population viability, and a species' resilience to such changes will depend upon its ability to flexibly shift its activities away from no-longer-suitable sites to exploit new opportunities. Intuition suggests that vagile predators should be able to track spatial shifts in prey availability, but our data on water pythons (Liasis fuscus) in tropical Australia suggest a less encouraging scenario. These pythons undergo regular long-range (to >10 km) seasonal migrations to follow flooding-induced migrations by their prey (native dusky rats, Rattus colletti). However, when an extreme flooding event virtually eliminated rats for a three-year period, the local pythons did not disperse despite the presence of abundant rats only 8 km away; instead, many pythons starved to death. This inflexibility suggests that some vagile species that track seasonally migrating prey may do so by responding to habitat attributes that have consistently predicted prey availability over evolutionary time, rather than reacting to proximate cues that signal the presence of prey per se. A species' vulnerability to climate change will be increased by an inability to shift its activities away from historical sites toward newly favorable areas.

This chapter provides an overview of the rise of women and women leaders in the Australian news media and outlines aspects of newsroom culture that continue to hamper women's career progression. The chapter draws on a recent global survey and literature on the status of women in the news media. The most recent and wide ranging global data shows that while women's positions in the news media workforce (including reporting roles) has changed little in fifteen years, women have made small inroads into key editorial leadership positions. Nevertheless, the relative absence of women in these senior roles remains glaring, particularly in the print media, and points to a hegemonically masculine newsroom culture that works to undermine women's progress in the industry

In Chandani Lokugé’s Turtle Nest the Sri Lankan beach is a savage environment, a dystopia, where local children are molested by Western paedophile tourists. This essay examines representations of child vulnerability, exoticism, neocolonialism and envy in the novel. It reads these issues in the context of postcolonial tourism in Sri Lanka and elsewhere. It establishes connections between the commodification of children in Lokugé’s story and the real-world progress of exoticist tourism.

In this paper, we observe that the user preference styles tend to change regularly following certain patterns. Therefore, we propose a Preference Pattern model to capture the user preference styles and their temporal dynamics, and apply this model to improve the accuracy of the Top-N recommendation. Precisely, a preference pattern is defined as a set of user preference styles sorted in a time order. The basic idea is to model user preference styles and their temporal dynamics by constructing a representative subspace with an Expectation- Maximization (EM)-like algorithm, which works in an iterative fashion by refining the global and the personal preference styles simultaneously. Then, the degree which the recommendations match the active user's preference styles, can be estimated by measuring its reconstruction error from its projection on the representative subspace. The experiment results indicate that the proposed model is robust to the data sparsity problem, and can significantly outperform the state-of-the-art algorithms on the Top-N recommendation in terms of accuracy. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper introduces a new type of discriminative subgraph pattern called breaker emerging subgraph pattern by introducing three constraints and two new concepts: base and breaker. A breaker emerging sub-graph pattern consists of three subpatterns: a con-strained emerging subgraph pattern, a set of bases and a set of breakers. An efficient approach is pro-posed for the discovery of top-k breaker emerging sub-graph patterns from graph datasets. Experimental re-sults show that the approach is capable of efficiently discovering top-k breaker emerging subgraph patterns from given datasets, is more efficient than two previ-ous methods for mining discriminative subgraph pat-terns. The discovered top-k breaker emerging sub-graph patterns are more informative, more discrim-inative, more accurate and more compact than the minimal distinguishing subgraph patterns. The top-k breaker emerging patterns are more useful for sub-structure analysis, such as molecular fragment analy-sis. © 2009, Australian Computer Society, Inc.
