Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain is used to detect depression disorder. However, a large number of MRI scans needs to be analyzed for such detection. Manual segmentation of the biomarkers in MRI scans by clinical experts can become time consuming and sometimes erroneous. This paper presents a study on computer-aided detection of depression from MRI scans. These systems have not yet been identified, categorized and compared in the literature. The paper covers fully automated to semi-automated detection systems. It also presents performance comparison for the considered systems.

Understanding Science is about breakdown of meaning, breakdown of relationship, trying to exist in that space between meaninglessness and understanding, at its cusp, its node, its no-man's land.. It is a melting pot of more than just fragments of images, there are clusters of things, ideas, sounds, words, that swim in and out of your attention. I wanted this film to be a dense multidimensional collage of automatic writing, sound poetry and abstracting strings of images.

This performative, multi-media lecture re-reads Guy Debord’s book, The Society of the Spectacle (1967) with reference to the global Occupy movement, and the role social media and the Internet play in the facilitation and hindrance of this recent form of political activism. Debord claims that all ‘having’ — that is, all forms of accumulating capital — ‘derives its immediate prestige and its ultimate purpose from appearances’, and that individual reality, which is shaped by social forces, can ‘appear only if it is not actually real (Debord, thesis 18).’ Using the multiple functions and staggering proliferation of various image making technologies used to record and represent OCCUPY actions as a starting point, we respond to Debord’s proposition by examining the ways his analysis of the spectacle both enables and impedes a thorough critique of social media as a spectacular technology par excellence. Part reflective essay, part critical analysis, and part performance, ‘Click if You Like This’ connects various situationist strategies of ‘artistic interference’ — such as the dérive and détournement — with expanded cinema in order to generate a series of questions and provocations about the politics of place, the degradation of social space, networked images and the ubiquity of contemporary ‘spectacular’ technologies, which have colonized all forms of everyday life. This presentation questions whether contemporary forms and strategies of interference are the same as their historical precedents.

Growing self-organizing map (GSOM) has been characterized as a knowledge discovery visualization application which outshines the traditional self-organizing map (SOM) due to its dynamic structure in which nodes can grow based on the input data. GSOM is utilized as a visualization tool in this paper to cluster fMRI finger tapping and non- tapping data, demonstrating the visualization capability to distinguish between tapping or non-tapping. A unique feature of GSOM is a parameter called the spread factor whose functionality is to control the spread of the GSOM map. By setting different levels of spread factor, different granularities of region of interests within tapping or non-tapping images can be visualized and analyzed. Euclidean distance based similarity calculation is used to quantify the visualized difference between tapping and non tapping images. Once the differences are identified, the spread factor is used to generate a more detailed view of those regions to provide a better visualization of the brain regions.

The thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RFNL) has become a diagnose measure for glaucoma assessment. To measure this thickness, accurate segmentation of the RFNL in optical coherence tomography (OCT) images is essential. Identification of a suitable segmentation algorithm will facilitate the enhancement of the RNFL thickness measurement accuracy. This paper investigates the performance of six algorithms in the segmentation of RNFL in OCT images. The algorithms are: normalised cuts, region growing, k-means clustering, active contour, level sets segmentation: Piecewise Gaussian Method (PGM) and Kernelized Method (KM). The performance of the six algorithms are determined through a set of experiments on OCT retinal images. An experimental procedure is used to measure the performance of the tested algorithms. The measured segmentation precision-recall results of the six algorithms are compared and discussed.

Introduction : Depression is a major issue worldwide and is seen as a significant health problem. Stigma and patient denial, clinical experience, time limitations, and reliability of psychometrics are barriers to the clinical diagnoses of depression. Thus, the establishment of an automated system that could detect such abnormalities would assist medical experts in their decision-making process. This paper reviews existing methods for the automated detection of depression from brain structural magnetic resonance images (sMRI).Methods : Relevant sources were identified from various databases and online sites using a combination of keywords and terms including depression, major depressive disorder, detection, classification, and MRI databases. Reference lists of chosen articles were further reviewed for associated publications.Results : The paper introduces a generic structure for representing and describing the methods developed for the detection of depression from sMRI of the brain. It consists of a number of components including acquisition and preprocessing, feature extraction, feature selection, and classification.Conclusion : Automated sMRI-based detection methods have the potential to provide an objective measure of depression, hence improving the confidence level in the diagnosis and prognosis of depression.

Background Nurse‐patient communication in the hemodialysis context is unique given the amount of time spent together in a confined clinical room. Poor communication may lead to low-quality nursing care and undesirable patient outcomes.

Aim To explore the use of images as a visual communication technique for nurses and patients in the hemodialysis context.

Methods Descriptive qualitative design. Fifty-two cards containing specific photos, illustrations, and words were used to facilitate conversations about being on hemodialysis between patients (n = 9) and two nurse interviewers. Interview transcripts were thematically analysed.

Findings An overall theme titled ‘revealing the hidden struggles of living on dialysis’ conceptually captured three sub-themes: (1) the increased importance of relationships; (2) the struggle with money; and (3) quality over quantity of life. The cards assisted in uncovering these often covert (to nurses) aspects of dialysis patients' lives.

Conclusion Nurses may need to be aware of the dialysis patients' hidden struggles which include the importance of relationships, financial issues, and the importance of quality aspects such as travel. The use of images may assist in revealing the important issues for each patient struggling with the restrictive life that is imposed by dialysis.

Projected on two screens, with two separate soundtracks, the always exceptional, and occasionally brilliant, photographic images are enhanced by Dirk de Bruyn's rigorous control over a wide variety of experimental techniques.

Without overindulging in any of them, de Bruyn uses animation, optical illusions, time lapse, solarization, hand tinting, flash frames, refilming and flicker effects, accompanied by a dense atmosphere of word puns, dialogue, primal screams, music and even recycled and letraseted soundtracks.

In experimental film-artist Dirk De Bruyn’s work, these gestures of syntactical erasure can be understood as a poetic practice which seeks to grasp preverbal early childhood states – an (inevitably futile) attempt to excise meaning from experiences, before language and its attendant comprehension of the world. De Bruyn attributes this impulse to his early immigration from The Netherlands to Australia, and the confusion he experienced in the consequent liminal space between cultures, identities and languages. His tumultuous performances, which typically begin and end in darkness, combine urgent vocal utterances – hollering, screaming and chanting – with the sumptuous illumination of projected film. De Bruyn’s vocalisations meld with and amplify the images’ blooming fields of colour and intricately layered, hand-animated imagery. At Gertrude, Dirk will perform a new work for three 16mm projectors and voice entitled ‘i1234m’.

AIM:
To conduct a pilot study to explore the potential impact of visual feedback of personal retinal images on diabetes outcomes.

METHODS:
Twenty-five participants with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy and suboptimal HbA1c (> 53 mmol/mol; > 7%) were randomized to receive visual feedback of their own retinal images or to a control group. At baseline and 3-month follow-up, HbA1c, standard measures of beliefs, diabetes-related distress and self-care activities were assessed.

RESULTS:
In unadjusted models, relative to controls, the intervention group showed significantly greater improvement in HbA1c at 3-month follow-up (–0.6% vs. +0.3%, P < 0.01), as well as enhanced motivation to improve blood glucose management (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS:
This small pilot study provides preliminary evidence that visual feedback of personal retinal images may offer a practical educational strategy for clinicians in eye care services to improve diabetes outcomes in non-target compliant patients. A fully powered randomized controlled trial is required to confirm these findings and determine the optimal use of feedback to produce sustained effects.
